It does not matter if she races enough or not the idea of racing is that when you race is for the win and she wins most of her races. she is smart enough not to tire her body for important races.

I think her lack of races has to do with location (Europe) and the lack of money. If she gets $100k from a commercial or photo shoot, why travel around the world for 10k? I'd love to see her more often but I do understand.

That's another good point. Rai Benjamin has spoke about how much of a hassle it is to travel to Europe from LA just for a 1 day meet. But I think 15 races throughout the year was a good amount of races

I want to see the numbers when we compare meets competed at rather than races. Over half of Sydney’s 2024 season was just Olympic Trials and Olympics (7 races including 4x4).
@TheFinalLeg
@TheFinalLeg Ай бұрын
I thought about that at first, but then I think because of the quality she puts down, I think the races are also just as important. She ran 52.13 and 52.48 in semi finals at Olympics and Trials, respectively, which are two of the fastest times in the world (6th and 12th). If any other athlete ran thoes times in a one off race (i.e. like Rushell Clayton or Anna Cockrell have) then it would be a big deal. But I hear you for sure!

Great topic and analysis! The timing and frequency of the races are sometimes more consequential than the sum total. For example, I was shocked to see that Dos Santos raced only 16 times this year, because I was under the impression that he really exhausted himself just before the Olympics, appearing frequently in races in Europe, while his main competitors trained and rested properly. And indeed, he underperformed in the Olympics, and did not fulfil the great expectations raised by his phenomenal Diamond League performances before the Olympics.
@TheFinalLeg

Appreciate that! And yea it's a good point that when races occur is a good point. Maybe if you race too much too early, that can affect you, but on the flip side if you don't race enough and get in a rhythm (like hurdlers like to get) then you may not be as ready as you need.

At the 5:34 mark notice how many people who ran less than 20 races are almost all 400m sprinters whether flat or hurdles. Only Tebogo and Bol ran more. And one can argue Tebogo shouldn't really count because he only ran the 400m relay. He's not a primary 400m runner.

Several coaches prefer to use meets for pre-major competition readiness. Coach Meuwly being one of them. Studying Coach Kersee going back to the '80's, his approach has been certainly different. When it's "right", in his eyes, he cuts them loose!

I think the main reasons is like Emerole said, that Sydney doesn't compete in the major T&F league (Diamond League) and her major competitor Femke Bol does very often. I also think because she's a huge generational athlete that could succeed in 3-4 events that fans want to her more of her. While I don't mind that she doesn't compete in Europe, I do love that her and her Coach prioritizes local meets in the U.S. I think there needs to be more focus and investment in those meets to bring more people in stateside.

I don’t think it’s a Sydney issue…it’s this generation. They hardly race…Shelly raced a lot, the older greats raced and competed against each other often and had long careers. Hmm, not quite sure it's a generation thing. Granted, back in the day many athletes did compete more than they do now, so that's fair. Would we like to see Sydney more sure. But I believe she is playing the long game and doesn't want to get burnt out. She races when she needs to race for conditioning or for the major events and there shouldn't be anything wrong with that. I believe this will pay off when or if she decides to run the 400m flat or maybe even the 200m in the future. She may want to go after the double (200m and 400m) in 2028 Olympics. She will be 29 then with less pounding on the body than most. And if she decides to take it another notch and do the same thing in 2032 Olympics she has that capacity do so. Sometimes quality over quantity is best. I'm getting my daughter to understand as a track athlete herself. We don't need to race at every meet and it's okay to do all field events too instead of running all the time because we want to be as fresh as possible for the big meets. I will give much kudos to Shamier Little when she attempted to make the Olympic team as both a 400m sprinter and 400m hurdler. I know she made the relay teams and at least won gold and silver in Paris but I'm sure it was taxing on her body trying to make both teams in the 400m space during the USA trials.

