Does This Explain Why Andor Was BETTER Than Kenobi?

For many, including myself, Andor was surprisingly good. The acting was brilliant, the plot was tight and the monologues were truely on point. However, other shows like Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi came as a bit of a disappointment for some. There were quite a few plot holes, the CGI was a bit patchy in some places and in my opinion both shows had a way too much filler. Perhaps the newly released budgets for these shows explain the perceived disparity in quality. According to Movieweb, the Book of Boba Fett received around 105 million for its total budget. Obi-Wan Kenobi was even lower at just 90 million, the lowest amount spent on any Star Wars live action series by far. On the other hand, Andor received a budget nearly 3 times larger than Kenobi’s at 250 million dollars. Do you think this was the right decision? Or do you think Disney should have allocated a bigger budget for more popular characters like Obi-Wan. Let me know down below. For more Star Wars shorts, check out this video.

On one hand yes because Andor is awesome. On another hand no, because Obiwan and Boba Fett deserved way more funding for such popular characters.

Andor is elite Star Wars ... I can see why they went in this direction with the money. Because their other stuff was sucking. But - I think Kathleen Kennedy is Disney's Mon Mothma! She was churning out useless junk, just so nobody would suspect that $250 000 000 of Disney's money had gone missing "As long as they think I'm a useless irritation, they won't see what I'm REALLY doing ..." Secretly, she was funding the best Star Wars project EVER! - the one she had always wanted to see herself

Tbf, this is the TOTAL budget of the shows. If we go per episode, Kenobi and BoBF both got $15 million per episode, and Andor got $20.83 million. Still a sizable difference, but not completely insane.
@Slipstream317
@Slipstream317 Жыл бұрын
Although I can absolutely understand a lower budget being given to a TV show, Kenobi (and to a lesser extent BoBF) should have been given the higher budget instead of Andor. With that said, Andor could have functioned without a high budget, as plot and characters are the most important part of any story. In that regard, a show as pitifully written as Kenobi (particularly the finale) wouldn't have ever been good, even with a budget as large as the movies.
@5stargrim
@5stargrim Жыл бұрын
Pitifully written? C’mon.. it was no empire strikes back, but it wasn’t that bad, be real. It had one bad character that shouldn’t have been a plot focus, and that was it really. Aside from perhaps some spotty CGI. I understand thinking it wasn’t the best, but.. pitifully written? I’m fairly certain you’re not even qualified to identify writing skill to that extent.

@@5stargrim I mean no offense, and I'd love to hear your thoughts- ...but I'm a writer myself. I am wrong about a lot, and my stories aren't exactly masterpieces (at least yet lol) but I feel at least a little qualified😵‍💫 Sorry in advance, but long message incoming; I feel like I need to explain my position very well given how harsh my original comment was :P I feel my problems with Kenobi boil down to two main issues: the writing quality being poor, and the fact that Darth Vader was fundamentally broken. 1. There are some more obvious issues, like the trench coat scene from Episode 4, but there are examples of character assassination and bad writing much more grievous (get it) than regular plot holes. Reva, who was a Jedi youngling, wants to avenge the Jedi Anakin killed- but she becomes an Inquisitor, actively hunting out Jedi like Obi-Wan and the other Jedi who gets caught during the events of the show. That's a contradiction that makes most of her actions in the show both illogical and unnecessary- and although I like the fight scene she gets in Episode 5, it doesn't change that. The Grand Inquisitor (and especially Reva, given the explanation given for TGI) surviving lightsaber wounds that would kill a person in real life cheapens the idea of character deaths, especially if a character in the fictional story/universe (e.g. Qui-Gon) dies in the same way beforehand. If you never know when a character is actually going to die or suffer real consequences, there's no tension. There's not really much tension in the show anyways, given all the characters people care about live on- and the fight between Vader and Obi-Wan is entirely pointless, if not destructive. 2. Anakin Skywalker (followed by Luke and Obi-Wan) is the main character of Star Wars- and I don't think anyone outside of people who only watch the OT would really disagree with that. The story of his fall to the dark side is an amazing concept, and although it _could've_ been executed better, it was done at least believably. But his fall isn't the most important impact his character has; it's his redemption. My biggest problem with Kenobi, and thus with a lot of other SW media, is that it tries to separate Darth Vader from Anakin (usually taking the form of dissociative identity disorder). Anakin is portrayed as the good guy who gets taken over by the Darth Vader persona- the one that kills the younglings, the one that chokes Padme, and the one that commits all the atrocities we hear about up until Return of the Jedi. But if you separate Anakin from Darth Vader, there's no real redemption arc. It's more of a mind control plot at that point, where Anakin is suppressed but regains control at the very end- and that takes away any real value the redemption has. Thus, when Vader says "You didn't kill Anakin Skywalker; I did", it's breaking Darth Vader as a character in a way not even plot holes can ever do. Thank you for being willing to read all this. Regardless of disagreements, I hope you have a wonderful day :)

You don't need a huge budget to make a better show, only better effects. The heart of the show is the writing, acting and directing. I've seen plenty of fan made KZbin videos with more heart and vision than "Kenobi".

That does seem strange, as you would think Kenobi or Boba Fett would be more marketable than Andor. Obi Wan is a staple character of the series, Boba is highly popular. I wonder if the budgets were decided based on the quality of scripts and such?

The problem with Kenobi was the writing. The quality of the actors should be factored in when it comes to budgets too. If figure that they skipped on the writing department so that they could afford the big names. And they must’ve dumped the writer’s hours after the mid season because everything after it was low effort.

I understand the reasons why, you’ve got big and known characters returning and therefore will draw in fans regardless of how much effort they put in. On the other hand, andor was made to help fill a missing gap in the timeline and also doesn’t have a character from the skywalker saga. Meaning that it’s needs to stand out more to fans, justifying the larger budget
@eds1942
@eds1942 Жыл бұрын
Should also consider the quality and budgets of non-Star Wars show. Game of Thrones, the last season had budget of $15 mil/per ep. And maybe $6 million per episode for the first season. The Expanse had a budget of around $8 million per episode on average (though the exact figures are hard to come by). And then when we get to Amazon’s Rings of Power, it’s crazy high at over 53 million per episode. The Star Wars live action shows are some of the more expensive shows out there. budget doesn’t have a lot to do with the writing.

I don't think the budget had a lot to do with it. The difference is having a competent writer and director with a clearly defined story. You could have spent 10x the amount on Kenobi and it would still have been shit.

Andor deserved that budget for its focus on writing a compelling story. Kenobi and Boba Fett didn’t even try with the stories, so even if it got all the money in the world, money can’t buy vision. Which Andor had.

Money doesn’t guaranty success, but in the case of Andor it showed that they spent a lot and it worked, Kenobi should have been the most expensive of the three; but feminist at Lucasfilm don’t care about what fans want.

Andor was 12 episodes. Twice the length of Obiwan. Although I still think obiwan needed a higher budget. That being said... a different take on the obiwan story with better writing would not have needed a massive budget. And the Andor series could have still been great based on the writing alone, it didnt need the massive budget

Andor easily has to be the most tediously overhyped tv series of 22. It wasn't terrible, but it hardly blew my socks off either.🤷‍♂️ Frankly I was never big on trying to inject 'dark gritty realism' (for the sake of 'dark gritty realism) into a fantasy based space opera. It was a similiar reason why the NJO with its edgelord Vong and their obsession with self-harm never interested me.
