I’m an INFJ with an INTP best friend. We can relate to each other since we’ve had similar experiences, but are still different enough that we can learn and grow from observing the other. She is constantly saying she wishes she had more friends like me, meanwhile I’m saying the same thing about her. When it comes to best friends, I believe the personality types matter more than they do for regular friends. I’ve got friends from all of the different types, even some ESTP’s. I find that even though we might not see things entirely the same way, having those unique perspectives is beneficial.

I agree. As an INTJ who honestly could use more life experiences. I used to think if I met another INTJ I would've met the person who can understand me. When I finally met an INTJ I was amazed by the level of similarities in the way we think. Naturally, I want to be friends with this person so I did what I never thought I do my whole life, I initiated steps to consolidate a friendship. Because the person is so annoyingly well... me. I have to take on a role of an "extroverted feeler" which becomes more exhausting than I anticipated. I ended up giving up because that friendship is just not working. Now, the lesson I get out of this is that though types do aid in certain aspects of friendships there are much more important aspects that should not be overlooked

As an INTJ with an INTJ BFF ... there is distance between us, but it's generally at a comfortable level. We'd never work as a romantic pairing because of that distance (I need more closeness personally, I'm not sure about her), but as a friendship, it's great. She has her own business. Sometimes I help with projects because her staff is her and her mother. I get consulted on plans to see if I can find holes that she's overlooked. We bond through our hobbies because we don't talk directly about emotions 99.9999999% of the time (we're both into roleplaying games and card/board games and literature/the arts and love animals). She's more outdoorsy than I am by far. And I'm more into videogames. I'm more socially aware (she has bizarre blank spots on etiquette and behavior) and she's more outgoing with people/more of a leader while I prefer a consultant position. I can do leadership, I'm just not usually driven enough to put myself forward. When I was younger, I knew some coworkers who would judge if people would get along by saying "You're basically the same person." Despite the same personality type, we're not the same person. And I don't think either of us would want it any other way. Though we're both "weird" fantasy/scifi girls who stay connected by talking about ourselves by not talking directly about ourselves and letting the inferences and stories we create do the talking for us. Through talking of gaming character we can talk about everything, even dark and painful emotions, without having to make it personal because it's someone else doing the feeling and saying the things. It's reflective of me and her, but it's not quite the real us so it doesn't count, and it's left up to interpretation what's real and what's acting. We both know the truth of it, but we're not forced to admit it to ourselves or each other. We're also free to explore ideas without having to commit to them. And I'm not sure if that makes any sense at all. But I far prefer it over empty conversation about sports, alcohol, fashion, or whatever it is people think I'm supposed to be doing to fill the time and build relationships.

@@whitneyd6827 I'm an INFP and I'll say this, I'm usually the nicest and most friendly in a room full of people, (or so I've been told), but I don't have any close friends that live in my area. When I try to make some friends, because I rarely initiate conversations that aren't in person, I tend to make a lot of acquaintances. So I feel guilty to say this, but if you meet an INFP, you have to be the leading friend if you want to get closer to us. It's something we struggle with every day because we get so much anxiety from initiating social connections that are not in person, or stimulating us right in front of us. Bottom line, we are great socializers, but horrible communicators. I like videogames a lot, especially first person shooters, so whenever someone mentions something I'm interested in, I go from nice, quiet, and harmonious, to super talkative, almost losing my voice from it. That's all. I hope I helped you on your journey to finding us INFP's!

@@whitneyd6827 Thanks! I was never Mr. Popular in school. Always the one person who would chime in every now and then, but nobody really _knew_ me. I always envied extrovert's abilities to be so open and confident, and to be able to make friends so easily. But as I got older, I started looking towards my own strengths more, like my empathy and intuition. It really brought me down when I wasn't a natural at things like team sports, because I realized later after discovering MBTI that it was a sensor thing, but I was surprised that things like English and writing weren't as easy for everyone else. Sorry for the rant. As per usual the Fi and Ne bounces around aimlessly with no adherence to any prompt or logical conclusion. Anyway, have a good day!

Although I'm extroverted I think all ENFJs are a little awkward, so I was always envious of ENFPs and ESFPs for just throwing caution to the wind, standing up for themselves, and having fun without fearing judgment. Like I won't dance in front of anyone unless I'm drunk because I get embarrassed and don't want eyes on me. If I'm unabashedly dancing I probably need to calm down and drink some water. It's important that we all learn our individual strengths and I've found that mbti has really helped me, now that I know to focus more on Se and Ti!

