I use rocksmith, the guitar hero with a real guitar game, to try and learn a song. Does it work??? Watch to find out!!!
This game is very similar (pretty much identical) to yousician, so if you're curious about that game this video is for you too! It's also a popular alternative to learning online for self taught guitar players.
OKAY ENJOY :)

I can say, RS does work, to an extent. My guitar teacher was an asshole who made me think I was trash, I found out about this game by chance, and picked it up after not touching a guitar for 7 years. It started out as a game for me, but I gradually got more confident and accurate. It made me feel like I was actually getting something done. Sure it isn't perfect, but it got me hooked on guitar in general again. I'm now in a band, I'd say I'm an above average guitarist, I play every single day and don't regret a thing. I'd never tell people I started on a game though, people tend to look down on it. I still play this game purely for fun now, but mainly custom songs from custom forge. Considering I went from being completely garbage, to an accomplished musician, I'd recommend it. Don't only play the game though, when you get used to playing the guitar, practice outside of it too, learn scales, theory and shit. Play with other musicians, I improved the most when I joined a band. ;D Rocksmith is a good tool for beginners, but you need to want to improve and put the hours in, or you won't get anywhere.

I just wanted to say, dont feel emberassed about learning guitar from a game dude, a videogame is just a method of learning, in fact to me, its on par with being self taught, lessons lead to bias in the skills you're taught where as rocksmith is based on intuition, you learn your own way of playing and honestly I'd be happy to tell people you learned from a game, its like "hey I learned from zero from this easy and purchasable product, that means anyone else can do it too." Theres an elitism problem with some musicians where the idea is, that being able to play an instrument is a skill that should be gate keeped, when its not, anyone can learn.

I have played rocksmith for over 2 years now. I can definitely say that it got some minor issues, like the note recognition for example. But over all, it's done a lot for me, practising is so much easier when you just feel like you are having fun playing a game. I wouln't recommend relying on rocksmith alone to make you a great guitarist, lessons and videos will perfect you more technique-wise. But with that said, i have learned so much from it and would recommend to anyone that wants to pick up the guitar. And also, the game doesn't work as well with an acoustic guitar as it does with an electric one (preferably with humbuckers as well) as i said before, the recognition is kind of wack sometimes. (fun vid btw, loved it haha)
@RedlightBlue

in my experience, the game's really fun as a game. but trying to use it as a learning tool can be a little bit frustrating, especially with the note recognition problems. Sometimes you don't know if you're messing up or if the game's just not registering it, specifically in lesson mode. Your comment summarizes it pretty well aha. I have an electric laying around so i might give it a go with that and see the difference. (Also, thank you!!)

I was given the first electric guitar I used for Rocksmith and the note recognition was rubbish so I spent £500 on a funky fender Mustang. It was just as crap. Only THEN did I learn how to set up the action and intonation properly. Now they both play much better! Here are my tips for Rocksmith: * Start with a short scale guitar (under 25"/625mm) like a Les Paul or Mustang style; it's only fractionally less to stretch but why make things any harder. * Medium strings work better than lights on Rocksmith. I know, folks'll say "but lights are easier to press and to bend" NO! on Rocksmith the extra mass of medium strings help the notes register with pickups better and their slightly greater resistance to bending helps the notes stay in tune as you fumble to grip unfamiliar chord shapes. With Rocksmith's unforgiving note detection, accurate intonation is everything! *Dr Neon do a set of gayley coloured strings that match the game. Very helpful for starting out. * Experiment with inverting the string order in the display. Oddly I find chords more intuitive one way (opposite to guitar tab) and soloing easier the other. We're all different so go with what feels right. * That irritating rewind animation can be disabled in the advanced settings, saving time and sanity. You can also toggle off Master Mode so it that won't hide the notes just as you're starting to master them. *Even with my guitar setup right, Rocksmith still struggles to register notes on the high strings above fret 12. I fixed this with a distortion pedal wound back to provide just a clean boost to the signal. * When Rocksmith misses notes/chords I KNOW I've hit, the tuner in the paused menu is way more accurate than the full screen tuner page so use that as primary tuner. * Rocksmith WON'T teach you finger style techniques like Travis picking; its "slow reveal" incremental difficulty method is actually really counterproductive! Instead I learn the fingerstyle tune/pattern on KZbin then come back to Rocksmith and start with difficulty at 100% and speed at minimum. This is how I've progressed with "Dust in the wind" and "Little black submarines" I'd say it's the only way. *Likewise I'll often up the difficulty% of each section immediately in riff repeater to a level I can handle. Otherwise it often offers weird alternative 'simple'' fingerings early on that later need to be unlearned! This is my experience - hopefully it'll help someone ease some of the infuriating frustrations that nearly had me quit the game. So glad I persisted. Rocksmith is my favourite aid in motivating me to pick up the guitar every day.

