This is part of the reason why MS is putting work into an OS-level upscaler on the ARM side. They'll build their own into DX, with an eye to ensuring other providers can integrate theirs into it.

Yes but they're not going to allow their competition to have access to the newest or the best.. So if XB stick with AMD PlayStation will always have an advantage as they know the tech being made and can them make better tweak for their system...

@@Ben.B.Benjamin that's not really how the technology works. AMD aren't in a position to offer wildly different hardware to Sony and MS; and Sony, MS and the other publishers can no longer afford to fund games that lose money on single-platform exclusives that underperform. Costs need to reduce, which means target hardware must be 'similar' across the board, with similar end capabilities, or the game doesn't make its money back.

@andraszoltan2 Sony are a hardware company... Look at the PS3 and the PS5pro, the PSVR. The Portal. The duel sense. They do and take risks on many different hardware devices. Because they are a hardware company FIRST. the tech that they will develop with AMD will be on offer to XBOX, But not all of it and not the best versions. The same way PS could have used AMDs upscaling tech but they choose to make their own and even Guerrila Games don't use PSSR they use their own upscaling tech. XB will always be behind PS in tech from now, unless they make their own.

Bit of an odd question tbh. There have been multiple generations where Apple contracted Samsung along side TSMC to make their proprietary design ARM SoC’s used in the iPhone. Collaborations with manufacturers is very common across all industries and IP laws prevent manufacturers from sharing technologies with competing businesses. Microsoft can just as easily if not more easily design proprietary hardware for their next gen console made by AMD that uses their own proprietary software (upscaling tech in this case).

@@Ben.B.Benjamin No, Sony developed the PS1 and PS2 chipsets in-house. And for the PS3 they realised how fast and complex hardware had become, especially looking at the original Xbox and it's capabilities (Doom3). That's why Sony made the wise decision to design the PS3 chipset on an existing architecture. Now, x86 was not possible as it was tightly controlled by Intel/AMD. And at the time (2002) RISC-based (eg ARM/MIPS) systems were too primitive. That's why they went with IBM, and it seemed like the best choice. IBM had a good architecture, it was very behind the market (hence why Apple's departure). But this presented the opportunity for Sony to bring their talent in, and help design the next-gen processor. Sony probably thought this technology might end up in Arcades and Slot Machines, as Nintendo likely would not dare cross them in their native Japan. They also knew that Microsoft is their biggest threat, and that they are going with x86 system. So they thought alright, let's develop an advanced system and match this tough x86 competitor, who had more expensive x86 license fees. What happened next was that Intel and Nvidia both raised their prices, potentially making the Xbox 360 cost a thousand bucks. Whilst AMD was okay, they were going through bankruptcy due to illegal activity from the "Wintel" and OEM partnership. They actually had no options. They turned to IBM, and wouldn't you know it that IBM just introduced them to their next-gen architecture, most of which was based on Sony's design. Meanwhile, Sony was doing great with the sales and games from the ageing PS2. They were at work further developing their Custom IBM chipset, when out of nowhere the Xbox 360 was announced, and it was panic mode. The further development of Cell was halted, and the PS3 was fast-tracked and pushed out the door. And by some miracle, it was very similar to the Xbox 360, and only a tad faster. The advantage MS had was that they had a cheaper console, a year headstart on the market, and better software tools for developers. So most third-party games actually ran or looked better. It took way too long for the PS3 system to mature. And Sony had to learn some important lessons. Come time for PS4, they decided to go Stock for easier development, made sure to include more storage and more memory. And made up for the slow single-core performance by having 8x cores, and they promoted concurrent software, especially with their early adoption of Vulkan. It was here that Microsoft stuffed up with their XB1 console, despite having more features (HDMI-in, Kinect), better interface, and better games upon release. Their idi otic corporate decision to have 24h monitoring, convoluted licensing system, higher cost, and lower performance, it basically destroyed the public enthusiasm. They even copied Sony with the mid-gen refresh. For the PS5/XSX, the decision was simple to go with AMD. We also had lower binned options for the XSS and SteamDeck. I believe the decision for the PS6 and XB6 will be similar. They will both go with AMD and it won't be too custom. I believe this next round, Microsoft might go more humble, and Sony could go with heavier specs. But overall we don't have too much high hopes.

That’s quite interesting. Microsoft has two options. 1) Stick with NVIDIA, which offers the best GPU solutions and technology, including DLSS and frame-generation. 2) Release an ARM architecture console and go in that direction. However, I don’t see how they can truly utilize cutting-edge GPU technologies. It seems like they lack an equivalent to DLSS, FSR, or PSSR. Regardless, I believe next-generation gaming should definitely have 60fps and ray-tracing capabilities. NVIDIA frame-generation could be a game-changer. So, Project Amethyst could compel Microsoft to collaborate with NVIDIA even if they incur losses in the process, but they could eventually take the lead.

X86 to ARM emulation is pretty good these days. Emulating GPUs seems less easy. Intel GPU also seems unlikely, because they are very die inefficient. I think AMD is probably the most likely option, but ARM+Nvidia seems certainly possible. Backwards compatibility doesn't look like an insurmountable challenge. As far as I can find, there have been no Series S/X exclusives. They all had PC releases. So Microsoft could probably run the PC version on next gen consoles with automatically applied settings, like what Geforce Experience does. ARM would be a challenge, but I'm pretty sure a next gen ARM cores could match the aging Zen 2 Cores even under emulation. For the 360 games, emulation is probably viable. That leaves the few games from the Xbox One era that didn't get PC releases. They can probably hack together an emulator or stream them from the cloud. Sure having to use the often more buggy/stuttery PC releases, not to speak of Cloud streaming, will enrage your hardcore Xbox fan, but I could totally see Microsoft doing it anyways.

