From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Great video, as ever, but it seems to me that battle wasn’t about stealth, so much as your opponent’s hypersonic missiles totally out-matching your AIM-120s.
@Danlovestrivium
@Danlovestrivium Жыл бұрын
If the F-15 would have been stealth, the Felon would have been within the AIM-120's range with a much higher probability of kill for the F-15. So while this exercise demonstrates the effectiveness of the hypersonic missile's range, if the F-15 had been able to avoid detection until the Felon was much closer, it would have nullified the standoff capabilities of the hypersonic missile. The F-15 sitting out there the size of a blimp allowed the Felon to take full advantage of it's long range missiles. This was very much about stealth.

@Gargoloso internal reflectors are not the same as s-duct shaped inlets. RCS is based on reflectivity, so those reflectors basically reduce it but not completely. The issue is also not the rivets, it's the gaps in the panels of the whole plane. SU57s are made by hand, meaning the gap quality and panel quality aren't close to being consistent. Real stealth requires almost literally having no gap between all panels of the whole plane. Read up on stealth and RCS so you have an understanding of these things.

The F22/35 use special tools (the tool even has a special patient and is top secret), so the tolerances (panel gaps, etc.) are super tight, which can't be done by hand. Read up on it.

I think stealth is one of those things where it has to be at a certain level in order to mean much of anything. That's why they stopped trying to produce a reduced-RCS version of the F-15. At the end of the day, if the enemy has 50nm range missiles, it doesn't really matter that much if they can see you from 60nm or across the continent. They're going to know you're coming. That said, I can see a "medium stealth" capability being somewhat useful against aircraft with already-marginal radar, like the F-16. If you could take 10nm off the Viper's BVR detection range, that actually means something, so long as his buddy in the Eagle hasn't already splashed you.

That's the special idea being the SPECTRA on the rafale, not even trying to be fully stealthy but artificially send opposite waves to what it detects to make itself hard to lock long enough, so it is not afraid of going out with bombs and missiles and tanks at the same time, while doing eletronic warfare to jam/spook the ennemy's radar enough to be hard to lock at least at medium and long distance. It's proven totally effective against S200 in real situation (overflew them in syria in the first days and delivered all ordinance on high value targets without being shot despite flying in their range) which is a reason why it finally started selling, it's unclear if it's enough to fly over S300 or even S400 with (relative) safety but it's the idea, because the Rafale comes now with long range missiles (meteor) a good radar (AESA) and also can carry cruise missiles (i believe its main one has 550km, the SCALP/storm shadow). It doesn't expect to be stealthy like an F22, but stealthy enough even fully loaded to be close enough to deliver its ordinance and be in relative if not complete safety (depending on the opponent). Super effective in recent battlefield for a low operational cost which is why it's selling at the moment. It's basically guaranteed to beat eastern planes, the main unknown at least to us general public is how it deals if flying over S300 or S400 (it can shoot any S300/S400 even jamming ones because there are triangulation systems to confirm GPS location of a launcher/detect it and drop a guided bomb to it but the fact it can or can't overly a S300 is unknown officially). We'll see when the F35 really delivers its promises, and the scarf program FCAS/SCAF plane planned to be the successor.

the Su31 is literally the reason why the ukrainian F16s are destined to only fly low and bomb. They would instantly shoot them from afar if they didn't. It doesn't need to be modern: be protected by S300, have awacs help it shoot with long range missiles, them and the S300 make a potential ukranian F16 unable to fly at normal altitudes it would just get shot at until a kill (and we all know they will have only a dozen or two of them). That's the reason why the estimated time to train ukrainian pilots has been shortened by cutting advanced air to air training and complex systems training because it's estimated there is literally no chance they can use the F16 any other way than low and with guerilla tactic because of what you just said. The 2 guys who did test flights in the sim with the us specialists were guinea pig to establish what they need to learn, and what is useless to train, and more than half the items are being ommitted on purpose to accelerate the training and also because it would just be useless.

with the extreme range and speed of those missiles it doesnt seem to really be that worthwhile to dive to the deck it just seems like your reducing what vectors are available to you to notch the radar. also I wonder if a high altitude cobra maneuver might be a viable tactic against pulsed doppler radar reducing your speed rapidly till you drop below the doppler filter while being able to quickly drop your nose back onto the enemy while they push

I wonder if pulling up would have defeated that hyper-sonic. The SR-71 needs the area of Montana or Texas to make a 90deg turn and it's going "just" Mach 3.3 or 2,200 mph. You made an interesting scenario here and it creates the question about how to a) defeat a Felon and b) how to defeat a Felon with hyper-sonic missiles.

It seems like, in a 1v1, notching is a pretty straightforward way to defeat a Fox-3, with the caveat that some missiles (like the AMRAAM) are harder to notch than others (e.g., Phoenix). I would be interested to see a 2v1 BVR fight where the 2 fighters on one side use geometry to counter notching by the 1 fighter on the other side. The 2 fighters should be able to position themselves to each fire a Fox-3, where the 1 opposing fighter cannot notch both incoming missiles at the same time. Of course, the 2 fighters have the advantage in a 2v1. One the anti-notching geometry is demonstrated in a 2v1, I'd be interested to see a 2v2, where both sides are using anti-notching geometry on each other.

The answer appears to be, "Yes, but not nearly as much as the range of you _asthmatic_ intercept missile!" So far, this outlook appears to be the way to go, because what does it matter when the maximum effective range of _your_ missiles is inside the minimum abort range of _theirs?_ In both engagements, GS started needing to dodge missiles at about twice the range his AMRAAMs could even fly, never mind be dangerous in. The adversary here could have had no stealth at all and it would not have changed the outcome of either fight. Without the AIM-260, the United States does not have air superiority, because we just don't have enough Raptors or Amys.

Great video, but I just want to address the stealth dilemma and to dispel some misconceptions! There is "internet mantra" that Su-57 is having the RCS in the range of the clean Super Hornet which is based on the Russian patent numbers, but the Su-57 patent is not stating that the plane has an RCS roughly equal to that of the Super Hornet because Russians are using an average RCS values, not the smallest RCS value from the most favorable angle like US is doing for the PR purposes. Only people who are clueless on the subject are going to buy into this nonsense! Shaping is the most important part of the stealth, and since the F-18SH is based on more than 40 years old platform it doesn’t have a single edge alignment, unlike the Su-57 that is applying exactly the same shaping rules as F-22 and F-35. Also, unlike the Su-57, F-18 doesn’t have platform alignment. Super Hornet is simply 4th generation fighter with RCS reduction measures, nothing more nothing less. In design of the Su-57 technique of continuous curves is applied. This means that the Su-57 has a constantly curving body that changes its radius of curvature at multiple points. This allows radio waves to scatter in every direction so that no waves are passed straight back to the receiver. Even if we assume that both planes have the same amount of composite materials in its structure and surface (which is not the case, Su-57 is also superior in this regard), it is physically impossible for two planes to have the same RCS, far from it! And if we take in to consideration that Su-57 has far more extensive application of the RAM, the case is closed, 0% chance!
