We lived in Thailand for 3 years and we have had phad krapao khai and so many thai dishes in wonderful small street side restaurants like these that actually represents the wonderful thailand in general, and we have never had stomach problems just because the food were from "street side" restaurants, like come on! One thing is assured that some of the most tastiest local thai dishes can be found in restaurants like these where the humble owners and home chefs cook from their heart and they know the real recipes, trust me! To be fair, thais are generally very clean and they make sure to keep their surroundings clean as well. Really miss the local vibes of Bangkok and hope to go back soon!

In my opinion many Thais not very clean, especially street food stuff. Wooden Cutboards they cut raw chicken on it and later on the cooked chicken , without cleaning it all day (in tropical conditions). The Street-Food you get is mostly made of the cheapest stuff they find on the market, often highly contaminated with pesticides (lack of control). The oil they use for cooking is the cheapest also often Palm-Oil or Soybean-oil (unhealthy). Cooking conditions are for Western Standards really unclean, highly contaminated with pesticides, use massive amounts of sugar and Oil. you maybe get not sick but Thai food is really far away from "Healthy food" For me Thai food ist mostly too Sweet and Oily mixed with chilli.

@@iPlany With due respect, I agree to some points that you have mentioned about the vendors not being hygenic enough and etc, but you also have to keep in mind that the people who are street side vendors are just simple earners who works day and night under scorching heat, feeding hundreds of people at such a cheap price. Not only just tourists, most of the thai population are dependent on street side vendors because it is comparitively much affordable and less time consuming than buying groceries and cooking at home. Its absolutely an individual's choice where they want to eat from, expensive restaurants or street side vendors selling the same food but at different prices. Thailand street food is famous all around the world for its taste, uniqueness, wide range and variety and the love that can be tasted through their food, and the best part is that it is affordable.

I lived in Thailand for over 5 years. I also enjoyed lots of street food 😋 In all that time, I only ever got food poisoning twice. Once in a Western brand name 5 star hotel. The other time, from ice (made from contaminated water) in a random bar I'd never been to before. I stand by the theory that Thai street food, particularly from street carts, where they literally can't store more than they can prepare and sell on any given day. So, their food is likely to be far fresher than restaurants with cold storage facilities. I definitely recommend trying Thai street food and tiny places just like the one in this video!

As a former chef I didn’t see a dirty surface in the whole place. On the street, with all the traffic passing by, it only takes a few days for the dust there to mix with stir fry oil to create dark grey fur everywhere. That place was spotless. Good job with meat storage. Plus those places don’t get more than a few days worth of supplies from the market at a time. I admit though that some morning market vendors sketch me out sometimes with how they handle their proteins. Love Thai street food!!

George Orwell writes of it in his book , Down and Out in Paris and London, whereby the elaborate dishes coming out the kitchen out the back served to the rich at posh hotels and restaurants was handled, arranged and touched by so many chefs that one was more likely to get sick. Here after ingredients get thrown in the wok, the food is not touched at all and it's all out in the open for everyone to see.

Best way to eat. You can see the food and its freshness. I've worked in 5-Star restaurant kitchens in the West and if you saw what goes on, out of sight, you would be shocked to the core. Just don't be upset, but embrace the adventure, if you get something you didn't order due to misinterpretation. I once ordered two poached eggs on toast with bacon (fancying a Western breakfast) but received a chicken-toastie with a bowl of mushroom soup - yet it was the best toastie and soup of my life. LOL

Agree that it takes a bit to get up the gumption to eat from a local shop in SEAsia. But once you cross that threshold, it is next to impossible to cross back. I started in Hong Kong almost 30 years ago and little by little, I peeled back the layers. Not of the shops or the food, but of my own eyes and expectations. Tasty treasures await--hidden in plain sight--if you take those first steps.

Yes, I like how you talk about Thai street food restaurants like that. It's an invitation for most people who don't dare open up to that kind of environment. but if you notice You know it's a people's house so it doesn't look very clean. Certain kitchen utensils, of course, don't change every month and each day they don't serve a single dish. If it's not clean or has bacteria as some comments say. Of course, I've been eating like this for 17 years. I'm probably sick. But I'm fine hahaha

Great watch! I used to visit a place just like this for lunch when working in Sriracha. It’s where all the locals ate and tbh it was delicious food. And there was no menu……you just asked for what you wanted and they rustled it up 🙂

Thanks Chris!!! I love those places! I'm a Yankie, who adores these "older, eateries run by the elderly who know how to cook!!!!" I tell my compatriots and family, "stay away". I don't want them coming to Thailand. I love Thailand just the way it is! (I had food poisoning twice, always at "Sizzler" which is a western establishment. Told my Thai wife, no more western eateries of any kind).