Reposting this in the main thread where I meant it to go! My tips for easing some of Rocksmith's quirks: * I got the first electric guitar I used for Rocksmith on Freecycle! Its note recognition was rubbish so I spent £500 on a funky fender Mustang ...and it proved equally crap! Only THEN did I learn how to set up the action and intonation properly. Now they both play so much better! A poorly setup guitar will miss lots of notes and make anyone HATE Rocksmith! * Consider a short scale guitar (under 25"/625mm) like a Les Paul or Mustang style; it's only fractionally less of a hand stretch but why make things any harder - But hey, if your guitar is 'normal' congrats! it's no disadvantage. Kids half our size learn to play them like a boss - (Check out audrey123talks (and her lil' sis on bass)) * Medium strings work better than light stings *on Rocksmith*. I know, folks'll say "but light strings are easier to fret and to bend" NO! on Rocksmith the extra mass of medium strings help the notes register with pickups better and their slightly greater resistance to bending helps the notes stay in tune as we fumble to grip unfamiliar chord shapes. With Rocksmith's unforgiving note detection, accurate intonation is everything! Mediums are still gentler than acoustic strings and your delicate little fingers are going to hurt at first anyway. * Dr Neon do a set of gayley coloured strings that match the game. VERY helpful when starting out. We can change to "proper" strings later. * Experiment (early on) with inverting the string order in the display. Oddly, while I now find chords more intuitive the default way (which is opposite to guitar tab), I find soloing easier the other way. We're all different so go with what feels right. (I re-inverted my string display six months in but it didn't take long to adapt) * That irritating rewind animation can be disabled in the advanced settings, saving time and sanity. You can also toggle off Master Mode so it that won't hide the notes just as you're starting to master them. * Even with my guitar setup right, Rocksmith still struggles to register notes on the high strings beyond fret 12. I fixed this with a distortion pedal - distortion wound all the way back and level raised just enough to provide a clean boost to the signal. * When Rocksmith misses notes/chords that I KNOW I've hit, it's usually because the string's slightly out of tune. The little tuner in the paused menu is way more accurate than the full screen tuner page so use that as primary tuner. I played it for a long time. I could play while watching. I could never turn away and play the song independent of the game. A few things to note. When you play a song from memory there are a few things at play none of them visual other than glancing at hand placement. It does involve muscle memory and your ear. Your eyes do too much work and take away from the other senses. The game may get you playing and thats good. Learning to play independant if the game in conjunction could be effective. Of course you can site read or play tabs, but for the average rocker you will commit everything to memory, brain and muscle. You also need to take breaks as your brain will write stuff into your long term memory while you rest and sleep.

You may find that just taking a break and coming back helps you with it. I've never played Rocksmith mainly because I just can't buy a copy right now so I can't vouch for the game, though I kinda got the feeling that it wouldn't be great for me personally even though I can see how it can be very useful. However with practice in general, I'll usually find that if I've been practicing for a long time to nail one song or something I find hard, I usually do much better after I've gone to sleep and woken up the next morning, especially if playing that song was the last thing I did before going to sleep. Kinda like my brain is mulling it over and processing it while I sleep and trying to figure it out, so the next day all I'm doing is just finding a way to make sure my hands physically know how to play it.

