-A bit sad that you didnt catch the scene where sanji discovered the Invisible fruit in a book and the REAL reason why he wanted that fruit. it wasnt because of the peeping thing but he just wanted to disappear as a child due to the constant abuse from his family. -and also the reason why he adores women so much, because the only 2 people that were nice to him as a child that far were basically 2 women. -Also the reason why he is "intense" when it comes to emotional overreactions is he basically got all the emotions from his brothers(that they are lacking now) due to the experiments and the stuff that her mother took during her pregnancy.

There's a black market for trafficked devil fruits in the OP universe which the Yonko have access to and some participate in it. Big Mom definitely sought fruits for her children that were specifically food related. I doubt they were terribly sought after anywhere else because they aren't really remarkable power wise.

I dont' think the Big Mom flashback is supposed to make people sympathetic thowards her: in my opinion, is supposed to make you horrified of what is essentially a monster with the mind of a child throwing a tantrum. As how she came to power: it's implied that Streusen was the mastermind behind her rise to power and as her children became of age they started to enforce her rule ; also, mindless or not, nobody can deny that she is insanely powerful!

There is a degree of sympathy there, but also recognition that even if what happened to her was sad, and a lot of it really was not her fault, she is still a massive danger to those around her. She's just too strong for anyone to effectively discipline, and unable to control herself when her hunger pangs hit. Something can be sad and make you feel sympathy for what person has gone through, while also being horrified at the result of that and what it led them to become, and it feels like that's the mix it was aiming for. To show how much of what Big Mom became was just a result of her childhood being a clusterfuck of bad things. But also that it doesn't make her any less of a terrifying threat.

"Big mom is literally the weakest link" I think that's kind of the point though. In an arc so heavy with familial and self identity themes, big mom created a toxic environment where her own children fear her, where insults and ridicule are fair as long as they're not aimed at BM, where its members constantly hide information and lie so as to not get in trouble with BM and where her own children turn on her on a dime after finding true love with the person they were forced to marry. Luffy and the sh didn't bring down whole cake island. Big mom did.

Yeah, her story is all about being a person that is way too powerful and that is what carried her because her family is just that scared of her. The tragedy of her character is that she never had anybody discipline her because nobody can oppose her. She cannot be saved (I think) and that's sad.

Agreed, she rose to power because she is just too damn strong for anyone to stop her from doing that, but it's also clear that her empire is only as functional as it is because her kids work their asses off to make sure it stays that way despite Big Mom being essentially a giant child. Without them, everything would end up collapsing, and she has no idea because she simply is too immature to think about this stuff.

I liked the Luffy v Katakuri fight BECAUSE it felt detached Out of the gate, it felt like Luffy wanted to fight Katakuri for no other reason than he wanted to prove he could. He still needed to do it to take Kata out of the fight on the Sunny, but Luffy legit left the mirror world with Brûlée, trapping Kata in there, he didn't NEED to fight him anymore... he WANTED to. And it felt like the entire time it was a fight to get Kata to recognize Luffy and take him seriously... which he did Katakuri telling Flampe off, stabbing himself to make things even, getting mocked for his looks, and then the whole "the people on the sideline are annoying" "They can't stay on their feet anyway" conqueror's haki clash was incredible. Luffy earned Kata's respect multiple times throughout the fight, and he says as much, and at one point thought to himself he isn't fighting to take down the potential future threat to Big Mom, but because only because he WANTS to fight Luffy, who he sees as an equal. A lot of people think Kata let Luffy win, but the way I see it is, at the end, they were both beat up badly and exhausted, but only Luffy was still motivated to keep fighting. Kata lost mentally, so his body gave out... and then that last sign of respect, Luffy taking his second hat to cover Kata's face for him... and then Kata smiling after learning Luffy made it out alright...

Popular and accurate statement: Sanji has nothing to be redeemed for. His character flaws make him human, they're not supposed to just go away. The real purpose of Sanji's character arc was to build up the Left Arm of the Future Pirate King, and, finally, tackle his bigger backstory that had been teased since the East Blue Saga.

