Our focus today is disinfecting! This is a #cleanwithme video about how well Vinegar disinfects my home. Clean with me and find out how well a natural cleaner, vinegar, disinfects various areas around my home.
Here is the Better Homes and Garden site I used.

How do we know how well natural cleaners work? Are cleaners disinfecting properly? I am curious to see how well natural cleaners work to kill germs. I decided to conduct my own experiments to see how well vinegar disinfects my home. In this video I clean and disinfect the kitchen counter, kitchen sink, light switch, and toilet (underside of the seat).

Great video, as a long time Janitor I've used both residential and commercial cleaners. What I want to say is that most people don't realize or notice that vinegar and bleach come in different percentages of strengths. White vinegar from the super market is only %5 vinegar. Higher percentages are available for purchase on sites like amazon in quantities of 20%,25%,30% and 45%-50%. I would love to see a test with a bottle of higher strength vinegar and a bottle of SH ( sodium hypochlorite) essentially pool bleach. Both are moderately priced and may give greater results. A word of warning g though both SH AND higher strength vinegar have a strong scent to them and I suggest using a smaller measurement when being used.

I’ve seen people use vinegar with dish soap. That’d be Interesting to try. Though, some people say that the dish soap would just “deactivate” the vinegar or something. It’d be interesting to see if it does. If the dish soap worsens the results of the vinegar, or if the results are better. Or maybe the only reason that the dish soap x vinegar mix works so good is just because of the dish soap. 🤔

Hi there! I have considered using more petri dishes, right now I use one split up due to cost. I purchase lots of petri dishes, sterile swabs, and cleaners. Once I get monetized I will put aside more money to use more dishes. It would be interesting to conduct a study to if there are different results with using a split dish vs separate dishes. If I see a massive difference then I would change. So for now, I will be using 1 split dish. I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you for watching.

@@FieldOfFocus I respect your advice, but to be honest, I've had way way too much expensive higher education (BA Vanderbilt, MBA Stern NYU) with way way too much highest level math, mainframe computer programing, business management "theory" - 98% of this isn't practical, total waste of time and $. I'm also 62 years old. Now I need to just do things, make some honest income. No I'm not going to be doing dangerous Chemistry or nuclear energy, nuclear weapons etc. Plus I live in a dirty, violent S Side Chicago area - anything pretty much I do I bring in is going to be safer, cleaner than what's there now. My hunch is the 3 dive bars that have been in this neighborhood, their bathrooms are going to more germs on a petrie dish then in any of your experiments anywhere. Remember that old wives tales about being careful not to get VD from a toilet seat? Well some of these toilet seats in my neighborhood you could get VD, STD, COVID or other plagues! Anything is gonna be an improvement! 🙂 Thanks for all your informative and entertaining cleaning, disinfecting videos. Jaye Left Behind in Chicago

This is one of the better videos attempting to show people the effectiveness. Theres so much misinformation its scary. Cleaning viniger is different than food grade used for cleaning. And many sights are giving the wrong dilutions for cleaning industrial stregnth is also very potent. Way more. Cleaning and disinfecting are 2 diff things. Reg food grade viniger only kills some bacteria and germs on contact. If it was allowed to sit it would kill more. That is why it will not be listed as a disinfectent. Cleaning grime etc its horribly inadequate. Because the ph and acidity is so low. The problem with the this test is that all the surfaces can have diff germs we dont know what germs or bacteria or viruses were on any of the surfaces. And theres diff amounts of grime that hold onto bacteria etc. Kitchen sink for example with simply have waaay more. Then she cleaned the toilet with a sponge. Straight viniger as a rinse for hair can kill dandruff fungus and foot odor fungus. Which i use. I use commercial stregnth or industrial stregnth for cleaning only certain things since it can etch surfaces. I clean for a living and have to educate my customers constantly when they want me to use baking soda viniger and lemon juice. Then i charge them 10 bucks an hr more on top of their current hrly rate since it takes me longer to actually clean.
@FieldOfFocus
@FieldOfFocus 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! I have lots of friends who like to clean with vinegar and essential oils, so I figured I would test regular vinegar (not cleaning grade) because I think that is what most people have in their homes. I agree with you that vinegar is no good at cleaning grime… it just isn’t. What you see as a problem with my testing, not knowing what germs are on each surface, I see as the best part of all of my testing. I like to test real world situations. No one knows what type of bacteria is on a surface, people just use various cleaners and disinfectants. So for me, I think testing in a real world home environment is a great way to show the efficacy of cleaners and disinfectants since it is not laboratory settings. I did use a brand new sponge to test the toilet cleaning because I wanted to be able to hold enough vinegar there and felt paper towels just wasn’t good enough. I did throw the sponge away when I was finished. I am pulling together a set of compilation videos that will show which cleaners are most effective in what areas of them because different cleaners remove/kill different types of bacteria and different locations in the home have different types of bacteria. Curious, since you clean for a living, what disinfectants do you use?