It's much easier to score 100% on songs you love: I like Dylan but Knocking on Heaven's Door, melodically, is wearisomely repetitive, I can't handle more than 10 minutes of it! It's definitely worth rewarding/indulging yourself with favourites from among the 1000+ DLC tracks available. I keep an extensive wishlist prepared for Steam's Sale season. It comes around about twice a year with most songs from previous years selling at 40% - Importing the original Rocksmith playlist was good value, even though I only wanted a few of the tracks. As for songs I've got to 100%, the Bob Marley songs are ridiculously easy! I also have a playlist dedicated to Blues numbers many of which are very straightforward; Muddy Waters' "I'm a Man" is tricky solely on account of accuracy of repetition! Rocksmith's sort "By Difficulty" and "Recommended" in searches are both good for finding the easier songs to learn first.

That doesn't mean Rocksmith is useless though. Up till now I've been mainly practicing basic open chords and this for example isn't something that Rocksmith teaches explicitly. Once you know the chords, I've found that Rocksmith is pretty good for practicing changing chords in rhythm mode if you can find songs that contains the chords you want to practice. Just need to increase the difficulty to 50+ otherwise you get some strange notes, alternate chords or power chords.

It does work. If you're someone who can already play the guitar, starting at a raised level is sometimes better - when you can follow the screen. As I find that it saves time, and sometimes the mind finds it hard to follow the simpler pattern if it's already processing the extra notes not shown in lower level.

Rocksmith worked just fine for me, although I don't really use it as a song learning tool so much as an equipment emulator now. Occasionally I'll go into the Rocksmith library and use the software to practice a song I'd like to learn, but not often. I learned pretty early on that Rocksmith is great for learning the basics, but I could see myself reaching a point where I would be unable to play any songs without the aid of the game unless I switched it up and practiced independently for a bit. It's a great tool, possibly the best to come along in a while, but it can become a crutch if overused.

I've been using Rocksmith for about 2-3 months and am astounded at my progress. Not that I claim to be even a good guitarist, or even a mediocre one. But what it has tought me is to program brain to connect to the guitar through 2 hands while having fun playing songs I like, and working through the lessons. I don't think I would have made 10% of the progress I have by watching dry youtube videos about chords and strumming.

I had already played guitar for about a year or so, give or take, before i picked up Rocksmith. I had seen TheDooo's video on it, and it looked really fun, plus a lot of sings to play on top of it so i had something more to play other than like 5 chords and Seven Nation Army. My experience has been great. Yes, the note detection may be a bit off, but i look at it more as an interactive tab-collection with gamey elements than a practicing tool (though it did teach me how to palm mute, making power chords sound freaking amazing when played right). I have never gone to any guitar playing courses where a teacher teaches you how to play, as i started out with Youscician (also a great way to start playing guitar, i find), so the mere fact that i can play a Volbeat song (while not hard, it does sound amazing) without having to look at the screen is amazing. Just... Always play with the Realtone cable. Never play with the microphone for optimal performance.

I started playing RS2014 less than a year ago and I improved a lot thanks to it. I can assure you if you put in the time you will see the difference, I almost haven't missed a day without playing and been playing twice daily on average for like 2-3h daily. Its easy to pickup and you will start to improve, look at audrey123talks what she achieved because of Rocksmith. It works, although 60 days to play guitar is kinda BS. You can play a few songs maybe but playing the guitar at a decent level takes years, thats just bullshit advertisement imo. Rocksmith has also flaws, people tend to get too fixed on the interface instead of their own playing. Also there is no feedback on technique and lessons should always be a valuable option. Also note detection shouldn't be an issue if you properly set everything up. It also has a wide arrangement of songs and many to download. Thanks to Rocksmith I also got more open-minded and started to appreciate more songs. Its a great game and definitely shouldn't be overlooked. Its a great learning tool.