Whole Cake is my favorite arc, in large part because Sanji has been my favorite Straw Hat since Baratie and this arc did so much good for him. But instead of taking about Sanji, I want to talk about Big Mom. You say that she's the weakest link in her crew and... yoy're right! She is, and that's the point. She runs her crew and her family with the mentality of "Mother Knows Best". Her children are so terrified of her that they don't dare bring up her hunger pangs or any flaws in the way she rules. She touts familial loyalty, but that's a one way street. She's only loyal so long as her family is useful to her. Lola went off on her own and as such Big Mom practically disowned her. Chiffon, Pudding, Praline, and even Katakuri to an extent all betray her. Even her "loyal" children like Smoothie are sometimes loath to act on their own, preferring to stay back until they recieve direct orders from Mama. She became an emperor not because of her tactical genius, but because she is a very literal force of nature. Strong enough to shrug off literally everything the Straw Hats threw at her. Her greatest weakness is that she is a slave to both her desire to control and, ironically, to her uncontrollable hungers. She herself is her own greatest obsticle to her goals. And this creates an interesting parallel with Luffy. He, too, is a glutton. A slave to his hungers both for food and adventure. The big difference is that he does not try to control *anything*, especially not his crew or family. Instead, he lets them poke holes in his logic, call him out on his errors, and even let's them go off to do their own thing even if he's not happy about it (Jimbe). And trough this, he not only inspires loyalty in his crew, but even wins the loyalty of his enemies and rivals. Despite being so similar, you can quite clearly see why Luffy will become Pirate King and not Big Mom. I know this likely won't change your opinion on her completely, but I hope it gives you a new appreciation for her at least.

That's actually a really interesting way of looking it at it, thanks for writing that up! I did cut a section where I talked about the parallels between Luffy and Big Mom, and how food in general is a surprisingly important aspect of this arc, but my point was more so that I'm extremely surprised BM didn't wipe herself out before even coming into power. When we see her in WCI, she of course has plenty of people supporting her and keeping her in check - but it's the lead up to that that i have a hard time picturing, if that makes sense. 😄 _Also thanks for not writing an essay about how I'm a horrible person for not liking Sanji_ 😂😂

Never expected Sanji to beat out your Zoro love, but props to giving our Love Cook proper unbiased respect in relation to his development and story in WCI. Still wished you coulda delved more into Sanji and his progression from FI to now, since you always bring up "pervy humor = bad" since you seem to constantly rag on the TB reveal, which still has reasoning from his younger days beside the joke of the "bath", such as his compassion to Kinemon in PH, stubborn trust in Viola and temp captain role in Dressrosa, and his non-hesisant sacrifice on Zou. Hate a gag, but don't hate the character for having a flaw that has actual reasoning and has assisted in progressing his development. Zoro getting lost is a gag (imo Ryouga from Ranma 1/2 did it better), but that gag is imo more insulting for Zoro, displaying he can't follow a straight path or follow a simple instruction (the stairs of Enies Lobby). Sanji was conditioned for his chivalry by Zeff, and being surrounded by burly men (and with him being a healthy young boy), gave rise to his love of women (compimented by the fact women were his only positive relationships) which served as more of a commodity to the men at Baratie. But as it stands, you'll always hold Sanji's perviness against him no matter what. Like it's so wrong for a healthy man to have a healthy libido. Let the guy live and enjoy life (cause he is not hurting or forcing himself on anybody)...God knows he was denied for a good deal of his growing up.

While dragged out, I do think the whole running from BM and long fight scene with Cracker made sense since Cracker was such a step up in difficulty for Luffy compared to other opponents he had fought. Cracker and Katakuri are commanders of an Emperor and Luffy needed to fight to get there. And this is hammered home with how Luffy couldn’t even touch BM without being knocked out himself. BM is a menace and it showed-but maybe got dragged on a bit much to be annoying. And regarding BM’s flashback… I don’t think it makes you sympathize with her, but flushes her out as a character and helps you understand she wasn’t necessarily born evil, but a product of her upbringing.

