Twisted metal 2, now this is a game. Twisted Metal 2 in many ways is the peak of the series in my opinion, and one of the better games on the ps1. This is one of those games I bought during a period of time when I was just buying retro games with any sort of name brand recognition behind them, even if I had no interest in the franchise. I knew of Twisted metal, and I had a copy of Twisted Metal black, so while I was doing the rounds on Craigslist one day a cursed amount of years ago, I bought this game along with some other games. But I really had no interest in the series beyond it being something I'd heard of. So my copies more or less sat on my shelf for the better part of a decade. I'd attempted to play it a few times, but I never got into it, and usually quit after a few levels. It wasn't until I'd really gotten into twisted metal black a few years back that it and the rest of the series really started to click with me. But this one in particular really stuck out to me in the grand overall scope of the series. Because like I said, it is a game.

Nintendo Power also had some walk throughs for some of the featured games, rarely single issue full guides though. most of the time it will get you roughly halfway through a game or it's a multi issue thing. Granted, this was back when quicker games were the norm (Contra, TMNT) instead of RPGs like FF. Though Nintendo also had a Brady/Prima Games-like subdivision that published guides for the longer platformers out there and RPGs that Nintendo published. I remember having a SMB3, DKC, and the first 2 pokemon generations guides as a kid (though the Red/Blue guide went with the intended type matching instead of the bugged ones for Ghost attack damage against Psychic Type pokemon)

What people miss is that with the special bar and the excellent handling, the skill ceiling on this game is extremely high. When you can take a tight turn and drop a napalm on someone's head accurately, or back up just in time, drop a mine and hit them with a napalm while they're flying over you're car, you're starting to unlock the brilliance of this game 😉

You didnt need to buy the book you bought to learn about how to unlock sweet tooth. Gaming magazines back then would regularly write about that stuff and some magazines would have a few pages dedicated to the most popular games at the time with their cheat codes. I started with TM2, and it was hard to go back to try TM1. TM2 is the best of the series in my opinion as well. My biggest gripe is that damage doesn't register if the enemy is too far away. I don't know if this was a hardware limitation, or way to stop the enemies from killing each other constantly. They do attack each other (when they remember to), but they are usually too far away from you for the damage against others to register.

While I'd be keen to argue 'accessibility' I want to qualify that being able to play a game and being good at said game are two completely different things. Colorblind options, waggle-alternatives, audio adjustments, "strobe off" modes; all more than welcome. But what you see as discouraging - I see as motivating. This said, I do wish it had the option "Continue on Medium" or "Challenge Minion on Medium" so you didn't have to replay everything you already did up to that point.

7:15 Bog standard gaming magazines back then also had extensive cheat sections to go along with the normal line up of stuff. I know this because I to this day have an entire binder of magazine pages that were ripped from their books and placed in plastic, along with some printed out online cheat pages and old gamefaqs guides from the early 00's. The thing is basically my own homemade cheat book.

Personally I believe this game really shines brightest in its co-op mode. I would play with my brother and cousins many many times as a kid and we would switch up who was playing with each map. It was a ton of fun to fight each other on the secret maps like Suicide Swamp and Rooftops but my favorite was Suburbia. The visual comic book style was iconic and still holds up to this day. I actually bought this again last winter and played it for a bunch of hours. Still a ton of fun even if only single player with many great memories. Loved the endings, specials, maps and gameplay. So I pretty much agree with everything you have to say about this game. This is one of if not my favourite game of all time. I just disagree with you liking the TM1 health stations better over the pick ups but that’s minor. This game has the perfect gameplay and difficulty. The controls aren’t perfect but you get used to them and they are amazing to pull of shots. The AI can be annoying with the freeze spam but other than that you can learn enemy patterns and it becomes less of a rng fest. Making half the game locked out from playing on Easy shouldn’t take away from the game itself even though it’s a bad decision for new players to the series. I find Black to have way more problems than this game and I even prefer 3 & 4 over Black.

I feel like Twisted Metal 2's difficulty would have been mitigated somewhat if two things were done. One is your lives recharged after every level and two is if it implemented a save system rather than a password system. Rogue Trip did both of these and thus is a more reasonable challenge. Also the soundtrack in Twisted Metal 2 is the best in the series by far and has never really been topped.

