This seam looking this badly is for a few reasons: The installer has not been trained properly on how to operate the Kool glide, he had the iron on medium or high setting and seamed directly over padding. The tool is intended to be used with a seaming board made by traxx, so that it doesn’t singe the padding and gives you something hard to roll your seam on. If you’re going to seam over padding it definitely has to be on low. With the seam board, the iron should be on medium. Also, once you activate the iron, if you overlap where you already hit it with the Kool glide as you move down the seam, it will burn the tape and possibly the backing. His seam should be sealed with thermoplastic from a glue gun which will activate and create a bond when the tape is activated underneath it. As far as getting ends of seams properly it can be tricky but Once the seam is cool I’ll dog-ear the end and activate it with the iron one more time just to make sure it’s completely together I use the Kool glide every day, for all types of carpet, all types of seams and I love it!

probably where they zap it twice or use M or H setting. The ends are not as glued cause they probably did not use T tool good enough which its kinda tricky getting corners. The seam tape burns on the padding i'm thinking they use non silicone backing on the seam tape so it sticks to the pad.

Like a lot of guys on here are saying, it’s great for patches and that’s about the extent. If used correctly it will still burn a good looking seam, especially on higher end carpets or berbers. I’ve owned one for a couple years now but still prefer my hot iron for almost all applications.

In my experience its actually really good for high class carpet or repairs imo. Because when ever the seam is bad you can easily detach the seam without damaging the seam and you can go back to fix the seam while seaming ( for pattern match or a leaving a gap) if it was an hot iron you'll have to almost start all over and the carpet will have glue all over it. Also you can seam better the edges of the seam better than th iron by changing the direction of the glide. It's really good but still pricey I'd recommend for installer that does residential houses with pattern matches carpet.

I have came across maybe 5-10 jobs to do seam repairs where every seam in the house was ruined and coming apart using this Kool glide tape. That's why I have a huge problem with this over priced tool. You would get better results with a home steam iron and a Terry towel. But I never had a chance to actually see the backing and test it like this. Shocking but great video.

Apparently the kool glide is new to them also Uncoated seam tape. Coated seam tape is my preference Didn’t use a seam board (burnt tape pad and carpet) also a recommended tool to be used with the kool glide seam SYSTEM Probably to high temp I hated the transition from hot iron to kool glide. Works great for Berber and pattern match But after years of using the kool glide. It’s a fantastic tool.

Also kool glide has a video that shows the proper way to use their seam system! With a seam board It’s like socks go with shoes The seam board is an important part of the seam system
@gjakesdad19836 жыл бұрын
I’ve been using the Kool Glide for a few years now. The person who put that seam together didn’t use a guide, seam board, proper setting, sealer and most importantly didn’t pay attention to the guide arrows. This would of prevented all the issues you spoke about, so they clearly didn’t read the instructions cover to cover. Take the time to study the tool and you’ll learn to love it.

And the reason why his tape is buckled like that is because he did not stretch the tape as he was putting together the carpet. And I doubt that he even seemed sealed it at all. Stretching the tape and seam sealing it with the approved glue is very helpful to avoid anything like this and also doesn't look like that he used a weight because not using a weight will make the carpet tape like that

So I've been using the cool glide for 6 years now. I have been learning flooring for 17 years now. Use this tool not for high piled carpet!! You don't need to!! Why!?? Only use cool guide for pattern carpets. Because..... You can stop and start an adjust. With ease. Fixing skewing is very easy. It doesn't seem to work very well on High pile carpets. But who needs to use that system when you have a very good system of hot iron. Heat-sensitive patterned carpet is where it's at in this product. And also works very well with seam sealing applications. Good luck guys!

I run a Kool glide daily and whoever made that seam had the iron slightly off center That’s why it wasn’t melted on that one side and probably had the setting to high for that carpet.