Don't you think it's kinda unfair to take Fishman Island as an example of a typical Sanji gag because, let's be real, it was exaggerated even by Sanji's standards and just so happens to be in the 200 chapter stretch where Sanji wasn't doing much? Usually it's kinda balanced imo. Also, if we're willing to go back to as far back as Thriller Bark to see a low moment in Sanji's characterization, shouldn't we also go back a few arcs before that, when he had so much shine, like Water 7, Skypiea, Alabasta? All aside, everyone's free to like and dislike whatever they do or don't, I'm just biased lol.

I thought seeing as how the only people in his backstory who truly treated him with any care/love were women, would change your mind on why he’s so childishly crazy about women and doesn’t really know how to express it other than ridiculous gags. He was literally going to give everything up to be with pudding, I feel like that says a lot about how serious the gags are and that shouldn’t be a significant part of how you look at his character. I think the point of Big Mom flashback was summarized in one of the chapter's titles: "Natural Born Disaster". That was what the flashback was meant to make you understand. And yes, she totally ate all her buddies and Mother Carmel. I think in the manga is still alluded, but more clear. I also think that Katakuri wasn't really beaten. He made it quite clear that he "accepted" defeat and threw the fight. Btw, Zoro was the first to arrive at Sabaody because Perona took him there. She even said so. He didn't improve his sense of directions at all.

I loves this arc. Not only is it just amazing but it hit me from a personal standpoint. I relate with Sanjis past a fair bit, atleast to the extent of the general childhood abuse anyways. Back when I watched it, it hit me like a truck and made Sanji one of my fave characters not because of his personality and such but because he is relatable in an odd way. I found his desire to survive inspiring and seeing him happy at the end really gave me hopes for the future of my own life, hopes that bore fruit which only makes me relate more as I can kinda understand how much it would mean to him to have friends he can trust and a life he can enjoy far from what it used to be. In the end it gave me a real reason to love sanji in the way I love each of the strawhats. I could ramble about it for ages but yeah.

As one said, "someone's trash is another one's treasure". Sanji's not a easy character and I understand why people don't like him, because his "gag" crossed the line or whatever.... He's my favorite from the very beginning and I absolutely LOVED him this arc. I'm in the minority that thinks he was handelt very well: we see how helpless he got in this whole situation, how undeserved he felt being rescued, how shattered he was when his sacrifice didn't go anywhere. Even after meeting Luffy again he was ready to practically die in WCI, he'd try to save his terrible family, but also knowing Big Mom is too powerful. And he was not wrong in the end at all. Luffy did not beat Big Mom and they escaped WCI but barely. Without the help of the Sun pirates and even Germa 66 (not to forget Pedro....), they'd sunk the Sunny. Also noone gives him enough credit for the wedding cake. A cake he didn't even taste but was able to recreate it perfectly! A cake that did use a lot of time to be baked, a cake that stopped a Yonko! It was brillant by Oda that Sanji was able to stop a great enemy not by his fighting but with his other too underrated skill: cooking! Cooking was also his motivation to flee from Germa in the first place. So overall, feel still free to not like him, but please respect the wedding cake!!!

That shift of Sanjis character and him asking Luffy for help really was amazing. Because he’s never asked for help because he’s since the beginning been very self sacrificing and not just like what zoro did in thriller bark he will try to sacrifice himself for no reason and because of his family he looks at himself as a burden. And after sanji asked for help and Luffy said the line “that’s who you really are” omg and he fully excepts sanji man the character writing is insane.

So there are 2 cover stories for WCI : - the 1st is Capone's crew finding Lola and the big guy in it saving her from the Marines and marrying her - the 2nd one is still ongoing in the manga right and so far it revealed that Niji and Yonji were captured after the final fight , and it focuses on Ichiji and Reiju rescuing them , with some help from Ceaser , and there might or may not be some other people invading WCI

Yeah you were not supposed to like Big Mom. Just understand how she came to power and the toxic family dynamics and intense corruption that is pushed onto the characters by other parties. This was prevalent in Fish Men Island , Dressrosa and now here. Strussen (head chef) essentially molded an mentally innocent yet physically absurdly powerful child into a monster similar to what happened Doffy who was already a monter but lacked the power so instead of being molder power was provided to him to do things his corrupt self think and dream about. I think you should look out for this in the next arc too

I think it’s cool how Brook was able to hurt one of Big Mom’s homies with the power of his devil fruit despite Big Mom’s devil fruit is supposed to be the superior version. It shows that even a inferior devil fruit can go against its superior counterpart if trained hard enough. And the best part is the Luffy fight with Katakuri is the exact same concept as well!

