Andre was criticized before for not knowing anything about trucks. I always thought it was just trolling. But at the same time Andre has become an expert and the entire TFL brand is respected in the auto review industry. You guys have developed a very reputable testing system for trucks and I think manufacturers are paying close attention. Credit to the entire team, and Mr Truck, but a lot of credit to Andre. Your style is great. It’s a winner.

Like how often do you need to look if it's on or off. What would be more helpful is the exhaust break staying on so, you don't have to check if it's on after turning your truck off and on. As it is now in the Chevrolet, the exhaust break must be reapplied at each start-up.

Not sure abort the new models, but my 2011 and 2018 have no dash indicator for the engine brake. The light is on the entire time you’re driving. The light means it’s activated, or will work when needed. It does not tell you when it is actually working or functioning.

We are de-evolving. I am sure of it. If it is too much to look a little bit to your right vs a little down to see if the brake is on, then something is wrong with you. Really. It is getting ridiculous. And yes, I am a miserable old bugger!

My 55 Chevy had one two options, an Hydramatic transmission and a wrap-around rear window. The transmission didn't last long, but the granny 4 speed was bulletproof. The rear window was nice. I don't know if the heater was an option but it had one. Turn those wing windows in and windows down, you had 4/60 a/c.

Tyler Sutherland how did it not show well? It's 1200 pounds heavier had 2 more wheels which makes more drag , got better fuel economy ,both had same time. The Ram looked a helluva lot better in side and out. Put a 30000 pound trailer on the Chevy and see how it does the ass end would be on the ground. The ram has already pulled 30000 pounds Ford and done well, I never saw the Chevy pull 30000 pounds but I bet it wouldn't be any better than ram or ford.

Congrats on convincing GM to get one to TFLT for a first run up/down the Ike Gauntlet. Nice even handed comparison of what appears to be very different trucks. In the future when you have more access to the GM products I would like to hear how comparable gas, and separately, diesel SRWs do in longer towing runs with some reference to driver comfort. As a tall person, from the waist up, I'm finding many of these newer trucks have a seat height that leaves me with a forward vision that's a bit too high even after adjusting seats. This year is a new truck year for me so I look forward to reviews of the 3/4 and 1 ton SRW trucks.

Its really not as impressive as you think. All that stops the 2500s from legally pulling 30k like the 3500 is a little sticker... It's not like the engine can't do it it's the same one in the 3500. So they are working with the same power. Why wouldnt they be equal. All the dually has on it is load stability
@rognio3
@rognio3 5 жыл бұрын
@@jasonwilliams3223 I agree with your statement except that this Chevrolet has 3.42 rear gears. Im basically positive the dually will only be available with 4.11's. that is a HUGE detail, and makes a very big difference in real world towing and acceleration
@jtugwell
@jtugwell 5 жыл бұрын
Rocky Ognio the 10 speed trans on the Chevy should wash any gearing advantage between the two i would think. Also keep in mind that in this test the GVWR would almost certainly be much more with the ram given they pulled the same trailer weight.
@rognio3
@rognio3 5 жыл бұрын
@@jtugwell I think you missed my point. The ram in the video is rated to tow double what it is towing in the video. The Chevrolet is towing it's maximum capacity. The Chevy version that tows double this weight has taller rear gears. So, it is reasonable to assume this ram would have a very difficult time towing a 30000 pound trailer in the same conditions, while the Chevrolet dually rated to tow 30000 lbs would only see a roughly 20% increase in engine load vs 50% for the ram.

