The Idahoan conducts an experiment to test the urban legend that baking a spray-painted part will harden the paint and make it as durable as a powder-coat finish.

In my experience a long, low process of curing spray paint at low temperatures (180 -220°F) for 4 to 6 hours does in fact provide a more durable coating. It's all dependent upon surface preparation. A uniform sanding layer to a 400 grit level, followed by a primer coat cured for 4 - 6 hours at the earlier temps. This step followed by 2 coats of color coat, each sprayed and cured separately in the same manner. This coating ends up being markedly more durable than an ordinary air cured rattlecan job. It's labor intensive, but it works. I've used it often for motorcycle parts, and they will withstand rock hits which would otherwise chip a standard paint coating.

How much does it safe compared to buying the powder if it's already labour intensive?

@@onpsxmember I just don't like the look of powder coat vs a good paint job with clear coat. If you find both finishes equally aesthetically pleasing, my way makes no sense.

@@DarkMatterX1 Usually I see powder coating with parts that'll see more abrasive wear or are positioned in a less visible place or to get a bit more texture for grip. I wouldn't use powdercoating for everything.

My results are similar, though I tend to ramp the temperature up after a few hours. I don't have a powder coating setup, so I'm not at all interested in any comparison. I consider oven-cured paint to be a technique to provide a fully-cured part without needing to wait a month for the finish to naturally achieve full chemical and abrasion resistance. ... but then again, most people don't even know that a finish takes more than a few hours to cure at room temperature.

Temperature and time matter a lot. Paint is a polymer so too much heat and time could damage it. I would do minimal temp on the oven for no more than 15 minutes, then allow for the item to fully cool off with sufficient time thereafter. An error I can spot in this "experiment" is that the main reason for baking the regular spray paint is the curing speed vs not baking it. So the benefit of baking is that you get very quick curing vs waiting for 30 days. So, you should have done a test where you spray paint the piece then wait 30 days. Then on the test day you spray paint the next piece and then bake it, then compare.

The baking technique is based on the type of spray paint used. For enamel paints, you get the best result if you bake it. For lacquer based paints, there is no need to bake.

I paint metal lures. Spray paint is not used because it just does not stand up. A couple casts in the rocks and spray paint chips off. Oven cured powder coat is my goto because it is so durable.

Oven curing is simply to cure the paint faster. That's why many car finishes are baked. It's mainly to speed the curing time.

For some paints, it does work, but finding the right ones could be expensive.I don't think that it would eb as durable as a powder coating though.

Your testing methodology is not adequate to get an unbiased test. You are in yourself creating a false test by providing pressure on your own. From your video you even say you provided more pressure. A truer test would be to test all 3 samples under the same test in a way to remove your physical bias. Eg put the samples in a rock tumbler for a set length of time each or similar test to remove your inconsistency from the test. However good effort.

I used to paint cars. After the fresh paint sits in the sun for a few weeks the paint is much tougher. I think it's a combination of UV, infrared, and just plain heat.... I don't think heat alone can compete with the sun...
@cowsongs
@cowsongs Жыл бұрын
The paint, even the enamels, used for painting cars is nothing like the spray enamel from a rattle can. I think most of your improvement came from the fact that the auto paint simply finished curing and hardening over a few weeks.