We first saw Luffy overcome the "superior" version of his fruit and after RoofPiece we learned that Katakuri's fruit was the inferior version all along. So yeah you are right: even an inferior devil fruit can go against its stronger version if trained hard enough.

Regarding Big Mom's flashback: I am pretty sure you were not supposed to feel sympathy towards Linlin but instead understand how she ended up in her current position. I commented this because totally not mark mentioned the same thing in his WC part 2 review but realized what Oda was going for in part 3. I personally think that a sad backstory isn't always intended for us feel bad for the characters, it can also be just for context.

I Love Sanji a lot, he is Loyal to Luffy and will do whatever it takes to protect his Captain and crewmates, and Luffy really cares bout him, sure Sanji has his quirks but all the Straw Hat pirates have a quirk but it's those crazy antics that makes the Straw Hat pirates such a good crew, it's what made them good friends and family and they have the strongest bond and friendship, I think it's unfair for Sanji to be judged based on his desire for women and weird quirks with romance, he has really good traits and Sanji did Change, I love Sanji for his Loyalty and Trust in his Captain and crewmates especially his Captain and he is a good fighter, cook and friend to those he truly cares about

in the flashback he was reading a Devil Fruit encyclopaedia (it was there in the manga idk about the anime) which is where he learnt of the Clear Clear fruit and I'm pretty sure there is a strong implication that 6 or so years old Sanji's dream was to be invisible to his family because of their sheer cruelty specially since the panel in which we see the book is immediately followed up by Judge entering the room and yelling at Sanji for cooking and forbidding him from doing so every again. so yeah personally i think it was that and not to peep on women also before he ran away from Germa at the age of 7 or 8 the ONLY two people to have shown him any care whatsoever were women and i think a traumatised child's mind conceptualising it as loving women more than most things and ending up with the weirdness he displays around them as an adult is not that unlikely. of course all of this is just me defending my boy Sanji and you can obviously have your own opinions he's an anime character at the end of the day and i can understand why you are so done with the perverted character trope it is one of my most hated ones as well and normally i genuinely cannot stand it Edit: to clarify, i can't stand it in One Piece either but i can look past it better than i have been able to with almost every series except Chainsaw Man (that's a whole other conversation) and can therefore love Sanji regardless

As much as I love this arc, the chase, and a lot of other parts were seriously drawn out in the anime. This was the part of one piece watching week to week where I finally gave up on the anime and became a manga reader.

The Absalom thing is solid on paper , the sudden reversal and the counterintuitive shift in status should be comedic. I do think that it goes to far In undermining the only redeeming quality of the weakest part of his character, his hyper fixation on women that before this was tempered to some degree by the fact that he was a true gentleman. On a side note I've found that the best part of the humor in OP is that it tends to take a bad gag and run with it untill it gets funny, either by hitting it just right in the end or by the very anticipation of the bad joke making it funny or both. So in a way I hope Oda thought of the one funny application of the pervy nosebleed trope and Sanjis running gag is simply the warm up needed for the eventual delivery to hit perfectly.

I have to say that WCI had so much high points in a 'normal' arc since Water 7/Enies Lobby. Brook finally felt like he had become a real Strawhat to me, Luffy vs Katakuri rose to be the best fight above previous best Luffy vs Lucci, Sanji leaving the crew paralleled Usopp leaving the crew, but it felt much more real now than it did back then when Usopp felt like he was just being a bit of a crybaby to go so far. It definitely has downs too, and as a whole I still consider W7/EL to be the best arc all-around, but finally after all these years it felt like the old top moments are getting broken by even greater heights.

Would like to hear your thoughts on this theory Korotos 👀: After seeing the Big Mom flashback way back when, I had a theory that getting a devil fruit in the One Piece world would be like getting titan power in aot. But due to the fact we see Whitebeard NOT eaten, maybe you just need to eat A PART of the body, specifically the heart. Big Mom ate Carmel’s whole body, including the heart if this theory applies. In Whitebeards's case, what is on his body at the end of The Paramount War before getting killed? A huge hole on his CHEST from Akainu's magma attack. Possibly big enough for Blackbeard to grab his heart and eat it. This is a SERIOUS long shot (heck I don't believe in it too much...), but it’s the best idea I’ve had about this multiple fruits thing.

