I will say this, every Wednesday evening I gather with a few of my buddies to shoot bowling pins. If you’ve never shot a pin before, they are extremely hard to knock over with a handgun from 10 yds. I ran some Winchester active duty flat nose 115 grains that are +p+ rated at over 1330 fps! There was no question the flat nose round absolutely 1000% hit harder than other round ball rounds. Good stuff as always on this channel.

I use flat nose handgun ammo for hunting, because it penetrates deeper. I have my own range with all the equipment. When I test penetration, a flat nose bullet doesn't wabble back and forth as much as a round nose bullet, it keeps stabilizing itself off the flat nose. A round nose wabbles back and forth, actually making a little wider wound channel and causing it to slow down faster and penetrate less. I hope this of help. Have a great day people!!

I use Flat Nose .380 in my EDC .LCP Max. Most Defense rounds don't mushroom in the short barrel. What is interesting is that through the many gel tests that I have watched from different You Tube Posters, the results vary a lot. Talking about flat nose .380 only, I see videos where the rounds only penetrate about 12". Other videos show the flat nose rounds exiting both blocks. I know that there are a lot of variables when testing with ballistic gel, but in the end, I will take over penetration over under penetration. Thank you for your testing. Your results help me to feel good about using flat nose .380 ammo in my LCP Max, for EDC.

The penetration and bone breaking ability of the Flat Nose Round Point projectile has been long studied and developed for over 100yrs. There is a reason that Elmer Keith chose the flat nose round point as his final design after shooting thousands upon thousands of rounds over decades. He blew up 2 guns and developed the 44cal so well he got Smith to finally build a stronger pistol and more powerful round as the 44 mag. His bullet molds are still prized today as the best 44 mag hunting round FNRP bullets.

I think what is happening is that the round nose bullet is tail heavy and the flat point has a better center of gravity (so it's more balanced). When the bullet hits and slows down the tail end tries to swing around. An interesting test is to shoot through say a foot of jelly and chrono the bullet both before and after the block. This will show you the energy transfer. I think your range radar would let you do it in one shot. Good luck on it and as always you a great show. I always learn a lot from you.

At 5:32 you can see all 3 of the Ammo Inc FMJ tracks are almost identical through the first gel block. That gives us usable information that a minimum of 16 inches of penetration plus a fairly normal FMJ wound track can be expected. A good predictable FMJ round.

Aside from penetration and what happens down range, I have noticed a difference personally even before the weapon fires between the two types of cartridges. (bullet shapes) I have a Smith & Wesson .380 M&P Bodyguard and the flat nose bullet chambers flawlessly compared to the round nosed bullet. As the cartridge moves forward into the barrel, the round nosed bullet (as it hits the feed ramp on the chamber) doesn't chamber properly resulting in a jam. However, the flat nosed bullet (cartridge) chambers every time. My findings are of my own weapon and ammunition that I have used. These findings do not necessarily reflect what other people with the same pistol will encounter. All I can say is I made the change to flat nosed bullets and I haven't had any issues whatsoever. At the end of the day when I pull the trigger, the pistol works!

@@ArizonaGunsDave , Just my advice (you may already know but..) fire that gun for 400 to 500 rounds before you conclude it's an ammo issue. I Bought a brand new G3c and the first 50 rounds were a nightmare of jams. I switched ammo and kept firing it for the next few days up to 500+ rounds and now the gun will run on any ammo. The issue (I discovered in this case) was the fact that Taurus saves money in one way by not spending much time on "finishing" the sharp edges and burrs. After running the gun for 500 rounds, the sharp edges and burrs on the feed ramp and chamber became slightly polished enough to eliminate the problems. Break in periods are a must, especially on these "buget" guns.

The .380 is barely fast enough to expand hollow points, so you just don't see a huge difference in wound channels when comparing flat nose to round nose. I think the only reason people ask for multiple shots is to show consistency. If your shooting hollow points and only 40% open then that might not be the best ammo for self defense. And if you only shot once you won't really be able to tell how consistent a round is . I did some research and may have an answer on why the flat nose bullets penetrated deeper than the round nose. It's called supercavitation, in which the flat of the bullet creates a bubble of water vapor at its nose in which it passes through. While the round nose bullet doesn't create as much of a bubble of water vapor, so there is more drag along the side of the bullet. The information I found was from posts between African big game hunters. There is a lot of misinformation out there that say the round nose penetrates deeper...but that gun...those bullets...jelly proved them wrong.