Calypso definitely still screwed them over since a couple of plane tickets is far from the actual intention of their wish, but if they'd been a little more patient and cautious they just would have been disappointed instead of dead. This game is still awesome 26 years later, time for them to remake the game. Voice character profiles, custom paint shop like in GTA 5, being able to upgrade your vehicles, online play, maybe 4 player co-op?

I still remember a lot of button sequences for this game. And Minion and Sweet Tooth unlock codes, of course.

I might vehemently disagree with it being the best in the series (or even a good game ☠) but still a well made video with a lot of good points made.

I'm playing this right now. Got amazing memories of it from my childhood. However, I can't remember certain enemies just being able to spam freeze blasts at you to the point where another hits you before you have unfrozen from the 1st one. I got an entire health bar drained that way multiple times. And the boss Dark Tooth is impossible for me at the minute. I remember finishing the game as a kid though.

twisted metal 2 [USA] is the mod for this game which fixed some bugs and made the game harder, one of the bugs the modder fixed per my request, was specter's ultimate ability focusing only Player 1 at all times, even if bots or player 2 were right next to the bot specter - specter's ultimate still flew the whole map to hit the player 1, that was fixed in that modded version, the dark tooth's head also became harder than the dark tooth, arguably, still just as squishy but it can melt you in like 2 seconds, 2 or 3 new levels, one of them is from tm1 (the boring one), a bit more lives, overall it's still harder to complete it on hardest difficulty than the default game

It had a great aesthetic and feel but yeah they really screwed up by not having every vehicle have their own unique driver. Not sure why they decided it was a good idea to go that route.

It still baffles me to this day that firing backward required a button combination just to pull off, it should've always been hold back on the d-pad/analog stick and press fire or just press down on the d-pad (like in Twisted Metal 2012), you're already sacrificing accuracy, you don't need to completely sacrifice steering or waste a shot because you messed up the combination as well

This is my favorite game of all time because of the memories attached to it. Every day after middle school, my sister and i popped this into my ps1 and beat the game every day at least a couple of times. I had ps4, She had n64, which we used to play star wars pod racer on. After a few games, we would tune in at 6pm for the simpsons. Those were the days. Thanks for these videos, mr bacon

Thematically, the aggro pedestrians makes sense. If there were a bunch of lunatics in death-kitted cars tearing around my neighborhood and blowing shit up, and no one was doing anything about it, and no one planned to do anything about it, maybe I'd take potshots at 'em too. Stop setting my neighborhood on fire, y'know? Now, would I stand out in the open, or in the road itself? Probably not, but I've never been there. Maybe I would!

I agree with your “user friendly” point, I can play 2 just fine but something just feels “off” to me in terms to its controls which I understand is not the fault of the game its just an age thing, if anything I feel its like learning to drive an old car, yah it works just fine but its got some quirks you need to get used to as opposed to perhaps a used car thats a decade old at most

The best part about this was it causing me to immediately jump onto Amazon to search for said strategy guide Actually didn’t try this until the year that 3 released, borrowed it from a neighborhood friend…and proceeded to rent it like five times after that. I would have to double-check, but I think my youngest brother owns the disc now, despite he himself having no interest in the series…meanwhile, I still have to check out every game from 4 onward

Have a great love for this game, though it's been forever since I last played it. When you were talking about the AI though it flashed me back to one time when I was a kid playing and I was facing Minion. I was low on health so I hid in one of the temples, in a corner and Minion was driving around outside when eventually he slide/drifted sideways and hit me with like a power missile. I was in disbelief.

I waited forever for this game to come out when i was a kid! My younger brother and i both had our own ps1 consoles in our rooms, but he had to share a room with our baby brother, so was always bugging to use mine because the youngest had barney or some kid show on the tv, but we would play for hours trying to kill the hell out of each other! This game may not me worth the price of a cd these days, but back then, it was absolutely amazing! Then we waited and begged for T.W.3.... but thats a story for another day. Also, did you blow up the tiddies on the statue of liberty? Shoot a power missile at the statue of liberty
