Me and my friends in our 20s still share albums, but via spotify or apple music. Although some of us still collect CDs or Vinyl we live in completely different parts in our country so just coming over would take 3-5 hours...

In 2016, I created an "album room" fully decorated with music posters & prints (lava lamps, too!) complete with excellent new speakers, amplifier, turntable, and headphones. I started buying and re-buying vinyl albums including many covering every decade of albums that I never previously owned but have long been considered influential or important or great albums. I sit down with these vinyl albums, read the lyrics, look at who plays which instruments on each of the songs, who produced, what studio was used, and so on. I listen carefully to each instrument carefully and soak up the music! I am loving music, old & new, with a new zest which I had gotten away from in the 90s until around 2016. My reinvestment in vinyl and commitment to the music has been a real blast! I have yet to stream any music. All the music I have has been purchased! I still believe that the artists deserve to be paid for their craft. In some cases I buy the CD if the record is not solid all the way through or I'll nab a track or two off of a record on iTunes if I only like a couple of the album's tracks. I prefer the vinyl experience that I have re-created. Yeah, I do remember the days when bands played live to promote album sales. My first concert tickets prices were Harry Chapin for $9 in 1979, Elton John, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, and Styx (1980-81) for $12.50 - for the highest priced tickets! How times have changed. Albums at that time, here in Canada, were about $8.98 for a single album of $15.98 for a double like THE WALL or TUSK.

I collect all 3 formats, I love my physical music - I hate 'files' - I know people at work that go to concerts and don't own anything by them, it baffles me - they think I am a old dinosaur and need to 'get with the times'.

If the tickets are too expensive then absolutely buy the album. There will be plenty of videos of the show online soon. As long as people will pay the prices they will never go down. I love live music and will still continue to go see it. Your local musicians are the ones that need your support!

I have actually stopped myself from exploring music on spotify now and only go buy albums on cd. The difference is that I dont have too much to choose from which ends up with making me just give it all a quick listen. Now I actually get to know a album, every single bit of it, after listening throuhg it over and over. And it feels like it means more to me. I still try to broze spotify when Im on the look for a new one if I dont know something new or something old I havent given a try. It feels like it was getting a new album before streaming and I really would recomend people to try the same. Great video and topic Brendon. U guys rock🫡

I am a cd-guy, always have been, I've never streamed, don't even know how to do it, not interested, and I don't go to concerts because I cannot afford to pay 350 bucks for a ticket (that's how much my cd player cost!). Also, I can accept the fact that records sound better than cd-s but it doesn't make my listening to cd-s less enjoyable. I keep only as many cd-s (around 300) as I actively listen to and my relatively small collection makes me content. It's my modest and precious music universe... (I might be a dinosaur in that respect)

Take solace in the fact the vinyl > (lossless) digital thing is primarily personal preference rooted in objective characteristics ("wAaaaarm") of the vinyl format rather than objectively higher dynamic range, detail etc. 99.9% of modern recorded music has an all digital workflow and does *not* receive a separate, carefully considered vinyl master...it's one (often compressed to hell) master deployed for everything. It looks great on a shelf but I'll stick with my 96-24 flacs/CD rips and be fine

I only listen to albums all the way through. I just started buying physical copies of albums again. The sound quality is so much better than listening to a compressed audio file on a streaming service. I have not been to a love show in over 10 years now. But i will forever merch and CDs. To me a new album is always an event

Drives me batshit crazy with all the "anniversary" reissues with remixes, endless demos, unreleased tracks and such; if the songs were any good, the artists would have released them back then. Thanks Brendon and Anthony. 💯

Anthony was right on the money when he said around 1996 is when it became more about the singles than the albums. I feel it mainly was because of CDs. You could put that CD in your CD player and skip a song so easily that you didn't have to check out the whole album, you could just listen to the single songs off the radio that you knew. With cassette tape, or even a vinyl record, you didn't get the easy access of skipping to the next without some effort, so you would sit through the album if needed. I know I was guilty of hitting "next" or "skip" on the CD player to get to the next song when I wasn't feeling it. And because of that I missed out on a lot of great songs that I am just hearing for the first time now in 20 - 25 years with me owning those albums on vinyl record now.

