I've hated putting on sunscreen due to the 2 finger rule. It was so annoying to get all that cream to get absorbed by my skin. Then I was like 'let me start with 1 finger, rub rub rub, done' then another finger rub rub rub and done. Do it in layers is my advice

On a beauty within video, they had cosmetic chemists (I think) and Fel & Ro asked about the 2 finger rule and they said that it wouldn't be enough and to use more. I assumed the rule was a guideline because it truly depends on the size of ones face. As long as people are wearing sunscreen then kudos.

The 2-3 finger rule is better for sunscreen rather than no sunscreen at all. For me personally I use 1/8 teaspoon for my face and 1/8 teaspoon for my neck. Then I wait 5 minutes before applying another 1/8 tsp to my face and another 1/8 tsp to my neck. That way I know I'm getting the proper amount of 1/4 for both the face and neck every day.

@sweetiegenie2036
@sweetiegenie2036 Жыл бұрын
@skz143 It's 1/4 tsp for the face and then 1/4 tsp for the neck. However 1/4 is only a guideline because that amount is supposedly based off a male's face size, which are usually bigger. Most women should be able to get away with 1/8 tsp for the face and 1/8 tsp for the neck. I just go with the guideline personally because I don't know if 1/8 tsp would give me the SPF protection listed on the bottle. It may be overkill, but when it comes to sunscreen, more is better in opinion.
@peterkloostermann

@@sweetiegenie2036I also think its better to aim for 1/4 tsp. Because 1/8 tsp is about 0.63 grams, or 315cm2, even for woman most studies give median facial areas between 450-565cm2, so 1/8 tsp seems a bit too low. Also when you spread the sunscreen out of course some amount will end up on the area of the hands used to spread it out. So personally I also aim for 1/4tsp for the face, maybe of that 1.25 grams only 1.05 actually ends up on the face and the rest is lost on the area of my hand used to spread it out.

I have a mirror with an UV camera that I can bring in my bag and it is the best purchase ever. It comes with a card with shades to check that the opacity of the sunscreen is enough and I don't have to care about the type of sunscreen, just applied and re-applied whatever I need when I see in the mirror that the opacity is too reduced. An average person needs about one gramm of sunscreen for their entire face. Some german skinfluencers recommended to weight your favorite sunscreen once so that you can get the feeling of how much you actually should be using. So you can be sure that you have enought sunscreen but aren't waisting it at the same time.

If I’m not in the direct sun, I’ll apply sunscreen and makeup in the morning. Then at the end of my shift I’ll use a spray on sunscreen as a bit of a top up to get me through the evening (without wrecking my makeup). If I was in direct sun, I would skip the makeup and prioritise reapplying every few hours.

We need to re-apply regularly because the base sunscreens layer starts to crack after 2 hours. You don't need to re-apply until you are heading back to sun. The reapplied layers don't really have to be as thick or same product. If you have good base layer, all you need to do is spackle the cracks. Powders and sticks that are hard to use enough for proper coverage are useful for the top ups.

@peterkloostermann

Rubbing too long can also compromise the protection. In the official testing they use one finger, with a finger cot to prevent tranfer to the finger/hand, and they smear it out with a light pressure for a short amount of time. There has been a study that showed rubbing too hard and long reduced the protection significantly. Also some people first rub the product between both hands, or spread it out with both hands, I dont think thats a good way either, because if someone started out with the correct amount for the face, of that quantity quite a significant amount will then end up on the area of the hands, meaning not the correct amount on the face.

the rule i use is 1.3 fingers, more or less depending on how the product works. i used to have a really questionable sunscreen that pilled like there was no tomorrow, and if i used too much, it would all pill off (meaning it was useless). now i have a nice one and i can use way more and it’s less greasy, but i’m just not willing to use the sunscreen on my neck too. i use another sunscreen on my neck that my face doesn’t like, because i rarely get acne on my neck, but my face is more acne than face now, so i’m trying to invest in curing my acne with better sunscreens, bc if there’s residue on my face i want to touch it and take it off, but on my neck i don’t mind so much.