Good point, and probably very smart if she is in fact playing the long game. Next year with Grand Slam Track she will have more 400H/400 races, but not sure if she will dip her toes into the 200m again. 100% agree that quality over quantity is a good move. We can see that Sydney's career is clearly working out very well. And good call out on Shamier. Its interesting as Ashely Spencer did a similar 400/400H double at US Trials in 2016, and eventually won Olympic bronze in Rio

I think it depends on various athletes' goals for the season, the coach' direction for them, what their bodies can take and other factors. Some athletes want to break a certain threshold in terms of times or distances in a certain amount of events. Others may want to compete in a lot of events to keep their body active & to handle multiple rounds of racing or competing. In some circumstances, some athletes are very picky in how they compete & will want to get best results possible from their own training program to analyse and work on for the next competition. And obviously, there are injury factors in terms either not wanting to get hurt more or being preventative to avoid any major injuries by competing too much, leading to burn out by Nationals or Worlds/Olympics. There are couple more factors involving travelling which I think is one of the biggest reasons why you don't see Sydney or Rai or others compete often. The tiredness you can experience from travelling from one country to the next, fatigue on the body, not having your favourite foods etc. Perhaps, there's a priority from the coach or the athlete themselves to protect the athlete from getting unwarranted setbacks as well not showing all your cards against your competitors. Also money, some athletes got it and they can afford to travel or they don't need it and are happy to not travel so frequently for competitions and those who don't have the expenses and find it hard to travel as much as the higher paid athletes. Maybe if Sydney and some of the other Americans were European or European-Based, they would likely compete in the Diamond League more regularly because transportation in between Europe is more quicker than travelling from one continent to the next.
@TheFinalLeg
@TheFinalLeg Ай бұрын
Agree that every athlete, coach and team is going to be different so the number of races is going to vary based on their needs. And yea Rai has spoken openly about the complexities of traveling from Los Angeles to Europe is not easy and it does not make much sense when you can stay local. Its very similar for certain European based athletes, as they are not traveling to the USA very often unless its for Pre Classic or another really big meet. Great points!

That list is enlightening. It’s annoying when people expect Sydney to adhere to choices another athlete is making for her own career. Especially one that has never even beat her. It’s not just Syd. For me it’s the lack of competing against top talent. The untaken path to sub 48 is not just PEDS. I’m almost 60 so I remember the 80s. The Eastern Bloc women competed against each other multiple times per month. 4x400 happened ALL the time. How many times have we seen Syd vs Paulino vs el Nasser vs Bol ? 0. Imagine a year where they competed 3 or 4 times. Plus add in a few 300s with Gabby and Sherica. Does anyone think a sub 48 wouldn’t happen?
@edabakah
@edabakah Ай бұрын
I think the biggest issue are the deescalators in most of the athletes contracts. Losses can mean not getting the pot from the meet but also less money from their sponsors. One of the reasons I am a fan of the Grand Slam Track idea is the racers get fixed comp to go along with place bonuses. Hopefully between GST, DL and Duael we get Syd, Paulino, Naser and Femke in a race...throw in Price, Kaczmarek, Adeleke, Holmes and that's a race I'll pay to watch 3-4 times a season

Her schedule seems to be on the basis of managing the body and peaking accordingly for the US Trials and World or Olympic Games. No-one had an issue when Karsten Warholm declined a huge payout to go to Prefontaine 2 years ago or with Femke & Jakob saying Grand Slam Track doesn't interest them because they don't want to travel that far to compete. Meanwhile Sydney has to travel that same distance to compete in the DL and if she was doing that regularly she probably wouldn't be running 50 low in the 400H. She competed more than enough this year but people still act as if she was at 2 meets so I've realised they'll only be happy when she's in the Diamond League specifically. I honestly have no interest in seeing her win every 400mH on the DL circuit, I'd rather she stuck to 200s and 400s if she started running DL more. It's also funny that there are 5+ top athletes that competed less than Sydney this year and have received 0 criticism (because it's not actually that big of an issue and people are just predisposed to criticise Sydney based on her low activity from previous years) I made this comment before watching, you definitely touched on that last point. (and to be clear, not comparing Faith vs Sydney this just came up in conversation). But yea I'm not even sure I want to see every athlete competing 20+ times a year, especially if it does not work for them as an individual athlete. Sydney doesn't race consistently. Heats from trials and Championships should not be included. The only understandable reason for lack of racing is injuries. She is mostly healthy. I do know the sport suffers from lack of exposure and financial benefit. However, athletes like Sydney doesn't make those issues any easier. Why should investors spend their money in a sport when its top athletes is not competing consistently? It seems that Bobby athletes don't compete. It works for Sydney but look at Athing, due to her lack of running she wasn't race sharp and suffered at the trials in 2024. This is the only sport that makes excuses for a lack of competing. Both Sydney and Faith continued their winning streaks in the 400mH and the 1500m respectively. Both broke their own Olympic records in Paris that they had set previously set in Tokyo. Both broke their own world records in their respective events this season. Both won every race they entered for their aforementioned respective events, not including Faith's 1500m heat in Paris (where she clearly conserved energy for the later rounds as she would be an automatic qualifier anyway). Both have been shortlisted for the World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year Award, and so both are on course to win it for the second time; it would be two-in-a-row for Faith. And coincidentally, Sydney won the award in 2022 and Faith in 2023. They have each pushed the limit in their events -- Sydney almost breaking 50 in the 400mH, and Faith breaking 3:50 in the 1500m. So, it would be great to see what more Sydney can do in the open 400m, and Faith in the 5000m or a longer distance, but both women have had stellar seasons.