Microsoft jumped from Nvidia to ATi (now AMD) when they went from the "OG" XBox to the XBox 360, without too much of an issue with backwards compatability. So, I can't really see there being much of an issue GPU wise, if they reversed that and went back to using a Nvidia GPU. It's still using the same X86-64 instruction set and architecture after all. Plus, compatabily software has vastly improved since back then. The very same goes with them jumping over to using Intel instead. However, jumping over to a ARM CPU might throw up a few issues here and there. Although a decently implemented translation layer should iron out most of the issues. Plus, Microsoft have already done a very simular thing already with Windows for ARM. I've gotta say though, if they did jump back to using Nvidia GPU's, then it would definatly hand to them a leading and invoative edge in gaming tech that they simply wouldn't get by sticking it out with AMD. Plus, it would also knock Sony firmly onto it's backfoot. Jumping over to Intel on the otherhand, then probably not so much so. Although, I've got to say that Intel's future Celestial and Druid GPU's do look pretty impressive (at least on paper).

What's Microsoft going to do? The Activision deal is the very reason Microsoft had to become a third party. Phil Spencer wanted to buy Activision and make COD exclusive to Xbox (like he made Bethesda games exclusive to Xbox after that purchase). Then the FTC and CMA got involved and claimed "monopoly", and suddenly, Phil is complaining that Microsoft can't compete, Microsoft is so weak, blah blah blah. And what happened? Microsoft immediately began offering 10-year deals for COD on every platform, including Nintendo platforms that haven't had a COD game since 2013. Then the Activision deal is approved, and suddenly, Microsoft is not only putting Activision games on every platform, but they're now moving to put all Microsoft first-party games, including Halo, on all platforms. Not to mention, it seems like Microsoft agreed not to market COD on Xbox, because Microsoft owns COD yet didn't bundle COD with the Xbox Series X/S during the holidays. In fact, they didn't bundle any game with the console. It's as if Microsoft had to stop marketing their hardware. And suddenly, it's all about software, and, "Everything is an Xbox". Seriously, Microsoft is laughably bad right now. They embarrassed themselves when they begged for the privilege of paying $68 billion for Activision just to put all Activision games on more consoles than they were on before Microsoft bought them. That deal seriously backfired on them. And now, their investors want that money back as quick as possible. Oh, and how about Xbox fans complaining about Sony money-hatting games? Where's Microsoft and their "more money than god"? Why isn't Microsoft money-hatting games? Why are Xbox fans crying about Black Myth: Wukong? Sony didn't even pay for that one, but the fans think they did because someone from Microsoft accused Sony of money-hatting. Is that "fighting Sony with kids gloves"? Look, AMD can do what they want, and Microsoft won't do anything. Sony can do what they want, and Microsoft won't do anything. And hey, remember when Microsoft made an offer to buy Nintendo, and Nintendo laughed them out of the room?🤣

I'm more surprised that the Nintendo relationship seems to have worked more than anything. The other big thing is x86. Both Sony and MS wanted a more PC-like arch which is why they moved to x86 and you can't really use x86 unless you buy from Intel or AMD. And MS has had a terrible experience with Intel too. Mixing and matching used to be something you did in the Xbox 360 days but nowadays everyone wants SoCs so AMD kinda is the only game in town at the moment unless you want to go ARM.

Consoles need to go back to custom architecture. I am sick of these boring boxes. Bring back powerPC, cell CPU etc. This is why consoles are always out of date out of the box. @GalaxyFur
@GalaxyFur 19 күн бұрын
@@GameslordXY Older tech literally means weaker. The PS6, coming online in 2028, aims for faster tech and more advanced AI. Sony would not nor has ever released a system with nearly identical performance to something that has existed on the market for two years. That would be absolutely dumb. Of course, it would be more powerful-that's a given. That's how consoles have always worked.
@GalaxyFur
@GalaxyFur 19 күн бұрын
@@De1usionsofGrandeur The whole point of a console is not to have a modular design. That would be called a PC. If anything, the console industry learned that the modular concept does not work. As did the cell phone industry. Modular tech has been tried before in two tech industries, both of which had negative consequences. It just creates consumer confusion, disparities in the ecosystem, and raised costs. The N64 Expansion pack and the 64 DD showed Nintendo it wasn't worth going down. It's easier and cheaper to release a new system when it is the right time.

Sony collaborating with AMD is nothing new, this time is more of an official way of announcing it. Most of RDNA Ray tracing improvements can be trace to some help from Sony, so even Microsoft is benefiting from that partnership. This will probably mean that the most cutting edge technology will go to PlayStation first, like it was already, while Xbox is going to get more current gen hardware.

I like Oliver's take that they may not be directly competing. I would not mind if MS released a handheld, like Steam Deck (but without parity clause!), and a premium console, going for like $800-$900, but offering much better performance than PS6 - more VRAM, better ray-tracing, more consistent performance. I would like that approach better than the Series X & S combo, for sure.

I think xbox should focus more on building a specific software on windows to make gaming more comfortable, since i really dont see them in the next generarion making consoles anymore, they destroyed the opportunity with the "this is a xbox" campaign, but they will join the market of portable consoles, if that happens they probably will go for something that is actually profitable while being also powerful enough to run series s or plus games .