I agree. Everything had to be at your fingertips. It's gotten worse with streaming, too. You can always skip to the next song... I feel it contributes to seeing music as disposable

The Spice Girls, Hanson, Jay Z, Puff Daddy, N’SYNC, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Christina aka The Disney Hell Spawn came out like cockroaches and infiltrated music and MTV was not playing new material by established bands and the Grunge movement self destructed. Nu Metal was no help. 1996 was the turning point for Rock and Roll as older bands were not getting airplay anymore. Test For Echo by Rush was all but ignored and overshadowed by New Edition reuniting?! The Gen X bands all imploded and their voices all killed themselves. Woodstock 1999 was the end of the festival for good after the Gen Xers behaved like their high priest Cobain at the end of the Smells Like Teen Spirit video and he would have been happy and applauding the chaos and anarchy and extremely left wing views that the Alternative Rock bands pushed down the throats. Those of us what I call Xennials who were born between 1976 and 1982 never quite fit in with the life sucks then you die philosophy of X and not as too over optimistic as Y is.

I’m 17 and have been getting into music for about 2 years now and it just isn’t affordable to keep up with the bands you like. I saw a few concerts this year and after that buying a cd for 17 euros for each band makes it really hard to chose what you want to support add merchandise to that and its just becoming too difficult to be a music fan thats just getting into it. If it wasn’t for second hand CDs I wouldn’t have more than 10 CDs. I think a big part of getting people interested in albums today would be getting rid of adds on streaming or making it affordable to buy the CD. I know so many people, myself included, that can’t sit through an album on spotify when you get an ad every 2 songs and that also can’t justify spending 20 euros every time they find a new band they wanna check out. The bar for getting into music is just too high for a lot of people.

The Albums have No staying Power anymore. Back in the day the Album Release was the Start of the cycle now ITS the end. Nothing Happens after that

The album is still the beginning of the cycle in the ways it generally always was...in that it's usually preceded by 1-2 singles and followed by a supporting tour, the whole time frame is usually just more compressed now and a single album isn't milked over 2+ years with highly staggered single releases the way it once was

Great point on being a mistake releasing new albums direct to stream. Concert prices are bonkers, I’ve definitely been more selective on who I go see these days. It’s a shame, because I prefer to support the band, but it seems these increases fees only support Ticketmaster and other greedy peeps.

Totally agree greed is destroying the music business. I used to love to buy stuff from the merch tables whenever I saw a band now the prices are even higher than they are online. I guess they feel they have a captive audience. Releasing a single at a time isn't the way to go either. Like Peter Gabriels last release where they released a song every full moon. By the time the whole thing was released and selling as physical media I was bored with most of it. I could rant for hours but thanks for putting your words out there.

I love those Sound Exchange Sessions! Anthony is like Rocky Balboa in Rocky 1 - underdog who will always win your heart and makes you root for him til the end of times because his so passionate and honest. Music BUSINESS is greedy and dirty and probably will never learn...first they stumbled on a Napster for more than 10 years - were totally too lazy to make a legal way to download music... and kept whining how sales are down. Now they had miracle of Vinyl - they just got so god damn greedy with prices - once again - they will miss the point. So yeah... at the end of the day I'm happy that I had that period in my life were looking for artist or album took years. And even if those times aren't never coming back - I still have memories of that feeling when you finally got that record or cd that you were looking for years :) And when the world has guys like Anthony and Brendon - I think we will survive all the music BUSINESS greediness :)

I use streaming as a tool to discover new music. It allows me to give a new release a few listens on release day and familiarize myself with the music while I'm at work. If I like it enough I'll buy the LP. I've discovered many new artists this way that I never would have checked out if I had to blindly buy a record based on one single or the album art, etc. Got burned way too many times in the 90s doing that. I'm sure I'm an outlier but there probably are a good amount of record buyers that use streaming more as a "try before you buy" rather than their defacto way of consuming music.

