Hello! *YES THAT HURTS THE BETTA FISH.* Fins are not like HAIR on humans. They are like FINGERS, and the webbing BETWEEN your fingers. Imagine someone deciding they don't like the webbing between your fingers and deciding they need to use a razor blade to cut it loose. That said, there might be some truth to the guy who came up with that medical procedure comment. You do need to debride infected tissues sometimes. Fish can regenerate pretty well. And we've bred them into an unnatural situation where cutting them might be good for them in the long term. And yes, the betta's labyrinth organ will allow the fish to continue breathing for as long as the fish is wet. It can oxygenate its own water inside that organ by breathing air as long as it has water to do it with. Labyrinth organs evolved into lungs in tetrapods when the ancient lungfish decided it was coming up onto land for keeps.
@WigglesAndFinsАй бұрын
Yes i agree they have rays which cutting those will cause excessive bleeding
@feuerlingАй бұрын
Lungs are equivalent to swim bladders
@WigglesAndFinsАй бұрын
@feuerling lalabyrinth organ is more like lungs then the swim bladder the swim bladder just a organ that helps the fish to swim

This is not a good thing to do but I don’t think it’s fatal or to uncomfortable for the fish I think it’s more like plastic surgery
@FishForThoughtАй бұрын
it's crazy, low taper fade is indeed not worth to give to your betta fish.
@finsterhundАй бұрын
Claiming that cutting off the tips of the fins is a cure for fin rot is like people saying that their dog will get ear infections if they dont crop the ears. Just take care of the animal so they dont get the issue (because of neglect) in the first place. Just like ear cropping it's probably in the hobby solely as an appearance thing but they feel the need to find an actual reason to explain doing it.
@finsterhundАй бұрын
Okay quick clarification. Sometimes betas have fins that are too long for them to swim properly. Getting surgery to shorten them can improve quality of life but it should be a last resort. Similar to the goldfish who get growths on their face. But it's a problem with irresponsible breeding and not inherent to the species as a whole. In this case it's like bulldogs needing c sections.

I had a weird case of a betta that wanted to end himself. His white fins were soo so long he noticed them when swiming around, grabed his tail with his mouth like a dog chasing its tail, pulled them fins, shreding them like a psyko. It turned into fin rot and brain rot i mean it became an obsession... So i looked on the internet and saw the triming thing. And it worked. He looked like a plakat but he was finally doing regular betta things afterwards. I had to cut every 3months or else he'd do it again. No more roting and a relieved betta according to his back-to-normal behavior until he passed away at 3 years of age... I used a plate filled with water, with a damped paper tissue on it, placed the fish in the middle, and gently covered his body with another damp tissue, spreading his fins and cut

my ex fiancé's housemate had a kitten that did a similar thing. he would flick the tail around and see it, then he'd chase it until you picked him up and distracted him. one day, he bit the end of the tail until it bled. he ran around the house screaming and it looked like somebody was dragging around a little paintbrush dipped in red watercolor all down the hallway and couch and kitchen. he would try to lick it, then he'd hiss and snarl and growl, and then he'd bite it again and repeat repeat repeat. he chewed the tip of the tail off and the vet had to cut the damaged area off. then he got out of his cone and ripped the stitches out and continued destroying the tail and they had to dock the tail completely to keep him from hurting himself. I still wish I had stolen that cat before I left the ex for good. poor little fella would probably still be alive...

I breed Crowntail betta’s, I’ve never done this. I’ve also never had a betta with fin rot. Partial water changes daily, Catappa leaves & daily mirror exercise keep them healthy. Also, some of my female fish do sleep out of water. They sleep on top of the hygroryza aristata leaves. But idk how many hrs they stay out of water. Maybe I’ll video them one night. 😂

They definitely have nerves there, bettas react to injuries and touching, to the end of their tail. Espeically cause there are no signs of fiin rot,, this is cosmetic like cropping a dogs ears when they aren't a hunting/gaurdian dog. The original video (not the one in the this video) even said this was cosmetic, as well as this not being a extreme longfin.

absolutely this!!! i had to trim my betta’s fins under clove oil because he was struggling to swim. and not to use anecdotal evidence as proof, but he did live for another 5 or so years!

This feels like where medicine becomes poison.. A human can have their leg cut off to save their life and that is ok. But a healthy person's leg cut off is insanity. I can believe that in an extreme case a trained vet could do this to help a struggling fish- I had a betta with long fins who did self fin nipping because he was getting swept up in the filter current. I was able to fix the filter flow and he immediately stopped, so I can believe in extreme cases it would probably help the fish live a longer life. The problem is that this short video doesn't talk about how to medically do this safely... so some huge spawn of amateurs who don't know where to stop are going to start maiming their fish to achieve" perfect" fins and THAT is where the harm is truly at with the cutting.
@fairfathomАй бұрын
@@StuffieLover69Interesting points about the dogs. I can say that many breeds cut the tails and ears because historically they were poor man's dogs- if you did that it meant you couldn't be taxed for owning them, if I recall. I actually know in many countries they are now making it illegal to do that to dogs anynore- my "Niece" is the first wheaten I ever met without a cut tail, and it curls up and has such a cute floof. When you pet her she naturally curls it around your arm or leg :) A lot of breeders are starting to bring that mindset to America, or when they show or breed dogs in multiple countries.

According to ChatGPT, there are three main reasons for intervening with a betta fish's fins: 1. The first is for aesthetic purposes, particularly in competitions. Some believe that trimming the fins promotes more uniform and appealing growth, but this practice is widely considered cruel, as it causes unnecessary pain and distress to the fish. 2. The second reason relates to diseases, such as fin rot. In severe cases, some may choose to trim the infected areas to prevent the disease from spreading. However, this should only be done as a last resort by trained individuals. The ideal approach is to treat the condition with appropriate medications and maintain clean, stable water conditions. 3. The third reason involves self-biting behavior, where the betta damages its own fins due to boredom or stress. Instead of trimming the fins, the focus should be on improving the fish’s environment by providing enough space, decorations, and stable water parameters. This helps reduce stress and ensures a healthier, happier fish without invasive measures

QOTW: Dojo Loaches ftw in the fish category, but aquatic turtles rank high in the more general "animals what swim" category

I feel like the beta fish and the first video was sedated somehow because there was no way fish would be that calm when having its fins trimmed.

Qotw: leopard bush fish. Love how the tail fin integrates with the other fins and makes him look like he's got a stubby butt.

The reason why they needed to that is because betta fish are overbred by humans in the first place. It does help with fin growth; like, you know when the 'fin rays' aren't alligned (again, due to overbreeding). By cutting the particular part off, the fin rays will split, and when they heal, they'll grow back looking 'proper', well, from the psycho breeder's perspective.

Betta buddy had a better fade in the actual after video. The video of the fish swimming was the before. Not that its good to do, but the actual after video is "impressive". lol

When cutting goldfish scales it is not the same as what he did to the betta because the goldfish get it trimmed to make sure they can see because the scales grow and grow until it the fish cant see
@Vyse1234Ай бұрын
Definitely looks like he's shaping the tail instead of cutting off fin rot.

There are many common practices in other countries that we find appalling in Canada and the USA. However, these same countries think our fish keeping practices are a joke! To each one's own. 🤔

hi, how are you? I really like your videos! I wanted to ask if a 2,5 gallon tank is good for a betta fish.
@jetazei7807Ай бұрын
I'd go for at least 5 gallons, better if you can get a 10. It will be much easier to cycle and to keep good parameters (I speak from experience 😅)

betta fish will bite their own fins off if they get too long for them to swim with, mine keeps dong it and ruining his beautiful fins 😭