I've used one. I used it to repair a seam in a movie theatre, not a seam i did just got talked into fixing it. I never looked at the back to see if i crispy fried it, hmmm?. This is my first time seeing that too. I never see it when I do tear outs either doesn't seem like anyone uses them here either. I see the irons for sale collecting dust at the supply store around $500 i believe. I do know they say if you had overlap or a gap your soposed to be able to heat it up again in that spot and redo it from topside that'd be nice. I don't trust it on a regular seam. For patches it would make life easier. The tape new on the roll is sticky to the touch like scotch tape. That's where I thought "this isn't going to hold like regular seam tape". Sticking to the old school. FBSB 4 LIFE. I want a FBSB shirt man!

I use the cool glide for all my repairs and I love it for that. I wouldn’t use it for seams over the size of a doorway or so. Based on the overall look of the tape I would think inexperience is at fault here. Because of the micro waves it does have a tendency to burn but using properly with proper technique will minimize this.

Several commenters are spot on. Its relatively new technology. It's been out about 15 years. It does work and works well when used properly. Just like the traditional iron that sits to long, it will burn. This happens for a couple of reasons: They had it on a setting too high for that thickness of carpet, they overlapped previously heated area when they moved to the next section down the seam (most common). It's not a grab and go tool. You have to read up on it and follow directions. I'm sure Southernboys will like this when they try one. While one must know how to use it, it is very user friendly for those that understand it. It takes the guess work or the feel of when to proceed down the seam out of the process as indicators tell the user when to move forward. this makes for easy training of installers that are just learning to seam. rolling the seam is still important and plays a part in adhesion. skips in heated area is very common for new users. They move forward and forget to cycle. BTW, not part of Koolglide here, just a user and a trainer. It works when used properly. Southernboys is right to question what he sees there, but that gets the conversations going. Great post!

@kevinwilkerson97655 жыл бұрын
Well it was a good video with some good questions to it. After watching and seeing what happened from the back side is definitely not a well constructed seam even though you couldn't see the seam from the top but it was eventually at some point going to come apart. What's happened is the seam was on med or hi setting. It should be on low unless cold conditions of floor. The seam has wrinkles because it had no weight behind it while seam is hot. It needs a seamerdown machine behind the iron to suck up the tape into backing and immediately cool the seam. Now the biggest problem here is no seam sealer on edge. All carpet seams need sealed. Hope this helps.

Kevin Wilkerson Thank you for that load of information I really do appreciate it, maybe one of these days I will switch to a cool glide, we will just have to see what the future holds
@toddabrams32606 жыл бұрын
That just wasn't used properly. It will burn if it is not on the right setting or if you are not completely lined up on the tape. I use mine for patching and it works great. I agree with some of the other comments about the price and being CFI certified it would not be cost effective for daily installation. Still a great tool if used properly and especially great for patching.

I've have, and have used the Kool glide iron since the day it came out. I've had 4 of them and absolutely love it to death. I own 5 of the old school irons and I've only used it maybe a hand full of times in the last year only on cheap carpet. I do a ton of higher end and pattern carpet and the Kool glide is the only way to go. It looks like whoever did that seam didn't know what they were doing at all and the iron could of possibly had something going on with it. The Kool glide tape does cost more but the iron makes better seams and is much quicker than the old one. On higher end carpets the warranties would be void unless you used a Kool glide or a 6" iron. Don't get discouraged by what your seeing there on that seam because that is alot of installer error and possibly a malfunctioning Kool glide iron.

Sorry about replying after 11 months but I just now for the first time saw your video. I have a lot of experience with this iron. Two things first person had it on the wrong setting, and second he didn’t have it centered on the tape and that’s what caused that. I’ve been using the cool glide for many years now and my old trusty orcon is sitting on the shelf. The Kool-Aid actually comes with a device that center is the tape for you and holds it in place so it makes it easier to make certain you’re centered. If you do it correctly it’s just as good as any other iron out there. I was very unsure when I first got it, but the first time I used it to do a door jam I was sold because it makes it so much easier to do patches and jams.