Interesting results. It's never made sense to me to dilute vinegar, though. A lot of people do this, but I don't. It's affordable enough to buy it by the gallon and lasts a long time - even at full strength. Diluting it would make it's disinfecting properties weaker - not stronger. My guess as to why you received the results that you did is because they recommended, for whatever reason, to wipe the vinegar up with a warm rag afterwards. I think that recontaminated the surfaces in the kitchen. Also, I'm sure you and others already know this, but letting the product sit on the surface for a minute or so will make it more effective when using it as a disinfectant - regardless of the product being used. So if you'd let the vinegar stay on the surface longer then wiped it up with a paper towel, in the kitchen, it probably would have worked better. I couldn't tell from the video, but did you let the 50-50 solution air dry after wiping down the toilet and light switch? That could have been the difference for the toilet...even at half strength. Obviously it didn't make a difference for the light switch. If you end up trying out vinegar on your couch, maybe you could try it again at full strength in the kitchen and bathroom, leave it on those surfaces for a set time, then wipe the surfaces with paper towels to see what happens. I think you should ask "Santa" for a truckload of Petri dishes, swabs and agar for Christmas this year. Lol 🙂🤣😆

Thank you so much for your thoughts. I will probably retest vinegar some day as I had higher hopes for it as well. I do believe I let the 50-50 air dry, I would have to dig through the raw video to be sure. Usually if I wipe it, I show it on video. There are so many things to test with so many variables! I am glad to see you have interest in these experiments!

First, white vinegar does not clean like apple cider vinegar. Second, testing with a Petri dish is not a good way to test vinegar because vinegar kills pathogenic bacteria with probiotic bacteria and enzymes. So you are going to STILL get colonies in the Petri dish after cleaning with any vinegar; but it may be from the cultures that are present in the vinegar. I’m not sure how to test this though.
@FieldOfFocus
@FieldOfFocus 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts! I didn't think about comparing Apple Cider Vinger. I used the white vinegar because the homemade cleaner recipes I found listed white vinegar. I can add ACV to my list to try out. So I will point out that the vinegar did kill lots of bacteria and I felt it was a good effective cleaner for the kitchen counter and toilet seat!! It was less effective at the sink.. but like I said in the video there are different bacteria around in different places, and different cleaners disinfect some strains better than others. I don't think I have found a cleaner yet that can effectively disinfect my kitchen sink! I am happy you pointed out that vinegar cleans pathogenic bacteria with probiotic bacteria, I did not know that. I will look into that some more. So what would be interesting would be see if I can get that probiotic bacteria to grow on a petri dish. I think if the probiotic bacteria where numerous then I would have seen the same amounts in the after section in each dish, and I didn't. SO another great control would be vinegar alone to then subtract the amount of bacteria introduced from the vinegar that grows in the vinegar section from the after section... I will add an ACV cleaning test, and try to grow the probiotic bacteria in vinegar to my list of projects!

@@FieldOfFocus : It would be VERY interesting to see that video on what you can grow in a Petri dish from acv. I’m starting to wonder, in fact, if the REASON the vinegar did not clean the kitchen sink well is because the bacteria in the sink was not entirely pathogenic. I can be 100% WRONG and way off, but THAT is why that video will be interesting to see!🤔 I’ll be looking for THAT video!👍🏾 I’m going to send this one to my mom, btw, because she actually uses white vinegar to clean. Thank you for the videos. Not to be "that person", but...I think you are recontaminating some of the areas with the way you are cleaning. Please watch some information, youtube or something certified, maybe surgery site cleaing, on how to wipe an area without respreading the bacteria. When the water was sprayed in the sink after you disinfected it, it looked like some of the spray may have washed over the unwiped area, thus bringing the bacteria back onto the site. Also, once an area is cleaned, you dont go back over it again with the same sponge. House hold sponges aren't delivered sterile, thus may have their own bacteria. Also, how to spread on a petri dish. Also, you should not be speaking when you streak a plate, may carry bacteria from your mouth. Just trying to get more proper scientific, correct information. It does make a difference. Thanks for your time!

Hi Carol, Thank you for taking the time to comment, I appreciate your thoughts. So I do have a disclaimer in the video description that says “DISCLAIMER: All of the bacterial experiments that I perform are conducted in my home which does not have the same conditions as a laboratory, and is for entertainment only.” I cannot replicate a perfect laboratory setting, and the beauty of my tests is that I test cleaners in a real world environment, not a sterile lab. You make a great point that people should not talk when there is an open petri dish, I do not speak while my petri dishes are open. If there were any cross contamination my Control section would show bacterial growth. Agreed that sponges are not delivered sterile, again, this is how people in the real world use them.. And that is what I am interested in testing, real world situations. I don’t want to create perfect sterile laboratory settings, but rather real life home testing. I appreciate your thoughts and comments and will always be improving how I test cleaners. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I can explain why you still had bacteria on sink and all afters. The sink was more likely from the water itself. As for after. If your sponges were not cleaned a few times while washing you could be spreading some bacteria around during the cleaning portion without actually getting all them with the vinegar. Most people also won't use clean sponges. That already have bacteria growing.

Hi there! Great question. What I don't show on the footage is that I do wash my hands between each sample. I do use sterile swabs and I do not touch the swab, I also do not touch the agar of the petri dishes, or the inside cover of the petri dishes. I would waste so many gloves if I were to wear them which each sample that I take. I also have off camera sampling that I do as well and sometimes double petri dishes in case we have a catastrophic failure. Remember, this is my home and not a lab setting. I am not replicating laboratory settings but I am maintaining as clean an contamination free environment as possible. The control spot on each dish shows that I am doing an ok job at preventing any cross contamination with hand washing and careful handling. Thanks for watching and thanks for asking!
