I love Julien, but she did not go undefeated and did not break a world record. We know that everyone does not run indoors. Also, some of Julien's competitors were not healthy (i.e. Frazier-Price and Sherika Jackson). Julien never beat Gabby Thomas in 200M, but Syd did. Again, I love Julien, but she is not Syd yet. Anyone who can easily beat Femke Bol is my choice.

Julien because she medalled won global medals in 3 separate track events. 60m 100m and 200m, She did this accross various leagues/championships. I originally put Yaroslava 1st, but the one loss split the difference. Its tricky because were comparing different events, but Sydney for me had enough success in the 400/200 (top-10 performer in both this year) and broke the world record twice. Your right about Paulino. Theres an argument that this is the greatest 400m season since the 1980s. Naser in 2019 went undefeated, but she only ran sub 49 once that year (49.14) while Paulino did it twice this year. She was better than Perec in 1996, Miller-Uibo in 2021 and Sanya in 2009. Were only talking about Kratochvílová in 1983 and maybe Koch in 1985, 1982 or 1984, but she didn't win anything those years (her 1980 olympic gold was not a great)

@TheFinalLeg Yaroslava at Nr.1 would be the right choice. Everybody on that list had an amazing season, so it's tough to pick. However, European Gold, Olympic Gold and breaking that ridiculously long standing world record puts her on top. People don't understand how high 2,10m really are. Only 3 women this year jumped over 2m if I'm not mistaken and every centimeter past that height is s big achievement. And she jumped 10cm!! past this barrier and 4cm better than her previous best. An unbelievable performance! If someone was to run 9,45sec in the 100m, he surely would be the Athlete of Year, regardless of winning any medals. That's how good that record is. And she added to 2 Championship Golds on top of that!
@jamesglyer5385Ай бұрын
I forgot to add, and it is better to be separate, my appreciation for putting this together. I would have liked to have all of the events in for consideration but we have certain things we know well, and making an assessment with a lower level of knowledge in the distance events, etc. is very wise to avoid. BTW on the men's side it is hands down Mondo Duplantis; his average margin of victory was unreal, his yearly domination of the list speaks volumes, and this is with a competitive field that is about as good as we have had at least in a long time and probably as good as any. And Consistency is stunningly good. The sprint time beating KW even though he does not really train for a long sprint and does not do starts from the blocks...

Many athletes don't do indoors because that's not where the money is, especially in an Olympic year. Paulino made $200k in prize money alone this outdoor season, if she had been trying to beat Femke indoors this year no way would she have been able to hold good form the entire outdoor season. As for PEDs cycles, many athletes who do both indoors and outdoors are doping so I don't think you have much of a point there. There's also the fact that some people don't grow up with there being an indoor track in their country and as such don't particularly value indoor championships as they weren't brought up paying attention to them.
@aodoemelaАй бұрын
Sydney not #1 imo when you have people who won indoors and won the diamond leauge or broke world records. Alfred for example she got two individual medals at the olympics, indoor gold medal and diamond leauge trophy. Sydney only has one individual awards for the entire season. Yaroslava has three as well two gold and one silver plus she has the world record. The women's high jump record was a long standing record as well so it means much more to break it than the hurdles record. Outside of the olympics sydney didn't win or medal at any major meets so how can she be the greatest of the season if other people did and also broke records?
@ElliottklassenАй бұрын
I agree that Yaroslava has the best case of everybody here. Still, Sydney probably has the second best case. Nobody in an Olympic year truly cares about indoor medals, and nobody is training to peak for the diamond league finals. Julien was great, but Sydney destroyed her own world record (a record which I believe people have come to take lightly. Also, she has now broken her world record more time than any other track athlete, male or female, has ever done in any single event ever.) and became the first woman in the history of her event to win multiple Olympic titles. She staked her claim as the undisputed greatest of all time in her event. On the side she also ran some phenomenal 400m flat times, and one of the fastest 4x400m splits in history en route to her relay gold medal as well. I get that people are salty she doesn’t compete as much as they would like, but that doesn’t take away from the reality of how great she is when she *does* touch the track. And again, I agree with you about Mahuchikh. She is clearly the most deserving of these women.
@TheFinalLegАй бұрын
I cant be mad at that take. I think I put her as number 1 considering the records she broke, the depth of her hurdle times, winning the Gold, and the fact she ranked as a top 10 performer in the 400m and 200m this year. She ran enough races compared to others and went undefeated. Its of course close and can very much be debated so I respect the opinion for sure! I originally had Yaroslava ahead, but I think the one loss was what kept her at no.2 for me. But again, I'm not mad at all if you have Yaroslava at no.1, she truly is deserving and literally made history with that World record!
@aodoemelaАй бұрын
@@ElliottklassenYaroslava also broke a 400m world record from the 80s again I don't think I need to explain why that is significant. I believe it stood for 37 years so it was clearly a strong record. Its not really fair comparing the 400mH world records to the other world records you need to contextualise it, in part because the event was introduced very late to the olympics. It only got added in 1984 meaning the Olympic and World Records and the event as a whole is a step behind the other events. The 400m WR also comes from an era rebound for drug use and performances overall have declined since. People have their opinions on Naser and her country Bahrain who have both had anti-doping violations as well. In contextually for 2024 and if we you are at all interested in clean sport, then 48.17 might is an very impressive performance that some might consider the true world record as they consider 10.54 the true 100m world record. There are two top objectives - winning the OGs and setting the WR. Other competitions are part of that journey but they are only the journey, not the objective. Do you have any doubt that Syd could have race the 400H every week of the season and won all of them. It does not make great theater to have those races. The best focus on what is important and try to obtain it. Since Syd did that as perfectly as is possible to do, complaining that she did not race enough... 100h 1-0, 200, 2-0 including beating the OG Champ by 0.30, 400m 2-0, including finishing fast than MP in the companion race, 400h 6-0, 4-0 in heats and semis, 2-0 in Finals. Then the almost WR aggregate with her 47.71 in the 4x400; Alfred had no similar relay leg at all. Medals are due to four peo;le so her not winning much relay gold is not a mark against her, but not having a great relay leg is a mark that is a small MIA.