For the big moms family mostly having food fruits the way I took it is there is a encyclopedia with some fruits images and pretty sure someone at yonko level should have copies so she can pick and choose or if someone has a fruit she wants just kill them and have fruits nearby to get it right after

Big Mom only became an Emperator beacuse A. She had experience pirates that took advantage of her strenght and guide her (Strussen and other pirate es) and he probably took over until Big Mom was old enough B. Her sons and daughters are keeping her whole Kingdom in order She is stablish to be a child in a monster's body

Yeah, I think big mom’s arc is really just that her existence in and of itself is tragic. Her personality is so absolutely self-absorbed by any and all things that interest her. She’s not a good person because she cannot look past what she wants to see the people who’s feelings or well-being might be affected by her actions. And when those actions are backed by super human strength and hunger, well… I see the backstory as a way to show that there really is nowhere that she truly belongs. She simply cannot be a functioning part of society so she made her own, supported by clever people who see her strength - they can manipulate her, but never truly control her. That’s why she’s an Emperor. And yes, I believe the implication indeed is that she ate all of them. That’s how she got her devil fruit!

I mean the woman was organising interracial relationships across the world and was in charge of a massive crime syndicate as well as still finding time to abuse her children. Honestly the true tragedy of Big Mom is the fact that she was given the worst possible upbringing at every turn. Mother Caramel did little to curb her violent impulses and would just make excuses for her outbursts and the destruction she caused. She never learned even the slightest bit of restraint and that's on the adults in her life when she was a child. She wasn't really given much of a chance to actually learn from the mistakes she made and the harm she caused and instead was pressed into maintaining a childish naivety well into adulthood. Yes, she almost definitely did eat her friends and mother Caramel. And its also clear that Streusen, the man who took her in after that continued to feed into her violent narcissistic tendencies. As for how she became Emperor, I'd chalk that up to Streusen as well, honestly it feels like he was the brains behind the initial building of her empire and now Big Mom has spent the past few decades on the work that was done for her with her supplying mostly the brute force. I also believe that Streusen is most likely the father of Compote and Perespero, her oldest children (there's quite a bit of physical resemblance there)

Yes, the residual smell is absolutely horrible imo and smokers generally have an 'aura' which makes everything smell like smoke afterwards too. 😂 Smoking on buses themselves is illegal here too, people just tend to get on seconds after finishing smoking and the smell lingers. _Though all of that said - I have an extremely (and I mean extremely) sensitive smell, so all of this may just be my weird problems_ 😂😂

I'm currently reading One Piece and finished this Arc today and it was absolutely amazing. Sanji went from one of my least favorite straw hats (still like him) to one of the best and i also really love how much time this arc gave to Brook. I disagree that Sanji is a creep tho, sure in the absalom fight he talked about wanting to do it, but the thing is he never does, he could easily spy on Robin or Nami but he never does and thats the difference between him and the disgustung filth that is absalom. His simping only annoyed me in fishman island, it was overdone and actually plot relevant and i didn't like it.

yes, your feelings on Big Mom flashback are mostly correct it wasnt to make youo feel pity, but to know where the origin of her is, tragic yes, but not forgivable for what she has done and yes, she ate them... as I said... tragic... currently the comunity believe that a Devil Fruit may be stored somewhere in the body, heart or brain or something similar, hence why when Big Mom ate Mother Carme she gained her powers now in the anime, it is shown that Whitebeard suffered 2 injuries in the chest, but in the manga it was 1 on the chest and another near the end blew part of his head off (akainu did), hence why we think its either of the 2 parts

I think about the mom flashback you are right. It's not ment as redemption. She is - maybe unintentionally at first - an evil force of Nature. She is greed and selfishness in a Bad way, so she mirrors Luffy, who is it in a funny and wholesome way. She never got boundaries, she's an absolute tyrant and unable to learn and improve. I love how Oda uses her in the story and i hate her gutts.