This seems really not scientifically accurate considering different formulations may be radically different. Are we going to say every sunscreen has the same concentrations of things and therefore needs the same amount of product? That seems wrong. Also, this sheer amount of product literally could not be applied many times over without majorly making the skin unhappy or looking like a clown. I get the intention of all of this, but this is just not seeming very helpful in reality. I think honestly there is likely a limit to how much you can reapply sunscreen before you must wash it off the face to start over. Nobody is being honest and talking about that. That has major implications for time spent in the sun.
@AmeliaLidstrom
@AmeliaLidstrom Жыл бұрын
I totally agree, it is pretentious and it makes people feel like they're not doing well enough .. we don't know how much money to spend, we don't want to look fucking stupid with a white cast all over our face, we don't want to break out by applying more sunscreen over an already dirty face in the middle of the day... it is frustrating. at this point I just apply sunscreen in the morning and call it good if I'm mostly indoors but if I am going to go out again in the afternoon I try to use a spray or something but yeah it's really tough
@LotusesGalaxyOcean
@LotusesGalaxyOcean Жыл бұрын
@@AmeliaLidstrom I had not thought about how pretentious it is but you are very right. That is an added cherry on top of all of this. I just know that sunscreen alone is not enough because in asia where it is prized to have very pale skin they rarely ever stop at just sunscreen. They are always wearing a hat, using a sun umbrella and on and on. Even more so they are likely to go to a pool to swim at night rather than during the day. This indicates to me that avoiding skin damage in reality might require fairly drastic lifestyle changes. Of course this is very inconvenient or even impossible for some people. What should be being discussed is the formulation of cleansers and sunscreens that could be used for this to apply, cleanse and reapply. But, let us be honest most people are not going to do this if they have to redo their makeup all the time. I think it is important to admit to practical limits to the tools we have and the resources we have. Otherwise people blame themselves or others when they have difficulties. It honestly is not people’s fault they reapplying sunscreen more than maybe once is an utter mess.
@AmeliaLidstrom
@AmeliaLidstrom Жыл бұрын
@@LotusesGalaxyOcean exactly. I don't wear makeup and it's already inconvenient enough for me to have to wash my face and re apply sunscreen at all during the day let alone every 2 hours. So for the women who wear makeup it's even worse! It's far too expensive for normal people. Some estheticians even claim we should use sunscreen after the sun goes down or even indoors. It's hard when we're supposed to throw common sense out the window and go broke to stay "safe" from the sun.

@@AmeliaLidstrom I think it’s arrogance. Everyone likes to act as if there is a perfect solution to everything in the modern world. The reality is that is just not always the case. I remember coming up with 1.25mL for face and another 1.25 mLs for the neck, chest and ear areas.The pharmacist said that it was correct so I started just using a half teaspoon 2.5mL measuring spoon and divided it between the two areas. So it looks like nothing has changed since the early 2000's as far as how much to use 👍

Theoretically the rule is to reapply every 2 hours, but that is under the condition that you are outside and sweating. If you mostly live indoors or don't sweat much or both etc, you can be a bit more flexible. I personally only reapply 1~3 times a day since I am mostly indoors.

The two finger rule "In general, you should look at a dessert spoonful when calculating how much sunscreen to use on your face. I recommend covering your eyelids and lips as well," Dr. Sophie Shottern explained to Harper's Bazaar US . If you don't have a teaspoon at hand, you can follow the famous two-finger rule, spreading the sunscreen along the entire length of the index and middle fingers before applying it, which also includes the neck .

There is a downside to having a culture of repsecting your elders though. Everything has its pros and cons. Just keep calm and ignore bs from people however old they are, eat your veggies and meat in tandem, read your books, drink water, walk in the sun, and wear sunscreen. My mom wants me to stop wearing sunscreen and start just using an umbrella or hat, but for me that is more troublesome, so no, I still wear sunscreen.

@@morgianasartre6709 you underestimate the size of a teaspoon measure (not a regular spoon). According to Dr. Michelle Wong the amount used in the sunscreen studies to determine SPF is 2 milligrams of sunscreen per centimetre of skin (2 mg/cm²). On an average adult, 2 mg/cm² means 1/4 teaspoon on the face and neck combined, or 1 teaspoon on each leg. I trust the cosmetics chemist with a chemistry PhD here, the amounts I mentioned are from her blog.
