It's a weird situation since the Dynamic tracks makes them much better experienced in actual gameplay than listening by themselves. I'll admit by themselves some can feel pretty lacking but I think they compliment the gameplay very well and the idea of each round having it's own version of the track is cool. I do wish the "low health" variant would only kick in in rounds 2 or 3 though it does get a little tiring hearing the same section across each round as one players health gets low.

My thoughts exactly, on the other side of the coin we have GG Strive where some of the character themes can’t be experienced fully in game and better experienced by themselves. Both ways are perfectly fine, and it depends on your own preference. My personal take with Ryu is that hes been the guy who travels around the world fighting to get stronger, so I don't see him tied to the 100% Japanese theme for his character. He has that bit of the wanderer gene that really has no real home. So I feel that the music reflects his Japan roots, but also reflects his current circumstance of him being in the city, and also his excitement at fighting and his wisdom in being such a master by this point. So to me it fits 100% But I feel that what lacks here is the oomph that usually fighting games have. This is why for example Jamie sounds great, while the blanka one, or the Juri one, or Guile etc. lacks that potency in their tracks. Its still great music, but I wouldn't say its fighting music. Sometimes its just noise lol. Also I don't know why but the Juri song reminds me of ring fit.

a "bad" game soundtrack isn't defined by its genre, rather how it's presented, how much thought was put into the composition.. when it plays and what it symbolizes. an actual "bad" game ost would be harsh on the ears, like the stuff that actively makes you wince when you hear it. sf6's music is not that lmao

Probably the best thing about the new music that isn't gonna hit people right away is how consistently the tracks get out of the way. When it's in the background of the fights it's not overwhelming or overshadowing the game sounds or even the commentary features. When it's playing in the background and someone is streaming it doesn't clash with their voices. Then you put the tracks on in headphones and while it's not stand out iconic on every song, it's a serviceable song on its own. It's a part of a whole and it feels very considerate for that function.

I can respect that, but that grinding staccato and almost dub step "woom woom" aftereffect, doesn't cut it for me. I'm more than confident you'll find far more music theory experts that will find all the things that a great composition needs in these tracks to be there, than the ignorant fuckheads who know very little on the subject that will more than likely have nothing more substantial than ignorant gut reactions to serve as any contrary. But of course, everyone who DOESN'T know shit will inevitably have their opinions valued just as equally as those that DO know their musical ass from a hole in the ground, because that's how this coddled fucking society just works these days, according to every dipshit too afraid to be based or bold enough to tell people the shit they need to hear for once in their lives. The music in SF6 is a lot more laid back and chill compared to previous entries, which I think fits the tone this game is going for. So far there doesn't seem to be some kind of overarching world ending/domination plot, you're just a guy learning fighting techniques from masters, and getting to know more about their personal lives and maybe struggles, and the music fits that style. And while I'm personaly not a fan of most compositions, I don't think they're bad tracks, just not my style. I do really like DeeJay's theme though.
@monsterofvoices Жыл бұрын
I think it's good to see people who say that it's just not their style. A lot of the people who say they "don't like the music" are likely just not fans of the genres that are in the music or are used to fighting games that just throw the melody and bridge at you super fast.

Ryu’s overcome the Satsui no Hado, he’s defeated his darkness, so he can live in the moment, while Ken, who’s been the carefree counterpart to Ryu for years, is weathered, and his battle is only beginning. And on cultural music, the main instrument in Ryu’s theme aside the saxophone is the shamisen, a classical japanese instrument. All in all, it gives me the vibe of a modern day wandering samurai living for the first time.

I think the problem with a lot of the tracks is that they lack a solid hook or melody. If you go back to SF2 or Alpha and listen to the tracks, they have strong hooks that have you humming the song even when you're not playing the game. That's what's missing from a lot of these tracks.
@kei7540 Жыл бұрын

I think the biggest shift in the compositions this time round is that they sound less melody dominated. When you think of classic SF themes, you usually think of the themes' memorable melodies more than anything else. Guile, Ryu, Ken, etc. even the 3S example has a melody you can remember, on top of that iconic opening. These SF6 themes almost feel composed to specifically be "background" music, because of the amount of repetition and lack of melody or anything in the forefront. Ryu's and Jamie's themes have memorable melodic parts, but even they are short phrases, and quite repetitive still. Even thinking of the classic themes, a lot of them follow a structure of Intro-A(Verse)-B(Bridge)-C(Chorus)-Repeat, with each section having it's own unique identity, either through instrumentation, texture, rhythm, etc. A lot of the sections in these SF6 themes tend to just blend together without any huge changes, which is why they feel like they don't go anywhere. A part of me wonders if this shift to "background" themes has something to do with the sound accessibility options they showed in the last trailer. Make the music less distracting with less powerful melodies, drops, or tonal shifts, to allow the sound accessibility to be as distinguishable as possible. I mean, maybe not, but it's worth thinking about at least.