People can have their favorites, but Julian hardly had a winning record in her two main events. [the Indoors is prep for the outdoors and does not draw much of the top sprinters and they are not working to peak there so way too much is made of it when you are trying to get things to up you favorite. The "real" WR in is 10.5x (not the badly wind-aided mistake record of 10.49); even with that and better shoes and tracks she is not close and not close to the Jamaican sprints of the last decade (10.5s, 10.6s) so when you compare that to the World Record and that she did it twice on the biggest stages [US Trials had the 1, 2, and 4 from the Olympics] and of course the OGs. Femke ran a 50.95 but the aiding effect of altitude makes it the equivalent of 50.15 and is clearly the second best 400H runner ever, but that time is 0.50 slower than Syd's first Final at the OTs and then was over threee-fourths of a second slower than the OG record. And Syd won the 400h by a second and a half, that is like a margin of 0.30 in the 100 (i.e., all the others in the 100 would have had to fail to break 11. Alfred is not beating any of the top five runners ever and is not yet in their class. When Sydney starting getting really good the WR was 52.34 or so - Syd has now taken two seconds off of that. to get a similar improvement on the WR in the 100 Alfred would have to run about 10.10. Then Syd beat the 200m OG Champ by 0.30 seconds, the woman who was 2-0 over Alfred. She ran 48.75 in the 400 and in the DL Final, the dominant 400m runner was slower than Syd's time run a few minutes before (and run without any competition to help her) and she did that with really doing much flat race training. Finally, to top things off and give historical perspective, that last two times Syd lost it took a World Record to beat her and since then (2019) she has not lost a single 400h race and in every one of her Finals races in that period she has broken the World's Record. Alfred had a pretty good season, but I would not rank her ahead of either Faith K or the High Jump star. As much as I like Syd's two WRs, neither really compares to breaking to everyone's surprise the 37-year old record. [One of these things is not like the other, one of these things doesn't belong.] It is ultimately just my opinion but if you do not have a good grasp of the sport and look at a very good 2024 year, but not a particularly good year compared to almost every year in the last decade or more than you need to know a lot more than what has been said here. [now I guess that I will get flamed here, but flaming is without any content if it does not address each of the ways that Syd had the best year.

Last time l checked Gabby Thomas had 3 Gold Olympic medals.🤔 Ms.Alfred has 1 Olympic Gold Medal, she ain't even in the running.🤔

@ronaldwesby4995 the relays don't hold as much significance as the individual events.

She was the least impressive leg on both of her relay gold medals... and St. Lucia has no relay teams so it's not a fair comparison

Another hater. Let me put it on short. You guys are just mad that shacarri lost to julien. Sore losers. Americans are looking for any way to discredit this olympic gold. Truth is no matter how many KZbin videos you make, comments and takes, the fact remains. Julien alfred is olympic 100m gold. Try to swallow that today cuz you will have to at some point. I'm just trying to help the haters. Wasted energy peeps. Get over it

@bloodlinekennelclub you are the one with the wasted energy. Many if not most Americans are proud of Julien as a product of our sports system and current US resident. She is well loved here. ShaCarri did well too. You the only one bringing this up. Just because he said Gabby did well has absolutely nothing to do with ShaCarri. In case you didn't know, they are 2 different people. Now you stop hating and stay on subject.

@kpat3052 omg. Lol. So self centered. This is my point. This is not about America or any nation. Jesus Christ.. lol.. it's not your fault so used to hate crimes over there. I'm from a loving nation my bruv. Get your head out the gutter. Again, st lucians, Americans and maybe some Jamaicans may have known about juju before but after winning olympic gold in the most viewed event she has more worldwide status. After 3 comments clearly stating this you still come back talking about America and even go as far as trying to pitch that America made her. I saw what u did there. FYI, alot of athletes from the Caribbean go across the globe on scholarship whether it be through scouts coming to recruit which means that these athletes benefit the school and their credentials over time so it's not a one way stretch or whether it be through their own island awarding them with a scholarship so it's paid for not free. So all credit is due to this girl cuz it starts there.
