Weather change is definitely felt in my knees, living on the west coast (rainy) is the worst with osteoarthritis, also I found elevation ( atmospheric pressure ) affects mine as well. I took note of this when I visited different places. Wondering why my knees were worse at home than other places. Thanks Docs haha love your silly senses of humor.

Not a joke, it is true!!! Weather changes definitely affects my muli-joint stage 4 osteoarthritis making it more painful, as well as asthma flare ups at times.

I take NAC 600mg Twice per day. Zinc 40mg at night, with Magnesium citrate and Magnesium Gylcinate total dose 700mg.. AND Boron 3mg at night.. ! Selenium and a Multi Vit B, with Folate in Not Folic acid… I add Extra Vit B2 and Thiamine to my morning and Lunch time dose….. …… ! . I am 31…been active my whole life cheerleading, dance and gymnastics and now I am feeling the wear and tear. For me though, I am trying to figure out which one I have. RA or OA. And yes, I can tell when the rain is coming every time! BUT…the pain also occurs when I have taken an edible. Anyone else have this issue?

I am so happy to find this video... thank you. I moved to Idaho 1 1/2 y/o ago to be near my son and family hoping to retire here. I find the long cold winters are brutal for me having Inflammatory arthritis and OA in so many areas in my body (feet, lumbar spine, L hip, hands, cervical spine) and now dgx with fibromyalgia as well. Not sure if it was due to working as an RN for 25 years that help bring it on. It's very painful and very hard to move (I used to be an avid hiker). I see a Rheumatologist and some meds help however I know I need to move to a dryer warmer state when my husband retires in 2 years. Don't know how I will get through another Winter. This video will be helpful for me to show my husband to help him understand why I feel so poorly. Thank you again. Patty

Awesome. Yup. On colder nights sleep w an electric blanket. So cheap. Also keeps the bed dry which is much healthier. Start the day feeling so much better. Thank u for sharing. This way I stay away from meds. Am retired so can take an afternoon nap on colder days in my heated bed. Then get up and enjoy the afternoon.

I always found that the change in weather affected my knees as well, even before I was diagnosed with OA. I had a full knee replacement on my left knee and it has come along quite nicely. However, I still get twinges of pain in the left knee, especially with the temperature change. Dr. Weening, you were my surgeon, and it has been almost a whole year since I had this done. Watching this video has re-assured me that this is normal. Thank-you both for these great videos. They are very helpful.

I've heard this all my life! Older people would always complain about weather changes and how it worsened their aching joints. As I've gotten older, I experience the same thing. When I was much younger, I experienced migraines. One day a coworker noticed my migraines were worse when the barometric pressure was higher. Luckily the migraines stopped after 10 years but my joints continue to give me problems. And since I'm older now, I definitely feel a difference when the weather changes. And my joint problems began in the 80's, having my first jaw surgery in 1982. I now have the second prosthesis in my jaw. After having an arthroscope over 20 years ago, both knees are constantly aching and popping besides being great weather predictors. It was about 80° here in Texas yesterday and today we woke up to the 40's. It will still be cold tomorrow but by Wednesday it could be back in the 80's. Of course this is why I call Texas the bipolar state because of constant extreme changes in the weather. And if you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait 5 minutes and it will change. But I've seen a 60° drop in temperature within 30 minutes. That's why I always carry a jacket, umbrella, blanket and suntan lotion in my car. You never know how the weather will change. Thanks for dispelling the myth of arthritic people being able to predict weather. Because at some age, everyone will be able to give a weather report. 😉 Now excuse me while I go lay on my heating pad.

It's definitely true since I'm about 7 more years down the road for a left total knee replacement. When we got the bad snow storm in Minnesota my left knee was really bothering me with my oa. I totally agree. I had neck surgery back in 2002 and my neck and shoulders get very sore and stiff in cold damp weather. And very bad thunderstorm storms in the summer can cause soreness. Those big low pressure like the Texas Lows and Colorado Lows in the winter Low pressure systems make me ache.

Absolutely TRUE! Changes in barometric pressure feels like an attack physically. Until there is stability in pressure, my body with pain is on a roller coaster of ups and downs, of adjustments ... which in turn keeps the mind on high alert for threat. Changes in barometric pressure hijacks the sense of wellbeing for the body and the mind ... in my experience.

Thanks guys! I do believe weather can change how you feel. I'm stuck on the pressure theory. A bad winter storm may lower the pressure 1/2"hg (standard sea level pressure is 29.92"Hg). A jetliner cabin at cruise can be a full 5" below standard sea level pressure. It seems people would be writhing in pain. I have PsA and even on long flights I seem no worse off. Cheers