I can get to hardest difficulty within a few playthroughs with site-reading set at 9. avg accuracy for all songs is around 85%ish. my fingers move anywhere i want on the fret and any string(correctly). Arpegios and tremelos are no problemo(radiohead-Creep sounding amazing at this point). I would say this game works. after i complete a playthrough of songs in learn a song mode, i can continue jamming out to the song from instinct. The only thing i would really like changed about this game is knowing when to strum up or down.

I don't really recommend the game for like the be all end all guide to play the guitar. What it does, it does really well. Like helping you get into instruments. Admittedly I've been playing for about a year and I can't tell you what the hell any of the scales or chords are, but that's on me. I don't really research or learn. I play it because 1. I like rhythm games (TAP TAP REVENGE PLS COME BACK I LOVE YOU BB), and 2. it's really fun. I really like the game.

GloriousButt What everyone needs to do is listen to themselves play without the game. You may think you aced it if you get a great score, but what if you isolate your playing and it’s terrible? That’s where practicing alone with a metronome or with the song helps a ton. Recording yourself play and then watching it is also a great way to spot sections where you have trouble and where you need to work on more.

Man, start playing somthing simple first! Open chords and arpeggios IMO are hard to play for beginners. Try to learn the simple power chord shape and play some Ramones (I speak from my experience). They are easy to play and you have some fun while playing them and it encourage you to pick up the guitar next day and try something harder. Power chords are the first step to the barre chords which open you lots of gates and you can play even more songs. I bought Rocksmith to help me learn guitar and now I can play many songs. Although I can't play very technical stuff(tapping, sweep, fast solos) but I dont practice them anyways. I just play guitar to have some fun. I am able to make my own songs now. Rocksmith doesn't teach you how to play guitar just by playing some songs, you have to take your time and practice techniques what you can't play. But anyways it's good tool to help you practice and have a good time while doing it. It was a good deal to purchuse Rocksmith.

Then your F and B and your power chords which are the same shape all over the place.

Yeah I was blown away and still am with how great Rocksmith is. I played it when it came out but didn't care for the lag and all that..BUT.. girlfriend just got the cord for it recently and I thought I would give it a try since it had been a long time and it's an amazing tool for anyone I think, the way you can learn modes, scales, chords all that stuff, is brilliantly integrated into it. So now I am back to being addicted to practicing, which is awesome! I've never not love playing but when you have something that challenges you to sight-read, not in the classical stands but most people know what I mean. So there is not much I can complain about other than the tiny bit of lag, which is not hard to overcome if you've been playing for a while and if you're new, you can play things so slow that it doesn't really matter. I just did not remember it being that great of a game and learning tool! I wish I had it years earlier, that way literally every mode, major/minor pentatonic scales, etc. etc. would be truly be burned into my head. Anyone with a PS4 or PS5 or whatever absolutely need this game they play music, it's a phenomenal tool and if you have the patience to go through even the basic tutorial again, then it's like starting over but not. Most people don't say, oh no I've been playing for 10 or 20 years and I love finding the time to play and (legit) PRACTICE for 5 to 10 hours a day! LOL So if you can get hooked on a video game this teaching you stuff, that's a beautiful thing 😊

I've been playing Rocksmith for about two months now. Never heard of it until just recently, been playing bass for about 6 years and normally use regular tabs or the ultimate guitar app to learn songs, rock Smith is I'd have to say the best way to learn songs by other artists. Seeing as it allows you to slow parts down. Put them on loop ect. I'll even just turn Rocksmith on just to use it's tuner then just play off the amp, or I'll play with the setting to where your not plugged into Rocksmith and it doesn't rate how you do just so I can play plugged into my own amp, I've spent about 300$ on songs so far and will probably just buy them all eventually, I've been buying 3 song packs a week for about the last 8 weeks, so far I have Jimmy Hendrix pack, 16 songs Fly leaf packs 4 songs Rage against the machine packs 12+ Incubus 6+ I'm happy to pay for correct tabs, especially interactive tabs when there only 3$