I personally feel the album format doesn't seem to be as important sadly, I'm a young adult and I love ALBUMS. I go out of my way and pretty much only listen to a full album or nothing. Seems that most don't care about it anymore though, my little brother is a good example... I'm slowly converting him to an album person, he at least listens to a full album now before saving the songs he likes to a big playlist. Albums being streamed on release day is terrible in my opinion, I find myself not buying new albums until after I listen to them a few times on streaming (as a vinyl kid they're just too expensive now for me to buy something I may potentially not like enough to revisit). I know in myself that if I either had to say, pay the 24.99 for a vinyl, or listen to the album a month late, I'd just buy the fucking album! Brendon's point about long waits between albums and using GnR as an example, just look at say, King Diamond / Mercyful Fate... The last Mercyful Fate album was 1997, and the last KD album was 2007... been teasing new music for almost six years on both fronts, announced material and played new stuff live, but just haven't released it in a studio OR live format in Mercyful's case. That's damn near my entire lifespan (more for Mercyful) in between new albums and it's just insane to me that they've been constantly touring but not putting out new material. There's two sides of the coin in the physical media album format definitely matters as singles are almost nonexistent, except a big artist, such as Beatles and Billy Joel. The streaming world, I believe it doesn't matter as much.

Heres a concept put CDS and LPs into stores and people will buy them. Right now only select few in walmart and your local record shop if you have one. Same with DVDS

Just as a point of fact, $4.00 in 1964 is today $39.71. I'm not saying record prices aren't outrageous but because of inflation a lot of these records really are priced appropriately. Always enjoy you guys, keep on......

Since 13 years old growing up in the 90's i've always been beguiled by the album format, listening to the whole thing and taking in the different moods and styles of songs. I rarely listen to spotify - i will always buy the album. I want the phsical format. Looking at the cover, reading the liner notes, the lyrics seeing who wrote and played what. 'The album' is my favourite thing.

The internet has kind of ruined this for the masses. People nowadays just hear a single and add it to their Spotify playlist and ignore the entire album as a whole. Only real music fans like, I assume, everyone watching this channel actually want to hear a full album.

Wow, are tickets that expensive in the US? 😮. In recent years I’ve seen Weezer, guns and roses, ac dc, and smashing pumpkins and I don’t remember paying over £70 (around $90-100). Pearl jam struggled to fill an arena and halved tickets to about £40! Love the chat between you guys. Apologies i watch most of these discussion vids but am dreadful at commenting! Yes concert ticket pricing here in the US is astronomical. Doesn’t mean you can’t get a seat in the nosebleeds for $100, but if you want a decent seat you will pay for it.

I’m pretty much retired now. Only going to Metallica because I’m a fan, I’ve never seen them before after being a fan since hearing Master of Puppets in December 1987 as an 11 year old and love the band and some albums I love more than others but I want to see them and also the tickets dropped to $60 which is reasonable. Plus I have the new album and I enjoy it. Plus the Load and Reload and St Anger albums are pretty much a memory now.

When will these record labels learn, Who do they think saved their music media business, it wasn't Wal-Mart, Target, Barnes and Nobles, It was the Mom & Pops (independent) record shops that got this media frenzy of collecting Physical media going again !!! Sad to say greed will take them out again...Hope theses labels wake up before it's too late. I love the tactile nature of physical media. It's just how I am. It makes me feel more connected to the music. My preference is vinyl because I feel much more committed to playing more content (like cassettes, which I love too). It's a personal thing.