My best guess is the flat nose bullet is pushing a tiny pocket of air, just enough to disrupt the gel ahead and enable the bullet to follow a larger temporary bubble. The round nose is needing to push its way though the gel. A comparison of 9mm Federal Syntech in 115 gr Range FMJ RN, vs Syntech 150 gr Action Pistol FMJ FN might be interesting. Not identical weights, but I'm curious since I shoot both.

The Federal Syntech is a bit cheaper than some FMJ RN here. The 150 gr Action Pistol round is softer shooting than the 115 gr Range version. Nice for practice using a micro 9mm like my Shield Plus.

i can't deny what i just saw with my own eyes, but thought the results would be the opposite. i thought that since the flat nose appeared to have more wind resistance, it wouldnt go as far as the round nose. thos test kinda defies the laws of physics. in 90% of the 380 vs 9mm penetration tests i have seen the 9mm wins easily, so there is certainly something going on here.

@@ToolsandTargets i wanna see it too. some years back i was doing a test on , i think it was half inch boards. the gun was a hi point c9. i musta had 5 dfferent kinds if 115 gr fmj, and one kind of 115 gr flat points. every one of the round nose went deeper into the wood than the flat tip. because of the slightly larger wound channel of the flat tip one could argue it could be a viable alternative for those of us that arent hollow point crazy, but if the flat tip consistently penetrates farther, its kind of a moot point.

After this test I feel that the shape may help only a tiny amount. So, when I think about the 22 Punch we can count out the flat nose as the #1 reason for the extra penetration. Therefore we know the flat nose and. 22 caliber size is consistent and the lighter weight 29 grain vs 36 or 40 doesn't help when compared to the same speed (fps). More mass should equal more penetration for identical fps. That makes me think the coating and/or the shorter 29 grain bullet has less total friction. Interesting. I'm the guy who stays up at night wondering why airplanes aren't coated with Teflon.😁

Just a suggestion…couldn't you put the chrono in front of the gel blocks? Then you would get the velocity, and the bullet expansion in the same shot. Saves ammo and time.
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets 3 жыл бұрын
The only problem with that is I normally only take one shot with each round through the gel and I want to get at least a 2 shot average from the chrono. So I would still have to take a chrono shot outside of the gel to get at least a two shot average. The time it takes to move stuff around is worth wasting the extra round for me.

Yes, flatnose rounds will do alot of damage in a body. Like I suggested awhile back you should put some rib or dog bone inthe gel blocks to see how they really open up. And a steel plate to stop the round to recover the ammo to see if the round opened up. I did it and you will be amazed. Good Luck.
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets 3 жыл бұрын
I really haven't had any issue recovering rounds. None of them ever penetrate through both blocks. Only the ones that yaw and go out the side from time to time. Hollow points are always caught in the gel. I mentioned before I'm not ever putting bone in the gel because it's literally impossible to filter this clear gel due to the way it instantly solidifies if you pour it. I may do some external "barriers" but bare gel serves my purpose for the most part. Appreciate you checking it out.👍

The best way might be to shoot a live 200 pound hog. "The best is the enemy of the good." One source I had said 147 ft/lbs in a hit will break a bone. Both of these are 828 or above at 100 grains to produce 152 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. I doubt expansion is a determining factor. The fatal factors are placement and penetration. Most defense shots and assassinations are within six feet and rarely out to seven yards. The Arch Duke Ferdinand was killed with a .380 with one hit in the neck and that started WW1. A .380 killed Mahatma Gandi with three shots within four inches of his belly button. . Yitzhak Rabin, Prime Minister of Israel died wtih a hit in the chest and one hit in the abdomen.

@@ToolsandTargets I have no choice for a range yet; so I am delayed. I over-plan to prevent waste. If I used a barrier it would be far enough way for debris not to penetrate the gel. Maybe medium density fiber board wrapped in denim a foot away. I got "Flarp" as a "non-neutonian" medium to test. It is all a matter of testing one round against another in the same medium. Data from Paul Harrel does not compare on individual rounds with TNOUTDOORS, or Gun Sam _Revolver Aficionado_, or IraqVet8888, or Who-Tee-Who. Martin Fackler recommended water in milk cartons and unspun cotton for bullet catching for amatuers. He also recommended the Oehler 35P which costs over $600. Originally they shot goats or pigs. The data they finally used was 147 grain Winchester in a 9mm from autopsies in the 1980s. Not many police used that caliber and they did not have data from felons who were incapacitated and still alive.