Beatrice Chebet started the yr winning the XC World Champs, then destroyed the 10K WR @Pre Classic by a huge 7s & was literally the only T&F Athlete to win Individual Double OLY Golds in Paris (5/10K)! Also ran the 7th & 8th fastest 5K times ever in addition to the 3rd fastest time in history that she ran last yr.

@@AllInTheGame01 Beatrice was one of my favourite athletes to watch near the end of the season. It’s a shame she didn’t break the 5000m WR in any of her attempts in the Diamond League, but that sub-14 is coming next year! I was also impressed by Winfred Yavi, who was so close to the 3000m SC WR in the Rome DL. On this note, who do you think will / who do you want to win World Athletics Athlete of the Year for each category, in light of the named nominees?

@@sportsgod-c2d Would love to see peak Chebet/Kipyegon/Tsegay going at it next yr in a DL 5K to be the 1st to run that sub 14m WR :) Felt sorry for Yavi missing that 3K SC WR by just 0.08s! Re WA Noms, I like the lists so far, but wouldn't have minded seeing both M&W Field Lists expanded to 6 to match the number of Track Noms to include Camryn Rogers & Arshad Nadeem to highlight their achievements this yr. Think both awards will very likely go to Mondo & Mahuchikh given their OLY Golds & WRs despite Yaroslava's surprise Silver @World Indoors which unfortunately prevented the 'perfect season'. Re Female Track Noms, even as a Gabby fan & with both winning 1 Individual OLY Gold each, I think Keely should've had that nom instead having had the stronger season by staying unbeaten in her primary 800m event while Gabby lost a couple of her 200m races. Keely also ran a 1.54.61 NR moving her up the notoriously difficult 800m all-time list to #6 just behind Semenya's 1.54.25 & Quirot's 1.54.44 which is very impressive! It's the most competitive category so far but I'm leaning towards Beatrice just over Syd & Faith who I think had a slightly stronger season last yr & should've won the overall AoTY Award imo! Re Male Track Noms, can't decide between Grant & Letsile, wouldn't mind either one winning it.

Not with you on this one; especially when compared to the athletes who she is up against for athlete of the year. Other athletes ran 3 disciplines at three major tournaments and major events like the Diamond league. The truth is outside of the years where Sydney had trials and a major championship she has hardly ran!

I respect the opinion! But I think "outside of years she had trials and major champs" is just the off years. I'm not sure those years matter too much anyway. Also, in her pro career, she has never had an off year yet. But all respect and appreciate you watching!💯

@@TheFinalLeg- I think all and all everyone knows that Sydney is a goat athlete. I think though most people have issue with the fact the she really only runs trials, WCs and Olympics! Outside of that she hardly ever does a DL event but instead chooses to run the smaller events in the US as per Bobby Kersey! Sadly in my view I think it is the latter which disqualifies her for AOTY!

Smh, this video comes to make a case for her for athlete of the year. Let's face the facts, all this talk about all rounder is overrated. She is not a top 3 200m or 400m worldwide. When u talk about Jamaicans you don't mention Jamaican trials or any solely Jamaican events because it doesn't reflect compared to the rest of the world. So as far as I'm concerned this year she has only and only Excell in the 400m hurdle

AOY for the sprints jumps and hurdles which is what I cover on my channel (I already did a video on woman's athlete of the year). Both Beatrice Chebet and Faith Kipyegon had better years than Sydney IMO. But I respect the opinion and thanks for watching!