Sure, a biiit chaotic / confused from my pov, but no drama and no meaningless smalltalk. I sometimes feel emotionally dumb, because they can put certain things into words so well. I agree with what they say, but wouldn't be able to voice this that way and I rather see I'm a bit underdeveloped in that matter, at least comparing to them. 😅 You know, we INTJs value when someone doesn't seem to be intimidated by us (mostly we don't intend to do that, it's more kind of vibe; in my experience INTJs are perceived as intimidating especially by ENFJs and ENFPs) and treat us like humans. :3 No nonsense either, not trying to butter us up for whatever reason. Of course there have to be unhealthy INFPs (and INTJs, and other types...), but I guess I can tell I'm fortunate enough to meet only healthy ones (well, there was one long term liar, but I'm not sure if it was an INFP or ENFP).

Types do gravitate to similar interests, and I've had my mind blown at a dinner table where 4 of us were INFJs. The others were ISFJ, ENFJ, INFP and ESFJ and one non believer. Unsurprisingly, the non-INFJs could see the overall INFJ personality type much clearer with 4 of us interacting together, and we felt understood. It was amazing.

@Perseus Georgiadis Thank you Perseus, but given the rural alternative community we live in, and the interests that brought us together, we're confidently INFJs. In the 40+ years outside of this community, I'd never met one other, but here, we've met in a field especially suited for INFJs to flourish. What I'm interested in is WHY we've become INFJs and although there are similarities in childhoods, it's not enough for an AHa! moment. To meet more INFJs you go where all our needs are met, and in my case, it's an alternative community, with a wide ranging and active spiritual community, and a very special hospice. I think you need to see a bunch of INFJs together to be confident, like the Enneagram panels, when you think you are a type, but sit with others of that type, when you are it's clear, when you aren't, also clear. As I said, I've never felt so understood in my life. It's worthy of a meme. 😉

INTJ: I rarely meet any other INTJs, outside of my own family. And My dad(INTJ) and I tended to clash quite a bit as I was growing up (both of us being stubborn and independent types), but now I understand him and can relate to him much better since I've had kids of my own. So I know from experience that it is not automatically easy getting along with my own type ;). The most harmonious relationships I've had have either been with NTPs and NFPs. We "get" each other because of the N I think, but the P in my friends gives me the space to be independent and not feel as if someone's trying to dominate or lead me. We respect each other's need for freedom, while I can still "take the reins" when needed. N-P types will be chaotic and aimless, from time to time. OTOH, I've been "adopted" by an ESFP and an ESFJ. They find my occasional social awkwardness cute, I suspect 😆.

I agree. firstly it’s hard to find another INTJ in the first place. Secondly, I don’t necessarily get along with another INTJ, or be comfortable for long periods with them. i know this because i managed to end up in a technical expertise department that have a disproportionately high ratio of INTJs. maybe one is a close friend, others are just colleagues. the people i’m actually close to are the ENFJs and ESFJs and the odd INFP who adopted me! usually it happens because they were confusing themselves by thinking about something in weird leaps of questionable logic and then i’d be like, picking out the only relevant bits, draw a line through them and it would be suddenly clear, and they seem to think it’s magic.

Yeah, us xNTxs have a great burden: No one is as interested in the world as we are. Combine that with the fact that some of us are Type 5s on the Enneagram, and that can be (at minimum) very annoying. yep, infj and enfp have a very specific bond and after they get used to how each other's mind works, I think that the correct term becomes not just friendship, but family, lol. it can be easily mistaken with a romantic connection, and sometimes it can really work as something romantic, but for myself I found that romance only darkens such a relationship

I get you (I’m a INTP too) and I especially really have difficulty making friends with people that are more introvert than me or just as me because it becomes quite stressful at a point. It’s probably because of this that my best friends are a ENTP and a ENFP, they teach me how to be more open and they pull me out of my shell if needed and I love them for that even if i can be annoyed by that sometimes. Thanks to my ENFP friend I can understand more about thinks I normally don’t care that much or simply show me a different way of seeing things that is interesting because it’s different than mine. Wow, similar with me. I am an INFJ. In 2020 and first half of 2021 I was so closed to people in my class, like I wasn't talking so much too anyone and I didn't like that. I wanted so much to open up but I didn't know how to. Then new school year started and in October or November in 2021 I realized that two boys in my class had helped me to open up, to be more comfortable with people, to be more myself, to take responsibilities for some things and to be more practical. One is ESTP and the other one is ENTP, but the ESTP one helped me the most. I don't know did they do that consciously or not but now I can sometimes even start the conversation which was impossible before. Especially that ESTP guy, he is btw full of energy almost every day and every time when I see him outside of school he just cheers me up :)