I don't put much faith in anyone at TFL. The day Mr. Truck said that the 5.0 Coyote V8 was the same as the 302 V8 from way back in the 80's and 90's they lost all credibility in terms of the technical aspect of the show. Now he's saying the big truck Ram body changed in 1984. Outstanding I enjoy watching the videos for the vehicles. As a professional truck driver, I kind of know what I'm looking at in terms of the trucks capabilities based off the videos. I'm still trying to figure out what it is these two clowns are looking at in terms of their criteria for "braking down hill". It's really simple with a big truck. You turn the exhaust brake on. then if you have the cruise set, the exhaust brake comes on at about 3-4 mph above your cruise. If you touch the brakes, the exhaust brake comes on. In either case the vehicles speed should decrease. Then if the big truck is an auto shift, it will start dropping gears. With a manual you usually have the gear set for the max speed, then the exhaust brake helps, then you stab brake if necessary. Grade, load, road conditions, weather conditions all factor in as well. I have no idea what these two are expecting. The laws of physics don't change because you're driving a Ram 3500 or a Silverado 2500 HD. The exhaust brake is a tool to help you, but you may need to use braking and gear shifting. I think this is completely lost on them due to limited experience pulling trailers. The differences in the trucks weights and styles of transmissions plays a little into the mpg, barking and overall performance. But based off the owners needs, either truck would be a solid purchase. I'm a Ford guy myself, but either truck seems like it would be good for it's intended use. I'm pretty sure these trucks are designed to run at max weight performance. Not, max weight at highest mph and mpg going up a 7% grade for 8 miles. The Ram can do 35k in all conditions suspension and power wise. It's braking and mpg and max speed will suffer, but it'll pull 35k. I think this was a really good comparison to show you if you're buying a truck, what both can do. if you need to pull x amount of weight, you don't necessarily need to spend more money on a top trim level dually. They just happened to luck out. I think they're both idiots who have little concept of what they're doing. But at least Andre is a journalist with the ability to convey his message in an articulate fashion. It'll be great when he can figure out what the message is. Didn't mean to ramble on, and I should probably put this in the regualr comments. But I caught that 1984 style change and was like, wth?

If you're serious about towing heavy loads, please get a dually. It's not about the load, it's about the traction. Namely, if you're going downhill on a wet or gravel road, the trailer can and will push the truck out of the way (jackknife). Having that extra traction is really really nice for that.

Hey I have been a long time viewer of your IKE challenge. I appreciate what you guys do. One thing I would like to see come back and maybe even better implemented would be more camera time on the instrument cluster. As viewers we don't get the experience but viewing the speedo and tach we can get a go idea how well the truck is holding speed, utilizing the transmission and ultimately putting its power down. Your older IKE runs have more camera and discussion time on the performance during the hill climb. Now you guys cram a climb into a small time frame and give us an end time leaving much of the experience of the climb left out. The time of the climb is only a small piece of data from the climb and really only shows if you held the speed limit. Hopefully you can take this as purely constructive criticism. I know you guys put a lot of time into this but I feel like the down hill braking portion has taken away from the IKE climbing experience we used to get.

The fuel pump is now a Denso HP4, the fuel injectors have been improved, now has a factory lift pump, there's a new turbo and a bunch more. The LML fuel pump issue was part of my reason for trading in but I've got a few friends that pull way more than do and work their LML more than I ever have and have 4x the milage and have had zero issues so it's really unknown if you'll ever have a problem.

I don't understand why you don't use cruise going down hill, if the exhaust brake is on, the computer should apply the exhaust brake automatically as well as down shift the transmission. Hell the cruise control on my 13 year old KW will use the engine brake as long as I have it turned on. I was more surprised by how little gear hunting the Chevy did, than how well either truck pulled the hill.

I've been driving trucks for 50 years. I don't know about pickups, but I suspect they are similar(diesels at least)to big rigs. If you want to make the engine pull harder than the pedal on the floor, engage cruise control and give it a few tips to encourage it to go faster. I've spoken with lots of other drivers and they all said their rigs would pull harder with the cruise on. I'd like to test those pickups with my experience.

Hi Glenn, I apologize if I missed something obvious in your statement. But what did you mean by that?¿?. Because of the gears or because of the sizing of the trucks??? I don't know anything about gering so the numbers don't represent anything special?? Are the gears for each company about as close to each other as they can possibly be? Personally I'm impressed that either one of them could maintain that speed with that much weight and a 7% grade!!!

Yes your right, but your also forgetting 3.42 10 speed vs 6 speed 4.10 It should level the playing Field And they said they couldn’t get a dully Silverado that would probably end up having 3.73 Anyways
@trailerparkcryptoking5213
@trailerparkcryptoking5213 5 жыл бұрын
What it means is that Dmax engine is making more torque and the advertised torque numbers are off! Those 4.10 gears should way out pull those 3.42’s on that climb. Gearing = torque multiplication in the engineering world! The 10 speed trans will have a bearing because gearing is torque multiplication. The Dmax has more HP but the Cummins has more torque, but HP wins assuming you are properly geared, where the 10 speed comes in! The Dmax as a package outperforms the Cummins as a package!!! Always has no matter what any loyalist say, physics is physics!!!

Not to mention the 2500 has taller tires then the dually which equals less acceleration and deceleration . Means the chevy dually is going to stomp the ram. Just like every year they do this test

Of course if you move the position of the 5th wheel the weight in the front axle is going to change, that's why on big rigs the 5th wheel is a slider, and if by chance you're heavy on the trailer,. The axles on the trailer are also sliders. That's how we adjust our weight.
