Does the Bible teach about purgatory?

The Latin word purgatory means “to purge or make clean”, and the Catholic Church teaches that people go to Purgatory to be purified or purged from sin. This is what the Catholic Encyclopedia has to say about the purpose of purgatory.
Purgatory is a place of punishment and purification for sins that have not been completely paid for. This means our Messiah was not able to completely atone for our sins, and we need to serve time in Purgatory to pay off the debt we still owe. This unbiblical doctrine renders the sacrifice of Yeshua meaningless since we must work off our own debt in the underworld.
The Catholic doctrine of purgatory stands in opposition to the Biblical teachings about salvation, forgiveness, death, and resurrection, and it was one of the main things the Protestant reformers sought to eradicate from the church. There is absolutely no Scriptural support for the doctrine of purgatory, and Protestants are right to oppose this unbiblical heresy.

I read where St. Claude deColumbiere, who was St. Margaret Mary's confessor, had to pass through the fires. The souls in Purgatory can hear ourvprsyers just like the souls in Heaven can.

It is confusing but Catholics believe Jesus died for our sins so that we CAN go to Heaven. Before Jesus died we could not go to Heaven but simply just died (went to hell?). I always wondered about sins and atonement as if we don't have to worry and can be very bad and murder people and it doesn't matter because Jesus died for our sins so we can do whatever we like ... makes you wonder. Purgatory is to purify the sins we have that we did despite all that Jesus did for us because we do some pretty awful things on earth. Understanding the Catholic notion of purgatory requires knowing the difference between a temporal consequence and an eternal consequence; this difference has nothing to do with damnation and salvation. Some people reject the idea of purgatory because they misunderstand its purpose. Jesus, by His life death and resurrection, saved us from our sins. Jesus saved us from eternal damnation. The difference is between a temporal consequence and an eternal consequence which means even though I am forgiven that my soul has the stain of sin and that keeps my soul from moving closer to God. Think about it this way .. you forgive someone for what they did but you don't forget what they did and sometimes it still affects how you react to them. Well, that is probably a terrible example but the best I could think of off the top of my head. It is not about God but about our own ability to forgive ourselves and how we hold onto things. That is how I understand it anyway. I am still figuring out things but for me what I do is pray pray pray and put my trust in God. Even if some of the things in the new Catholic Church (much different than the old Catholic Chuch) don't seem right, I just pray to God and do my own thing that I am led to do. Most Catholic Churches today in North America are very new age Catholic and do not give respect to God as deserved and really just go through the motions. Most Catholics don't even know about Purgatory and think Purgatory is hell anyway. Most Catholics don't even know as much about the Catholic religion as many Protestants do who pick it apart. However, old Catholic says unless you are part of the true Church you are not saved and that always seemed untrue to me as I know Jesus died for ALL of us. So even though I am Catholic I put my faith in God to lead me as I know there is a lot of corruption today especially in the Vatican. I am Catholic and all I ask is that you Pray for us that we are not deceived by the devil and his minions in these times. The prophet Daniel wrote I looked at the Throne of God and the Body of God was a firestorm with lighting and thunder and a river of fire flowed from the throne of God. I will tell you one more time . Big mistake in your video statement. The Catechism does not state that there are sins not paid for in purgatory. All sin was once and for all paid for by Jesus on the cross. However, we still continue to sin our whole life even though every last one of them will ultimately be paid for.

I was reading in Daniel 12:13 "for you shall rest, and will arise to your inheritance st the end of the days" - and that made me wonder about a waiting period between death and the second coming, before entering heaven? The Protestant bible today has 7 less Old Testament books than the Catholic Bible, these books were taken away by Martin Luther During the Reformation.( which is a terrible sin to add to or take away from the Bible). Within the books he removed were 1 and 2 Maccabees which clearly references how it is ‘holy and keeping in good faith’ to pray for the dead, ‘so that the dead might be pardoned for their sin’. Praying for the dead would be pointless unless Purgatory exists, which it does. The Catholic Church that Jesus Christ founded in 33 AD and continued to prosper for thousands of years was corrupted by men such as Martin Luther, John Calvin etc. who began teaching their own false doctrines, if other Christian denominations paid attention to what the history of the Catholic Church you would understand why we should believe in purgatory. 🙏🏼

Great video... Purgatory would help explain a lot of our guilt as Christians who don't feel worthy of the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross. I myself have trouble reconciling a lot of the dialogue in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament when it speaks about the transgression of sin and being righteous... if one accepts Jesus as their savior, becomes a Christian, and still struggles with a particular sin, are they still going to heaven regardless?