Well it’s a lot of different things. It doesn’t matter much to the hit makers of the day unless it’s a Taylor swift like phenom or Rodrigo or a Sabrina Carpenter type but I hear these top ten songs of streaming that Rick Beato does and I can see why no one would care for an album now. For older artists it sucks for them because it really gets lost in their catalog now, I mean the new Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz the last two Styx albums etc top notch stuff but they can’t get radio play and even a fan uses it as a chance to go to the bathroom so I can see them even wondering who am I recording this great new music for , John mellencamp once said in the 90s “I just gave you my best album now do something with it label”. Even rock bands like Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters I mean the records debut high because of loyals but there is almost no play and shelf life to their new albums. As far as pricing I agree 100% I recently got a vinyl copy signed by an indie NY based artist Blu-Detiger and its 30 bucks on her site and its color etc… so why can she handle a lower price and not major artists also the band Pretty Reckless when their last album came out in variants all were 25-30 bucks so I don’t see why Taylor has to be 50 in mass production. As for ticket pricing I’m not paying that amount for anyone especially to be in a large venue I did that once for Prince way back in 1997 I paid 300 dollars from a broker but it was for second row because I’m not paying tons of money and not being in the front. Taylor ticket prices are insane and I love Oliva Rodrigo but for that money her and I better be going out on a date too. Since things have reopened after Covid shut downs I have been to over 100 shows average ticket price has been 25 bucks most I spent was 90 dollars for a-ha at radio city basically because they are my favorite band (though most only know one song, they have 11 albums) and also they really even do shows in America

The issue is in this Tik tak social media world, albums have to be 3 minutes long, kids don’t have time to listen to a whole album. I have noticed more n more tribute cover bands playing smaller venues in my area like Fleetwood Macked. Simply Queen, Turn to Stone, The Doors Experience, George Michael experience, Dreamer The Super Tramp Experience, yea they are not the real artist but ticket prices are next to nothing compared to seeing a real act. Some of these tribute bands are not bad.

Yes the album format matters to me. In my opinion, ANd don't get me wrong I enjoy CD;s and even cassettes, but LP's are the most fun. You get a great big large cover and back and liner notes that you can read. CD's, you can't read the liner notes and there is no fun in a CD, you can't watch it spin

I was a song and single only type person until Oasis' Definitely Maybe in 1994. Since then I've been an album person. I try to encourage people to listen to albums. A always appreciate bands that still use the album as an art form rather than just a collection of random songs. I point to The Lottery Winners' Anxiety Replacement Therapy. It's no coincidence it spells ART. They get it. Also it feels like their tours are there to promote the albums like the old days. I appreciate all bands that still see albums as important

Yes, I wish that new cars still had cd players in them. From what I understand some do, but Pete Pardo explained on his channel that his Honda Pilot won’t even allow him to get a new cd player to be installed because it doesn’t work with the Bose sound system.

I'm in a band now and we had this talk..should we just release single songs, or do we release a full record. Many small labels won't even deal with with physical product now....but since everyone in the bad is record collectors we are set on a record ( vinyl and cd) And even though many won't listen like it is, we still placed the songs in order for a Side A and Side B.... it's strange how the music industry has changed.

I've never really enjoyed ordering anything. If I buy anything at all it's going to be from a store like sound exchange or whatever is available where I live. I would rather have the experience and I haven't seen too much come out in a while that I even thought was good enough to buy and I just can't buy it just to have it especially if I'm probably never even going to listen to it

Although an Artist may not literally set the price of tickets, the fee they want will affect the ticket prices. A small scale example I read about a while back but I can't remember the Artist involved. They were appearing at this relatively small venue. Ticket prices were announced and people complained it was too much. The Artist took it upon themselves to say publicly they were charging too much. Turns out the venue had to charge that price just to break even based on the number of tickets available and what they were having to pay the Artist. The whole thing ended up being cancelled.

You know how many albums come out every week, so expecting a record to maintain everyone's attention as that flood of music never stops is impossible. That leads to the focus on the first week sales, and in order to get people to pre-order or go to the store on release day, we need to have some idea of what the record sounds like. There's no chance I would buy an album anymore without hearing at least three songs, if not the whole thing. I'm sure there are bands I would love that I completely forgot about, because when I heard about them there wasn't a song available to hear. I love CDs, but they're a luxury in this ecosystem. I haven't given up on albums, because when I'm in the mood to hear 'that sound', I need more than five or ten minutes of it.

