Would you be put off about buying a 14” M1 Pro MacBook after seeing this video? UPDATE: Vadim and Max Tech and I have discussed differences in temperatures we saw, and it turns out iStatistica hasn't been updated in a while to feature node temps for the SOC, so the numbers we saw were broadly for much of the rest of the system. While the SOC does get hotter, I still found in my test that surface temperatures and fan noise wasn't as bad as what they found in their test. Definitely an interesting conundrum!

I doubt it- historically changing the fan speeds hasn't had an effect because Apple prioritized max performance over temperatures. In this case, because there is so much thermal headroom I suspect the fans would lead to lower temperatures, but have no effect on performance

I would like to see a fan noise comparison between the 14” M1 and the intel 16” while in clamshell mode. I ask because i use my intel 16” macbook in clamshell configuration with it connected to two monitors at my desk. It runs like a hairdryer under load. I desire replacing it with a 14” for lighter travelling, but fear the increase in fan noise of a smaller chassis when compared to my 16” intel model. Is it possible that Apple’s new 14” is quieter than the intel 16’” model under load, or am i getting caught up in the hype? P.S. Good work on the video. Nicely done, and thanks for the time lapse and cutting straight to the figures. I appreciate it.

I was curious if the lower spec/binned 8 core 14" MBP has different battery life and charging speeds (67W vs 94W) compared to the other 14" models since its got less cores perhaps it consumes less power, lasts longer and runs cooler? I think it's a consideration cuz ppl considering the 14" MBP need the portability and battery life is a big part of that, would really appreciate such a comparison!!

As soon you try both in stores... you will realize: Ofc the 16" is "just" 0,5kg heavier, but in fact, the 16 AND 14" models fit easily into average and even small notebook cases/backpacks! In my opinion the 14" even feels thick, meanwhile the 16" with its "huge" screen (its just ok, i would have wished 17"...) is fine with its thickness. And only considering it weights just 20% more (for 42% bigger battery, much more silent, bigger fans and better thermals in overall!)... the 16" model has is own awesome advantages. I just tried a 14" convertible as my "on the go" notebook... its awesome... just 1,1kg or so.... especially with the touchscreen in tablet mode its really enjoyable, but in notebook mode, the 14" gets annoying, especially if you have more than 2 windows side by side open (or you just scale it down so you have to use a microscope) With the 16".... the bigger screen makes it so much more usable, totally worth the bigger footprint and especially the "just" 0,5kg more!

I use a 2019 MBP 16 as my work machine and have kept my 2015 MBP 15 as my spare. I do UX/UI design, which involves a lot of vector-based graphics and light image editing. Honestly, most users will not outpace the 2015 MBP, so many novices, as well as pros, can get away with buying a quality second-hand MBP and enjoy great performance. Geekbench scores can look mighty impressive, but much of the time all that power goes untapped. If I was into video editing, I'd 100% have the latest and greatest MBP.

Luke, Thanks for the videos! I'd like to see more Pro vs Max comparisons. Rendering isn't that important to me. I need to see more FCPX and Premier Timeline work with multiple videos, effects and transitions. The Verge comparison showed a little bit but they were vague with details. Blender workflow (not rendering) would be nice to see too, but I guess we need someone who knows how to use Blender to do that.

Returned my M1 pro 16" MacBook yesterday due to the large size and it is uncomfortable for traveling and public cafe/library! I ended up getting the MacBook Pro 14" with 10 core CPU/16 core GPU. With the $200 I saved going from 16" to 14", I ended up buying the 3 yrs $279 AppleCare+ warranty for the laptop. I bring along my 20,000mah Anker portable battery and it charges the 14' MacBook from 0-100% easy. Battery life is no longer an issue and I highly recommend the 14" MacBook pro M1! First of all, thank you so much Luke! Your tests are very, very helpful to us'ns in picking out the right product for ourselves. From a performance standpoint, it sounds like Apple is able to keep the 14" performing just as well as the 16", but they do it by running the fan harder, the downside being it cranks through battery power faster and some fan noise. To me, the takeaway is: If the fan noise is modest and when you're working it hard it's plugged into power, the 16" has no advantage on performance. It's real advantages are screen size, battery life (if you used it on battery a ton) and a little better sound. It's downside is portability. To me, there's no comparison. When I'm mobile, portability matters WAY more than a modest screen size increase and a little better battery life. Frankly, if I really care about screen size, not only is 14" not big enough, neither is 16". if I'm in my office, I can fix the image size and sound quality issues with an external display and reasonably decent speakers. Alternately, I just get the M1 Max Mac Mini whenever that rolls out... and I probably will. I can see the 16" being an advantage for some, but it seems like that's a VERY specific customer where the laptop needs to be SOMEWHAT portable... but not TOO portable. Just my 2¢.

Terrific video ( as well as the Pro vs Max one - which helped me decide that my use case is not-Max). My big decision now is 14 vs 16. I've spec'd out both at 10 CPU / 16 GPU / 16 RAM and 1TB SSD and at Amazon there's a $150 difference to go to 16". Since totally portable isn't an issue, and I do not graphics-intensive work, I'm thinking the 16". Have I missed anything here? PS ---- any thoughts on 16 RAM vs 32 RAM? So basically, the 14" is gonna be louder than the 16" M1 Pro, that is to say audible instead of silent, both with sustained max performance, and worlds quieter than the Intel 16". This is great. Finally we have a MacBook Pro that doesn't sound like a fighter jet when you push it, and doesn't thermal throttle (and no performance penalty for the smaller size!) I cannot wait till mine shows up.

Those fans must mean lots of power. Think, after the first run, the 16 inch lost ~6wH, while the 14 inch lost almost 10wH. So not only smaller battery, but also more heat management required to keep it cool. Something to think about when people go for the 14 because it’s the “same thing”

the battery life in the 16 inch is amazing, spent all day with plenty battery remaining (40%). 2017 15 Inch battery was terrible, I would get 2 hours before having to plug in. I initially ordered the 14 inch base on day 1 preorders began, but delivery wasn't expected until 24 November, I ended up cancelling it and went to a store (Apple Certified Seller) and got one over the counter with 10% discount special and picked up a 16 Inch for $300 more. Which was a good deal compared to base 14 inch. 14 Inch is great if you're travelling around and you need a bit more power than the Air or 13 Inch Pro. I can also say that I have never had any issue with the 2017 15 Inch MacBook Pro, Keyboard has been perfect, only had the battery replaced under warranty. These new MacBook Pros are nicer to hold with the softer edges when closed compared to previous ones that hard harder edges.

Most buyers would most certainly be better served by the 14" than the 16."