Have to agree with you Chris and Hayley, Thai Street food is the best! At first you may feel a bit apprehensive, but as you said, once tried you will never look back! You're making my wife and I hungry, we going out now to grab some Street Pad Kapow Moo Gob!

I got food poisonning 3 times in Thailand over 30 years. 1st time from shrimp fried rice in a food court. 2nd time from a pork dish on the street and the last time from barbecued liver from a street cart vendor. I ended up in hospital 2 times. (night time) Could not stand the pain anymore. The last time on the day I was supposed to fly back home. I had to rebook. And yes I have been eating in places like that...lots of time.

Also, it's been my experience traveling abroad that street food is generally one of the safest food options abroad. The worst food risk (in my experience) are buffet-type restaurants where the food has been sitting around.

I usually get a quirky stomach once a trip. I think my gut just needs an adjustment period. I love these places. They're all over S.E. Asia and have incredible food for half of what I pay at home. I think I'd have just as big a chance of getting the trots if I ate at the KFC down the street.

Love it, unfortunately the same thing here in Vancouver would be $15 each. It is like Anthony Bourdain said, street food vendors are not going to poison their neighbors. Sometimes there is bacteria and it may be a case that your body is not used to it, ie think about drinking water in mexico or another country.

I'm staying in France for almost 4 years. Before moving to Paris, I rarely ate spicy food because I could not find much of Asian ingredients in countryside. But you can find them easily in Asian quartier of Paris. At first, my stomach could not handle spiciness too. Moreover, I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. So I had to increase spiciness moderately for my beloved dishes. Thanks for VDO and hope you enjoy Thailand.

I think the food in Thailand is very competitive in terms of pricing. Since salt is the super enhancer of flavor in food,(and salt is inexpensive) Thai foods are generally 80-90 % more salty than other cuisine. I always know when there is a Thai cook doing the cooking in the kitchen because it is ALWAYS extremely salty. This applies to even Thai cooks making Chinese food. I just went to a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant near Chong Nonsi and their dumplings were actually GOOD! Even Thai government have enacted legislation to regulate how much salt you are allowed to put in the foods in Thailand and violators are supposed to pay a "salt tax" if they put too much sodium in their foods. Thailand has an extremely high incidence of kidney disease due to the high salt intake in their diet! 🙂

You are right. But in Thailand, you can always order the chef to cook according to your taste: mild spicy, very spicy , not salty or not sweet. So you can enjoy every meal you order and for your good health too.

Lived in Thailand 25 years. On a rare occasion you might get a little stomach gurgle for 24 hours but it’s very rare. I’m also a veteran of multiple trips to most asian countries due to work and the worst offenders for street food problems in my book are India, Myanmar, Bangladesh & Nepal.

We eat at local Thai restaurants and street food all the time over the years. We have not had any bad experiences, and we have not become ill. I, however, can no longer eat really spicy food so I need to (sadly) always ask them to tone down the chili. Very spicy food can cause stomach sensitivity for some people (like me).

Been to Thailand 2 times, on the first suffered quite a bit with food poisoning (I narrowed it down to a either a pad thai in khao San or a Tom Yum Seafood soup in Phi Phi) but lesson learned... see where most locals are eating, basic places like the one on the video most of the times are the best, get a fair bit of rice in every meal. Second time, slightly under the weather probably caused by a shrimp fried rice on the beach in koh lipe. Don't be afraid of trying the food, be prepared if some stomach issues happen 😅

Great video! My first trip I was sick every night for the month as well as a few people in my group even though we only ate at high end restaurants (just not used to the different bacteria ) I was foolishly eating raw lettuce in salads etc. but my second month long trip I was more daring and started eating at mom and pop spots and only got sick once but I’m pretty sure it was the Thai moonshine from the party lol. My third trip was two months and I ate tons of street food and only at mom and pop shops like from your video and didn’t get sick at all even eating raw veggies. And only once during 20 days in Vietnam…At this point I’m not worried at all I’ve got so much exposure..555. Now all I eat is places like this they’re the best!

As a rule, I try to stick to food that: - the locals eating - is prepared in front of me - In a place with a high turnover A good way to find nice places to eat is to follow office workers going for lunch. I traveled a lot in Asia including Thailand and India in the late seventies and early eighties without too many problems. One case I remember was in Burma. And in Venezuela where I ordered an oversized barbeque. They bring the meat and a small barbeque to the table. I was hungry and undercooked the meat... I noticed that Americans had more trouble with the food. They are used to preprocessed food with a shelf life of months...