Apoc. 21:27 The message here being that the souls of people who repented of their sins, but have still not paid that "Last Farthing" to satisfy God's judgement are sent to a place where their souls are scrubbed clean so that they may enter heaven. Look at Heb. 12:23 again. The spirits of those just men are made perfect not on earth, since their bodies are dead. And again from the scriptures: "It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins." God allows people on earth to ask Him to accept their "Farthings" (prayers) in helping pay that debt to release the souls of the just not yet made perfect, to perfect those souls, and allow them into heaven.

Purgatory absolutely is in the Bible, but the reason you Protestants can't see it is because you don't want to see it. In the first place, Jesus never wrote a Bible, nor did He ever command that a Bible be written by any of his Disciples. No, but instead, He gave us His Church to teach us His Wisdom, and the Bible tells us that THE Church is the Pillar and Ground of THE Truth. Just check the historical facts in the Encyclopedia Britannica or just ask Siri or Alexa. Facts are facts. When you deny the facts then you deny the Truth. St. Paul was a Bishop of the Catholic Church and as a Bishop he wrote many letters, some of which the Church included in the Bible. This is what he warned about in 2 Tm. 4:3 *For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths...... 6......the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day* .........." There are many things that can be learned from what St. Paul said in those few verses, but I just want to bring your attention to what is important to this discussion. 2000 years ago, God gave us the Catholic Church to teach us and to save us. Purgatory is never mentioned in the Bible and is a term made up by Catholicism! The Bible is very clear that when you die you are in the presents of the Lord. The perfect example of this is the thief on the cross. Luke 23-43 "Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Of cause in this case this thief was saved from Hell as he believed in Jesus being the son of God at the last moment of his life. Clearly there are many verses that tell us of the moment we die you will in the presents of the Lord. The Apostle Paul indicates this. The phrase “absent from the body” is found in 2 Corinthians 5:6-8. Paul states that he is confident in his eternal destiny and longs for the day when he can be “absent from the body” and be present with the Lord he loves and serves. To be “absent” from one’s body simply means to die because, at death, the spirit is separated from the body and moves into its eternal abode-either heaven with the Lord or hell, separated from God for eternity. Do not believe this false and misleading doctrine of the Catholic church it will only bring you despair and disillusion to your eternal salvation. Your sins have been paid for in full by the perfect sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, John 19:30. The bible was never intended to be the only word of God. Jesus never said anything about a bible or what books should be in the bible. The word of God is living and doesn't contradict the bible. The church leaders wanted to give us a final biblical canon 400 years later. Athanasius of Alexander in his Easter letter of 367 listed the 27 books and Pope Damasus announced the same 27 books in the 382 Council of Rome. It makes logical sense there is some sort of a state of cleansing before heaven.

yes, those are references to a post mortem purification of the soul. I guess for lack of a better word we might call it a Final Cleansing or a Purifying Fire or a Completion of Sanctification. But its definitely not Purgatory. :-)

Check out Acts 11:26 "And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch" - the early Christian church did not have the traditions of the catholic church. The catholic church was just the first to establish religious rituals associated with the teachings of Jesus. Jesus himself did not establish the Catholic church, religious customs did. @@jesussaves6510Purgatory would be the purging of Sins, I suppose one would still have consciousness in the afterlife and still be able to "feel" repentance after being presented Proof of a God, so then some souls will spend time in purgatory before entering Eternity/Heaven. I feel like this would be the most merciful way for all souls to reach heaven. This is my idea, I'm not sure exactly what the Catholic Catechism says, but it all comes down to mercy. It would be similar to a criminal who has committed a crime, and after being apprehended and shown he was wrong, the criminal still feels no remorse even after being shown he was wrong. in the same manner, some people will ultimately reject God in the afterlife as well.

I've also learned that people that practice sorcery use mind altering drugs to alter their senses and enable them to cast spells, speak to spirits and the like.