So true, James. I’m an INTJ and while I do have INTJ friends, I would have none if it weren’t for our other-type friends-in-common. They helped us bridge the gap that INTJs naturally have with other people. Also, having friends of other personality types help us get out of our comfort zone. My best friends are ESFP, ENFP and ENTP, with some INFP, ISTJ, INTJ and INTPs here and there, and I love how they bring different perspectives into my life while also respecting my boundaries (it was a learning curve with the ESFP but we’ve gotten there). Same here. I'm an INTP who has an INFP best friend and we're always mistaken for sisters by our teachers and total strangers. We have so many things in common, but l always try to find the logic in something while she doesn't care about that thing unless it influences her in an emotional level. She used to cry a lot, but as the years went by, she is now able to not cry even if she wants to, even though she's incapable of hiding her face expressions and sometimes her anger. Her mood switches all the time, it's like one moment she dos something and the other moment she transforms into someone else.l'd say her biggest problem is her insecurities and the balance she tries to keep, while I'm always so cold,lacking empathy and having lots of things in my head but not being sure if the other person gets what l'm saying, so l try to make it simple, my best friend is almost the only one that fully understands me (she's smart but she lets emotions take over). Also she's less lazy then l am, we both use subtext a lot, but l'm more straight forward, she can understand what others are feeling better than me, l'd rather prefer to be told what they're feeling like hence l'm not good with emotions at all.

I find talking to sensors to be most difficult in that they tend to assume I'm really dense. I try with them, but it's almost like speaking a different language. You'll see something beautiful and comment on it and they'll be like "Meh I've seen that before." Hahaha. That said, I tend to enjoy being around people who are different from me, oddly enough. I'm with myself so often that I like speaking with people who see things a little differently. Extroverted sensors are probably my biggest challenge, though, they seem to not understand my need for peace and quiet.

That's quite unusual there's obviously a scale from intuition to sensing dominant and I think here's where we start to talk about limitations of typing. I've struggled with the vast majority of sensors as an INFJ because they're better at nutting out details but slower to getting to the big picture and just don't "get" my perspective but often insisting that they do😅 I imagine the two of you come very close on that N-S spectrum.

I’m an ISFJ. The two closest people to me are my mom, another ISFJ, and my husband, an ENFP. My mom understands me on a level that no one else has, and while we do disagree on the things we value and consider moral, we react the same way when put into similar situations. I feel like we’re the same person, in some ways. I’m an INFJ and ever since learning about typology I’ve longed to find another INFJ as I’ve felt like they could truly understand me…I thought I probably wouldn’t find one because like you said they are advertised as super rare, but I’ve came to the realization that I’ve actually grown up with another INFJ my entire life, my 1st cousin…Yes we can communicate very well together and think the same on most things, which I believe is mainly due to the fact that we grew up together, but strangely enough I can’t truly connect with her. She’s always been sneaky and cold to me, she doesn’t treat me with respect and looks down on me. You would think we would be best friends but she just seems to try and manipulate me, not to mention she’s super self-righteous. I’ve had to separate myself from her some as I got older. I also have an ESTP father who I really don’t like, a very strained relationship. He is quite stingy, mean, and very insensitive to our feelings, not too sure if that relationship will ever be anything. Honestly I have reason to believe that these two may just posses dark triad traits which affects their personalities. I just wanted to share my personal experience with a few people who have personalities that are said to be ideal for my type but haven’t been for me specifically. It goes to show that it really just depends on the individual and not necessarily their personality type always. Now on the other hand me and my brother who is a ISTP get along really well. He’s really a easy going person and I feel like he is actually my best friend.

I'm ENFJ One of my ex colleagues was same type as me and he eventually became the manager. We found it really helped our working relationship and further our friendship because we could see why the other was doing what they were doing. We would think "ok why would I do that?" "Oh for this reason" and if it wasn't that then the 2nd reason would definitely be correct. At work it really helped things run smoothly coz we could see the other persons plan. We literally didn't even have to finish explaining things. I think it helped a lot that we both just wanted the best for our students (we're teachers) and colleagues It was great. Also, I have sooooo many ENFP friends and I love them to pieces. I find that we're similar enough but the differences keep it hella interesting.

I'm (probably) an INFP, and I lost all my friends years ago :( But I found my husband, also an INFP, and it's the only relationship outside of family I have managed to maintain long-term. I used to be best friends with an INFJ, though - I first got typed as ENFP, which was cool, because those two have mirrored cognitive functions. We were very close.