Here in Europe, Pearl Jam canceled several concerts under its own name (many of them a day or two away from happening) with the excuse of one of the members' illness. Festival concerts have not been cancelled. Reportedly, the real reason is that tickets are not selling because they are too expensive.

And CDs and albums are so expensive because it's just like anything else why sell 5 for $10 to make 50 bucks but I can sell one for $50 and make the same amount of money. Streaming has ruined the whole spirit of music. I am old school. I like a physical cd or vinyl in my hands. Of course music today really isn't worth a shit. It's horrible. I feel lucky to have grown up during the 70s and 80s when real music existed and people didn't bring cell phones to shows. Way different times we live in. I treasure those older days. Things were alot simpler and better.

Well one must ask to whom and to what ends .., to me it certainly does , to the longevity of continued decent music I think it would .., otherwise it all becomes the single and it all becomes about consuming things as quick as possible and then disposable . An album invites a listener in , into a journey , you must at least have 35 minutes of your attention . On my MP3 I do not have singles , I have only albums loaded , and I will listen to only an album .., my home collection is all vinyl , some CD's , some tapes .., I never skip songs , somewhere along the line we threw the baby out with the bath water , and yes likely because it became easier to skip songs with the CD format .., we always had the single , ie the 45's .., and now with the internet and streaming , seems like most casual listeners are only after that one last catchy thing they heard , they do not care if there is a whole album , they just want that one song , and a week later they hear likely another catchy 3 minute jingle , and so on and on , but these folks miss out on the beauty and craft of a whole album that is well done :( .., and sadly why would an artist independent or otherwise invest the time and effort then in releasing an album , it is a dark rabbit hole ..,

I buy records on eBay usuallni have bought from Wal marts there's reissues on vinyl on eBay new reisssued pressed in Germany free shipping there one year i got the residue of the police aaa1980 album 15.00and back in black at best buy for 20.00 Everytime i saw them at record stores or shows were in so so shape got winthers greatest hits which was new after he passed was on 18.00 on eBay new couldn't find here but i agree with you on greed instead of video star should call it greed killed the rock stars

There is nothing wrong with downloading/streaming music but that shouldn’t be the only way to consume music. We’re never going to turn the clock back on streaming and there are a lot of benefits to it for both fans and artists, but there is also still something very important about the physical full length album. The key is to find the right balance and if everyone did this then the music industry would be in a better place.

We talked about this…not every new CD is $10. In fact very few are $10 anymore. Lots of new CDs are $15 and up. So at $8 used they are half the cost.

There is no need for tickets to cost $xxx. Take TOOL for example. Don't tell me they need the money. Does the group decide the money? I bet they don't even know the ticket cost. Back in the day as a kid I brought my own tickets. My parents never paid (except to let me use their credit card for the initial phone order). Had to deliver a lot of papers to go see a concert. Sorry but Ebay is great because the postage is listed before you even bid/buy now.

I mean I guess it really depends how we define matters. To a commercial extent less than ever, but in the sense of something a not insignificant amount of people will always appreciate and gravitate to, absolutely. But that said I've long expected a paradigm shift toward far more quarterly EPs and/or constant stream of monthly singles and one-offs in lieu of the traditional album template

I feel bands touring has ruined alblum format. Covid was best thing happen for bands. It forced bands get creative not rush out half ass alblum with 3 singles they just make there money off 300-500 dollar concert tickets. Bands got lazy. I kid u not call me insane the best prog rock alblums and music albums in jazz and hard rock. We’re made in 2020-2022 then last 50 years in music combined imho. Bands could not tour it needs happen again no touring allowed and force bands spend time making good alblum again people hated Covid I loved it we got better music from it.
