You can connect to the Free Wifi with your phone and then turn on your moble hotspot to use the Free Wifi. It will route it through your phone which has a browser. I don't know if iPhone does this but Android does

Mileage will vary on public wifi or LTE. That would be true for any gaming streaming device. Only major issue with Portal is the browser thing they need to solve.

There is a work around using a laptop and changing the MAC address. I believe there are some videos out there to help. However this is not convenient whatsoever

@@Trillkev1 ideal if you have your Ps5 connected directly with lan wire to router or lan wire to range extender. Ps5 must be in rest mode and you need to turn on settings to turn on via WiFi, etc and make sure to turn off the sync with tv (setting where if you turn on your Ps5, you also turn on your tv) so that you don't have to worry about tv being on when you're away. I play my Ps5 when I'm in a different town on a different WiFi network and it works great. Not good for competitive twitch shooters like cod but good for single player games and RPGs, etc

I really liked the device. I received it the day before the release into mass sales. At home it connects and works well, but we were never able to connect remotely from my friends house. Although all settings were correctly installed on both ps5 and PS portal, stable internet is 600mb. I don’t know what this is connected with, but I couldn’t connect. Thanks for video

You’re right Marlon in that games installed NATIVE on a handheld will always be the best compared to cloud streaming/ remote play. Here on the channel is a big focus on the ROG Ally PC handheld and this is an INCREDIBLE device!

If you really want to connect to a crappy public wifi, there is still a way if you have a laptop with you. Just change your laptop's mac address to match your portals mac, then authenticate using your laptop. Next connect your portal. But public wifi is really not recommended.

This is exactly the test that I wanted to see. I’m gonna hold off on this device for now and stick to just using an ipad pro for remote play. The fact that it doesn’t even have a basic web browser to handle public wifi setup throws me off. Which means the portal won’t be able to connect even to high speed hotel wifi that requires logging in. 😢

I live in texas where my PS5 resides and am on vacation at my wife’s family’s house in MA. Even on great wifi, the portal will not stay connected. Hope this gets fixed, however it seems this devise was really designed to be a second screen for home use.

The only problem this device seems to solve is if the TV your PS5 is designated to at home is in use by someone else. The solution to this isn't a $200 handheld device - simply unplug your console and take it to another room with a TV. Clearly playing it on the go is completely uncertain, even more so if you're going to try to use a hotspot. Hard pass.

A travel is what you need. Connect the travel to the public WiFi then sign in to the capture portal. Then connect the portal to the travel router

While many of the other stupid decisions Sony made with this device can be written off to corporate greed (like the lack of bluetooth connection, requiring you to exclusively use Sony's wireless earbuds)....why on earth would they disallow you to use it on public wifi networks that want you to sign in? The only problem this device solves for me would be getting to play while camping, out on my boat, or while on down time at work. IE, I need it to work via a MOBILE HOTSPOT through my Samsung Galaxy. Every indicator I've seen shows that this feature is barely functional at present. That's too bad, if this wasn't an issue I would have bought one long ago.

Mobile hotspot can be hit/miss. Works with some carriers, & doesn’t with others. Works with mine, but the gameplay can get very choppy/laggy.

@@nwing07__ All you'll be doing is copying your routers WiFi access details, the same details you entered when you 1st setup the portal Search your mobiles settings for hotspot name or tethering - then edit your phone's hotspot name / password to match if you still can't connect your personal hotspot, it's likely an issue with your mobile networks "NAT type". Look it up

Dude - connect to the Nandos WiFi on your phone and then hotspot it to the portal. Much clearer and faster connection.

Most phones won't let you hot spot on WiFi. You are usually using hot spot because WiFi is not available.

I know my iphone-owning friends don't have it as an option. As an incidental aside, my Portal is actually clearer and faster when I'm hotspotting my phone from a Starbucks wifi than on my own home network... I suspect that says more about my rubbish home network though 😅

Hi one question if i m not using ps5 and want to use ps5 portable will i be able to play my ps5 games with just my wifi on...no need to be in front of ps5 just want to know whether it could work anywhere where we have an internet connection or cellular connectivity. Please clear my doubt i m dying to buy this ps5 portable but still have some doubts though...thanks i am from india and having a gaming channel.

If I haven't carry my ps5 along still I could enjoy games. Just want to confirm that before buying...also what you suggest it's really worth having ps5 portable too. Ps5 portable need only internet connectivity correct whether it's wifi or cellular hardly matters

Hi, yes you can play your ps5 console when you're at your uncles on a different WiFi... have to say that it's very dependent on how strong the WiFi signals are... would I recommend the Portal? Personally I'd get a new pc handheld called the ROG Ally X which does PS5 remote play but also much more - check out my recent vids on the channel to find out more...

Hey Chris, in theory it SHOULD turn PS5 on when console is in rest mode, but as you can see from the vid the Portal is pretty temperamental… 🤷