My closest friends are intp and infp. Im istp. Basically we're cool with each other not contacting each other regularly but we can talk as if time never passed. I support the infp at concerts and things. Me n the intp talk about whatever the intp wants to rant about. Ill just be like hmmm interesting 🤔

I agree, that making friends really has more to do with similar life experiences rather than personality type. I don't know the types of any friends I've had, but I know some were way more outgoing than me, but we shared similar life experiences that we bonded over. On the other hand, I've also had friends who had completely different life experiences, but we just somehow clicked. I love that you used the word "smattering." It's a great word! 😁

INTJ here. Yes, I find myself drawn to my personality family group; I married an ISTJ and it works well for us, but don't underestimate the value of having a few friends who are very different than your type. They can provide insight and inspiration in ways you can't get from similar types. The older I get (I'm 48 now) the more value I see in diversifying. Also, never believe your own PR. We INTJs are often told how insightful we are, and it's true sometimes, but insight can come from all different kinds of people-we INTJs haven't cornered the market on it.

Agreed. I'm not excellent at telling people's cognitive functions, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are ESTPs, ESFJs, ESFPs, ISFJs, etc. among the people I get along with, even if they're the types that INTJs (ye I'm part of the NiTe gang woohoo) are said to not get along with. I'd say my best bud is a Ti dom and my best pal a Fe dom (I'm guessing they're intuitives but I'm not 100% sure, people are complicated). I'm not friends with people because of their cognitive functions, it's more about shared interests, values, lifestyle, and connecting. I've two friends who are passionate extraverted and I'm a master introverted hermit, yet we get along super well because we have a common ground and we respect each other's space despite coming from both ends of the spectrum

I’m an INFP and I get along very quickly with other INFP’s. However, I find myself usually not able to keep them close to me. 1) because we both need space 2) our morals are so strong, that a difference in them can lead to an irreconcilable argument

I'm an enfp and my bestie is istj. Sometimes i'm too draining / demanding for her, and sometimes she is too boring / needs her space. But besides that, our friendship is great! We like talking and i can always trust her:)

I'm ENFP and my best friend is ISTP. And she said that we are like the best suited for each other. I was like: nooooowaaaaay?! And I checked, and internet said YES And then she was like: 'well you are like crazy and over the place at times, so I kinda balance your energy' And I thought: 'That's why you are my best friend, you know me so well !!!!' True true. Out of my 5 closest friend, 4 are introverts, and only one is an extrovert lol. (1 ISTP, 3 INFPs, and 1 ENFJ) I'm an ENFP :)

as an intp, I don't have good friendship experiences with xxfjs in general. Sometimes I say things they don't like, and they get hurted, and i basically can't be free to speak my real thoughts. They say "we can't make other people hurt" and I say "what matters is the truth". I usually get along well with other tps and extx, because we can talk and discuss our thoughts in a better way. I recently had a fight with an infj, I don't even know how this is possible lol But actually my best friend is an intj (my mom). we always have good philosophical conversations

Twinziee! I am an intp and my mom is an intj. Opening up to people is freaking hard I know, I understand that I closed myself off when I parted with my bestie (we broke our friendship. I don't even know her personality type though but she is out going, extroverted at the same time introverted... doesn't matter. But I found her a little bit ..err overwhelming in my opinion she is awesome idk I get bored quickly so yeah it died out ) back to the point...you might hear this statement everywhere that you need friends blablabla. I want to tell you,...you don't but you need people and you gotta work on how to make conversation and how to connect with people. You don't have to please people but get out there people can be fun and trust me one of the best people I have met is ENTPs. I love meeting other extroverts. They like me for who I am and the moment I loved myself I don't really care about what I say as long as I am not being disrespectful to you, yeah you get offended that is your cross to carry as long as I am telling you the truth, I don't care. Of course I have hurt one two three, apologize where necessary. The world is beautiful, people are tiresome but also amazing. You have to cross some frogs and sharks before you find your butterfly. But don't stress about friends just focus on you, friends will come to you. We meet new people all the time I mean, there has to be that one. Put yourself first, work on yourself and your goals acknowledge your weakness, your fears your strength, perfect your talent, allow yourself to make mistakes, be daring, let go of your fears, work on your confidence, work on everything that you think will bring the better version of you. Do anything you want, throw your hoodie on that cute guy (lmao) do whatever, trust me no one cares (in a good way) you can literally do anything and no one cares( apart form hurting people of course) ,focus on you and blur out the rest, my dear I am telling you will walk straight to the right crowd. (I am rumbling too much. My apologies but i am going through the same thing and I am working on being more outgoing. There is a certainly point where you have to make the first step.) Lol I went off point. My extroverted brain just couldn't shut up. Sorry.

INFP here! I know two other INFPs and I may understand them but I think we're to similar in different ways to work as best friends (if that makes sense)... But I have two INFJs and an ESFJ as best friends and we work very well together! ☺️ Though I wish that I could meet a ENFJ to see if we vibe together as good as Ive read online 🤔
