I remember when you began to make the change to always using the clothing. That was a great response to subscriber requests and improvement to the tests! And it definitely changed the performance results on most JHP ammo. Except HST lol. And it showed that in 380, no JHP could reliably keep up with things like the Underwood Xtreme Defender and Penetrator. Those seem to be the absolute king of 380, along with other calibers as well. That’s potentially a life & death lesson for people that pocket carry. An added benefit is that you are using what is likely the most common and best pocket 380 right now. It’s hard to beat 13 rounds in a gun as tiny as the LCP MAX. @toolsandtargets

As an OR RN, I used to work at a trauma facility there in Virginia for about 6 years, now in Alaska. I once had a guy shot 11 times with a .380 and survived. He was shot in the chest, back, both arms and legs. On xray, you could see little bullets all over the place. Some were recovered, some were left in. None of the bullets were hollowpoint, just round nose. I have no idea the distance he was shot from, and I dont remember why he was shot, maybe he just needed killing. Not a fan of the .380, but a big fan of the channel brother!

NorthwoodsTesting and GunSamRevolverAficionado channels both have done Lots of 380 HP ammo tests as well as Tools and Targets testing. All 3 channels do good testing in gel with heavy clothing barriers. There are some good Hollowpoint 380 ammo brand choices but there are not as many as other calibers have. Its either that or shoot 10 times as many non expanding rounds into the target. As you know its massive blood loss and tissue damage that stop a determined target. Yes you need penetration 1st, but expansion is also extremely important, unless your dumping tons of rounds into the target which is farely rare, unless your a cop. I disagree completely with Tools& Targets opinion on using solid projectiles in 380 for this reason. Of course 9mm or 45 is gonna be more lethal, but certian 380 HP rounds are quite effective. It just requires research.

These tests are awesome! You're going to save me a lot of money in the future because I won't be wasting my money on hollow points for my pocket .380's any longer. The .380 cartridge just doesn't have enough power and velocity behind it to reliably get good expansion and penetration from hollow points. So, use either fmj or penetrator type rounds like the Underwood. From what I've seen in these tests so far, all the popular brands of hollow points are a waste of money in .380 if the barrel is shorter than 4 inches on your carry pistol. And even then performance is "iffy" at best with a hollow point due to clogging from material. The larger calibers seem to have enough energy and velocity behind them that even if they clog up they still expand.

For some people being caught carrying can cost them their job and for others they may end up entangled in the legal system(which can also jeopardize one's livelihood.) These little pistols lend themselves to always being on you and easily concealed. I recall a video from over a year ago where John Lovell from Warrior Poet Society had a security breach on his property and was approached by a shady character. This is a GunTuber who was completely unarmed when he may have needed a weapon. I'm guessing he wanted to avoid the hassle and discomfort of carrying his usual sidearm and walked outside without it. Had he at least slipped a little mouse gun in his pocket before walking out the front door he would have been better off.

About 20 years ago, I tested quite a few 9mm loads in wet newspaper, and settled on the "White Box" 115g 9mm. When I started carrying .380s in the Summer a few years ago, I tested only a few and settled on the Hornady 90g "Critical Defense". I should probably test the 9mm "Critical Defense" in wet newspaper as well. Actually, I should probably shell out the $$ and test everything I carry in ballistics gel. Years ago, all loads were tested in CCW pistols with 2.0 to 3.0" bbls.

While there are a few .380 JHPs that seem to perform pretty well, it's frustrating to me to see so many manufacturers sticking to basically the same mid-20th century technology, charging premium rates for their product and giving sub-par results. I'm glad you and a few others do these tests. While I've always liked the .380 (I like smokin' hot brunettes, too and THAT has never helped me out in life, LOL) I have almost wholly gone back to .38 special +p as my usual compact carry option. That still takes some prudent ammo selection, but I seem to have a wider array of rounds that perform somewhat closer to as advertised. My two main .380s, a micro Kahr CW380 and a Beretta 84, still see a little carry time, but not as much a my .38 snubs and 9x19 or larger pistols.

Another for the 380 wall of shame. I remember you testing the 9mm and I would run that. I have a bunch of 40 S&W white box HPs that I bought cheap a few years ago to run at the range. I bet it would do well also. If 380 was all I had I would either pay for the premium rounds that do expand or go with FMJs. Heck, 5 boxes of the premium stuff and you could buy a decent 9mm.

Not just as good as 9mm but better than 10mm

Thanks for the video. If PSA puts it on clearance, then it'll be worth buying........as practice ammo.

Total let down for hollow point ammo. That cloth packed in there tight. FMJ performance, good grief. Totally agree with you once again. Not worth paying the difference at all. Good test and commentary. By the way enjoyed watching the leaves fall in the background. 👍 Be safe. 🇺🇸🇺🇸⭐️⭐️

Thank you sir. I noticed the leaves when I was editing. They're gonna be gone fast this year it looks like.

Might be a good target round but not for the price. I'll stick with Underwood. Velocity was a little faster than expected. A 32 Long might do better 😉🙊🙈

Another good test tools. I just can't get behind the 380 never liked them. I guess they'd be good for like a back up gun if someone had you down on the ground. Put it in their gut and let them have it. Have you or can you send one round in to bare gel or one layer of cloth? Just to see if they will expand?.

Thank you sir. I'll try to remember to try one next time I do a batch of tests and let you know .

380 hollow points seem really dodgy overall, to the point I'd avoid the caliber entirely unless I was willing to spring on those pricey Extreme Defenders. Thanks for the test.

Thanks for another great test. Like a lot of things we buy, we aren't getting what we pay for. This is important though.😎👍
