Does Super Mario Maker 2 Have Same-Screen Multiplayer? Possible Proof Found in Direct & eShop!

Super Mario Maker 2 is the first Mario platformer to feature online multiplayer - while that's quite a breakthrough for the series, fans are concerned whether the game will feature any local multiplayer outside of building. Thanks to a small clip from the Direct and the eShop listing, there still seems to be hope!

@@paptart6289 Ultimate is fine for a lot of people. I believe people just like to meme it up by saying it's laggy mess, when in reality, they have bad internet. I've seen PS4 and Xbone games lag bad around here when I watch my buddies play them -(don't care to look up what games they were)- and they have amazing internet. Sometimes, it just happens. I'd say multiplayer is very essential for Super Mario Maker 2. Couch co-op is what made NSMB so fun, watching everyone accidentally jump on each other and get upset. All of it was in great fun. There's lots of games I feel would benefit from multiplayer. Off the top of my head, I know SM64DS could've benefited a lot from implementing co-op for the entire game on top of Star Battle. That really killed some fun potential.

@@paptart6289 You're forgetting NSMB DS had co-op until the last minute in development. It was planned and showcased. I don't care about it surpassing the expectations of the original game. I care about it adding more to the game, as a nice bonus. Think about it. Goemon's Great Adventure has two-player co-op. If you beat the game, developers thought, "why don't we let them unlock a mode with *four* players" and, just because why not, you can mess around with two more people. I love this stuff because it adds more. It's not essential, but at the same time, why discard it in the first place? Which is why I'm glad Nintendo is adding it to Super Mario Maker 2. My friends and I love playing games together and this is just another fun experience to look forward to.

Samescreen is cool, but I'd also enjoy having splitscreen if it means we're not tied to the other players' movements. I'd imagine this would come at the cost of not only space on the screen, but also with frame rate drops, especially with crazier levels.

Near the beginning of the Direct, it shows a clip of uploading a course from Coursebot. To the side is a button seemingly featuring four players- similar to the one in the Editor, only 4 this time. More multiplayer confirmation...?

I saw that too. My thought is maybe you can only do same console multiplayer in the Coursebot on levels you've created or ones that you have downloaded from online, but not in the Course World on online levels

I think I have proof that same screen multiplayer in in the game. On the coursebot thing it shows an icon of red, green, pink, and blue. Coursebot can be played offline, so yeah.

The hidden theme is btw Mario Odyssey because the themes are sorted by date and after 3D World there's pretty much just Odyssey. That's my theory on this

You don’t know that for sure I want to believe that it could be super Mario odyssey but it would be a lot of work to port odyssey to a 2D platform especially since that game is far from 2D. I believe it could be land 2 or brothers 2 because that theme is a better choice logically for the extra styles tab instead of dreamy reality thinking we could get odyssey but once again odyssey would be amazing if Nintendo added the theme.

Hey, I noticed something! So, the eShop says "Single Console: 1-4 Players", right? When you want to build a level with someone else together you can only play with 2 players, as shown by how many controllers can be synced up in this scene: 1:54. So, what about player 3 and player 4? Can a third and fourth player only join the fun in actual levels?

When they showed the screen when you share levels in the direct, there was a button with 4 people (presumably multiplayer) on the far right. Maybe it allows the creator to make levels that allow for a specific amount of players, so that puzzle level creators can set it to single player (as some puzzles would break with multiple players) and other level creator can allow for 4 players. It may also make it so some levels are opted out of being in the online mode.

This could be something you guys already noticed, but I thought i'd point out that at 0:23 when Mario jumps and ends up dying that he is actually doing a long jump. If you slow it down it makes it a lot easier to tell. Again, don't know if this was already pointed out, but I just noticed it now while watching.

Another piece of evidence supporting local multiplayer is that at the beginning of the Direct, where the Coursebot showcases a level being uploaded, on the right side of the screen you can see a multiplayer icon, suggesting that you can play either your own levels or ones that you’ve downloaded with other people on the same system.

There is another hint at same-screen multiplayer in the direct. Near the beginning when it shows the saved desert course, on the right there is a button with four people on it being red, green, blue and pink which obviously hints at Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad and Toadette respectively. This button could also just let you pick which character you play as for single player though.

Yep, seems like the only thing we probably won’t get is the camera zooming in or out, so you’ll be more likely to go off-screen when playing local co-op on the same system. They’re most likely minimizing this game experience because it’s not as good as playing locally across multiple systems (and sells less copies)

One thing no one is talking about... when you create a level and you add another person the switch only gives 2 boxes for 2 players, so that mean some other mode on one switch must be 1-4 players, so that has to mean you can play couch co op with 1 system

It has to be local multiplayer because think about if you build a level for only Mario you get to test and play your level as Mario so it would make sense that if you make a course for multiplayer you’d be able to test and play your levels as multiplayer

Another small weird thing with Mario and Luigi footage : the snake blocks don't seem to move. So either you can place snake blocks that won't move, either that confirms snake blocks need to be touched to be activated, like skull trains.

The fact that you can put "multiplayer" tag in your level meaning you built it mainly for multiplayer alone should give you option for "testing" it locally.

Multiplayer building only allowed up to two controllers at the same time, if the controller conect screen is anything to go by. If that's the case, the "1-4 players" in the e-shop should mean that offline multiplayer is in the game