LIving in South Florida for 45 years had its own "thing" ... but, moving back to Ohio to marry my eighth-grade boyfriend at the age of 69 ... Wow! The snow and ice were romantic as a young person (all cuddly, etc.) but as an older person just cold and slippery. Pretty for a few days. But I can hardly do anything in the cold - even with the thermostat set on 70 degrees. I just feel sluggish and achy. I would tell my fairly-new husband its the cold and change in pressure that affects me ... has to be. Anyway, thank you both for confirming this for my own peace of mind. I love your videos-they are so very helpful and fun. So, this morning when my hubby wakes up I will say "Ok, I agree with you, winters will be in Florida" Bring on the Trivial Pursuit! I'm definitely a case in point here. With two prosthetic shoulders, and in need of a couple of other joint replacements (knee, DIP joints both hands, and possibly R hip),I can truly testify to this fact. I don't remember the last time I haven't been in horrible pain. Every single day, I am hurting to move about just to make it through the day. The damp cold days we have here in New Brunswick can be very excruciating on your joints. When it rains in the summer here, I'm cringing. Also, I'm only turning 44 in June. So OA definitely doesn't discriminate. In my family, it's known as the McKinley curse. Most of the men in my family have been affected by OA. I truly don't wish this on anyone. OMG! It is soooo true!! When my kids were small and in school, I could predict a snow day (school closure ) long before the school board called it! We lived on the east coast of Canada with lots of snow storms! Thats is so true. I know or at least can guess when it will rain. When the clouds show up, my back gets stiff, sacroiliac joint and hip movements get painful. When i keep myself warm, or put heat on the joint area it gets mellow. So i love summer days 🤝

I love the COLD weather, but my Osteoarthritis hates it! I take Ibuprofen only when pain is practically unbearable....my lower back, knees, shoulders and topside of my hands. It's why I cannot do Custodial work anymore. Flare ups are quite painful.

Facts! I’ve had a discectomy on my lower back when I was 27ish (I had a herniated disk pinching my sciatic nerve)…I’m 41 now and a year ago I suffered from my second back injury. I had a bulging disk. I was also told that I have arthritis in my back. In between and after my two injuries, any time the weather changes drastically 10+ degrees in a short amount of time my back kills me. Not sciatic nerve pain (no pain in the glute or down the leg) just pain around where my scar is. Stiff, tight, sore…it’s hard to move freely. Heating pad helps. I live in AZ too. Going from 112-114 degrees in one weekend back down to low 100’s in a couple days still has that same effect. In a few days it goes away. It’s the change of pressure.

I don't have arthritis (that I know of), but I have joint pain due to hypermobility, and rain, snow, and cold definitely affects me, as well as a scar I have on my leg. I have heat intolerance as well, causing nerve pain, sweating and dizziness, so trying to be just the right temperature is a struggle. I mentioned it to a doctor and she said that's pretty normal considering what I'm dealing with so that wasn't very comforting, but good to know I wasn't overreacting like parents and teachers kept saying.

It is so very true about the weather affecting arthritis. I live in Melbourne and I hate winter 🥶 as I have osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and I also have a deformity in my collagen which has affected my joints, muscles and other internal organs, so my life has been hell with all these issues. Thanks for this info regarding the weather and painful OA. My family think I am nuts whenever i tell them it is going to rain because my knees and wrists are sore. Living on the coast of Queensland this past summer has been especially difficult because of the extensive and increased rainfall we have experienced. My arthritic joints have been very painful most days.

Years ago my elderly Springer Spaniel awoke crying one morning as a big winter snow storm was approaching. Her vet could not find any problems with her, and theorized her pain was due to the changing barometric pressure related to the storm (plus he felt she had some dementia, which made her pain seem worse.) So, yep, I'm a believer.

I installed a barometer app on my phone to see the correlation. Yesterday there was a huge swing in the pressure change - first it went up to 1036 hPa and then it fell to 1026. I was in agony! Good to see that the science is finally catching up with what ALL arthritis patients experience when the weather changes.

Thank you for the validation! I’ve had 13 spinal surgeries and have been loosely tracking for years the impact barometric pressure swing has on me and found a direct correlation with pain. It’s never been about the pressure on any one day, instead it’s always been about the variance. The greater the spread, the sooner, longer, and depth the pain goes: However, most interestingly it creates different pain types. I know this doesn’t sound that far fetched or maybe it’s not even surprising but here’s the deal as; lower variances only create localized pain around the damaged parts of my spine, while greater variances trigger symptoms near identical to impinged nerves needing surgical repair, including inability to even walk. I don’t know why it creates the nerve symptoms as I had imaging done early on during one such episode and no physical impingement was seen on the MRI. I usually a large enough variance has to happen within 24-48 hours to trigger the harsher symptoms , while a gradual increase of the same amount over 7-10 days will have relatively low to no noticeable impact. Symptomatic impact can occur anywhere from 24 to 36 hours prior to, and up to a 3-5 days post deviation; variances occur of course. Most people do not understand it until they experience it personally.

Lol.. I was diagnosed with Palindromic Arthritis in my mid 30's . Winning the arthritis lottery as it were because there is no permanent damage with this form of RA. Weather did not really have any effect during a flare-up. However, recently my arthritis morphed into PMR and that type of arthritis is definitely affected by weather. Too much sugar , caffeine and salt will also affect it. The human body is amazing and we still have so much to learn. Really enjoy your videos. Favourite is the viagra giggles clip.

2 acl/mcl reconstructions and 3 meniscotomies on the other, going back to the early 80's. Mid 50's now in age, last few years is when the weather sensitivity has kicked in. But, on other hand, I have more energy in the cold weather, and can spend hours in the gym, so it is a tradeoff.

Hey Docs, greetings from New York city, can you talk about long leg discrepancy after THA? I just jot my hip replaced on the 24th of February and was in the hospital for a whole week with excruciating pain. I noticed my operated leg is at least one inch longer now. What's next?? If your other hip is arthritic they get evened out after the other side is done. If not, sometimes patients can easily live with it. Others get inserts or shoe lifts. Hope that helps.