I think one thing that's not brought up nearly enough is how SF6 music is Adaptive, and this has a massive impact as to why the music sound a certain way. This is why some might think that it's too tame for a fighting game music, because every song has a quieter sound for Round transitions. It's also why most of these have beat drops so the music flows better instead of just cutting to the next part of that music, the advantage of this is that it sets up the right music depending on the stakes, AKA the Round 1 part are naturally much calmer but that also inherently makes Round 3 and Low Health parts more intense and feel like the round/game is actually about to end, something completely unachievable if it's just regular music which serves more or less as just a background music. This is also the reason why I dislike Dhalsim, Lily and especially Dee Jay's theme, because their music is done in such a way that they might as well not be adaptive music at all since the difference between each parts are barely any different from one another. This is made obvious during 10:38 (Jamie) and 35:09 (JP) and especially JP, listening to them as if they're a non-adaptive music really REALLY doesn't do them justice when they're not at all meant to be listened that way.

Jun's theme sounds like spiders in your wardrobe having a dance party. JP literally puts you in Castlevania with him as Lord Dracula. They did a great job conveying that he's a dancer first and a fighter second, he's fighting to have a good time and to feel the rhythm more than anything else. Even his more mixup heavy moveset feels so much more playful, like it's begging you to just experiment and adjust to the flow of the match. As someone who has never been super competitive but still loves to play these games I can really vibe with his overall personality

I get that people dislike Guile's theme especially in comparison to his original theme, but that theme doesn't represent who Guile is anymore. The old theme was intense, representing a hardened, single-minded soldier on a quest for vengeance. This new theme is even-toned, calmer, and uses a lot of instruments prevalent in the 80s. Guile has become a level-headed family man, with a theme to match.

I’m so happy they took a chance with the music. They went for it and went hard and they’re doing something different that that’s awesome. So happy not to immediately hear recycled and remixed classics. Sure, give me that down the line. But everything in SF6 feels fresh as hell and that rules. I DO think the mix is a little too carved out on all the tracks. All the tracks are missing some mid range warmth. I think this is intentional. I think they are mixing for clarity so that things like the commentary and SFX remain legible. I get it. But I would’ve mixed it differently.

I think the strongest track Ryu ever had was just in Marvel vs Capcom 1. It was optimistic, energized, it felt like the intro to a Saturday morning cartoon. Granted, that's exactly the beats of the actual tv show, but that in turn just lifted the intro to SF2. I think this new track suits him. He's won against the Dark Hadou. He doesn't have to be in Try-Hard mode anymore cause he's got the same easy swagger of a cancer survivor. His journey is no longer about getting strong, cause he's already there. Maybe he and Ken can gatekeep Luke and all the other new kids.

I think the thematic reason why Ryu's theme feels out of place for him is because he's a wanderer. He doesn't really have a home for himself, and he more or less goes around wandering the world, fighting people, and working on bettering himself every single day. It just so happens that part of his journey lands him in this urban setting, which is why his theme sounds more funky and urban than his usual themes.
@04DarKnight04 Жыл бұрын
I look at it a bit differently. Ryu's theme traditionally has a driving feel to it, because it matches Ryu's drive to better himself, and later on, overcome the dark Hado. His 3rd Strike theme is more percussion based and has much heavier use of tradition Japanese instruments, which says to me that Ryu can't move forward in life; he's stuck in the past, trying to do what he's been doing his whole life in the hope that he can finally surpass his hurdles. This theme has few instances of Japanese instruments and overall has a more Western sound to it. This tells me that Ryu has finally overcome his struggles and discovered who he really is and finally able to move on. He is Japanese, hence the Japanese instruments, but he's more than that; he's more than just "Japanese Karate man" and enjoys wandering the world and experiencing all that can be experienced. I will admit, I don't like this theme as much other SF6 themes and even themes from older games, but this is what I think when I hear this song.

I think Ryu's theme fits him perfectly. I've never thought of him as the japanese fighter, but the "World Warrior" he has seen so much, done so much. He's defined by his travels and the places he's been. The best representation of his identity would not be his nationality but of his experiences across the world. So this jazzy upbeat theme from an entirely different place, feels like it fits him so well. Plus theres still some hints of japanese styled instruments and music in his theme just more in the background.

I think what they aimed for most of all is for the OST to have a cohesive feel to it. A lot of SF6 is an answer to SF5s blunders and one thing that game lacked is a cohesive aesthetic. In terms of music there were absolute bangers in there and some total misses, but they were pretty much all totally different, now in 6, while they are more background-y you can really get the feeling of "yes, this is the SF6 soundtrack".
@user-tzzglsstle585e38 Жыл бұрын
If anything; they're less background-y compared to sf5 where the all music had the same frequency through-out where as sf6 changes per round since it's adaptive. (Although Dee Jay, Dhalsim and Lily definitely feels more background-y, which isn't great imo)
@Ronin11111111 Жыл бұрын
@@user-tzzglsstle585e38 Wether it's dynamic or not doesn't really affect "backgroundyness" for me. SF6 songs don't really pump me up like Rashids theme from 5, the mood it gets me into is "concentration" rather than "hype". Which again is irrelevant from wether I like the songs or not. I'd say I like most of them, more than Max for sure (Gief, Juri and Marissas themes for example, really dig those), Guile, I don't like either, and Luke and Ken are just okay.

@@Ronin11111111 Rashid isn't the best example, because: 1) We have no idea about Rashid's SF6 theme, what if his theme will be no less banger(just in another direction) 2) Rashid, in context of SF5, was a freshyear, so even if his theme wouldn't be as banger as it is, it still would be a preety nice theme, because it's a NEW one(or because it's d'n'b.
