My dog is also reactive to guests coming into the house or even onto the yard. (He's a very good guard dog and takes his job seriously) My job is to teach my dog to turn it off on command. We are still working on it but he's slowly getting better. I have found it helpful to have guests alert us when they've arrived so that I could put my dog in his crate with leash on because he just gets too excited. After guests have arrived, Georgie stays in his crate until he has calmed down. (No more barking and lying down) after he's calmed down I walk him with leash and hand to where he can see the guests. If he gets too excited we keep distance. After he calms down, He's allowed to sniff the guests while the guests all ignore him. After he gets to know the guests he starts to get comfortable and guests get to give him treats but I always advise not to stop and stare into his eyes for too long as it makes him nervous. He's been doing great. I'm a musician so I have jams and rehearsals at my house a couple times a week. We've been going through the whole routine but the routine is getting shorter and shorter and now 5 minutes into rehearsals he's lying on the floor chewing on a bone. Yay!! It's a process but consistency pays off.

I love that he is firm with the dog. I think a guest who is being growled and barked at would also be more at ease if they saw the owner reacting like this and correcting the behavior. Unfortunately many people don’t really know what to do and actually pet praise and feed dogs treats while they growl and show aggressive behavior, expecting that it will calm them but it actually reinforces the behavior.

What about a dog who does not pay attention to treats/commands when the guest is over? I've had my two dogs ignore anything I give them when I managed to keep them sitting and quiet for a few seconds before they bark again. I have a dog in my families house that belongs to my brother and sister n law. She's a very sweet dog and was given up by a friend of theirs. She has severe separation anxiety that has gotten worse over the years. She also barks at every single person who approaches the house, walks on the deck, walks sometimes out of a room, or if she hears something outside at a neighbors house. She barks at my family or anyone she knows who comes onto the deck/walks into the house. She likes getting to know new people but seems super intimidating if you don't know her. Her hair is one end and she goes stiff initially and her barking even sounds very aggravated? I don't know how to explain but we love her to pieces. I do know exercise and also probably some other things could help her. They have tried a vibrating collar it only worked for so long, they tried saying no, be quiet and every time she is quiet when someone approaches which is SUPER rare, I do praise her for being chill. I just am wondering what other options could we do?

The lifting of both hands to show that she did not have a treat was what started the snapping. I train all my dogs to become accustomed to people just reaching out at their faces and grabbing them gently by the mussel. It's a game to them. No one likes strangers just reaching for their faces. Dogs are no different. I have also found that sending my dog over to a stranger to be fussed greatly comforts the anxious dog who is unsure of others.

A good technique is to get the stranger to throw the treats behind the dog, so then the dog can approach for another repetition. Rather than the dog remaining too close to the stranger for too long in one sitting, that is why Lupo started to react. It was too much. It's always good to critically analyse footage, I do it to myself all the time !

My doberman does this specifically with men. If a man comes to the door or walks in the house, he is hackles up charging the door. Once they come in, he's hiding behind me, barking with hackles up. If they make any move like they want to get closer, sometimes, he pees. I would say he acts like that with 85% of the men who come into my house. Still to this day, he wants to like my dad when he comes over but cowers anytime a movement is too fast. This has been for the entire 3.5 years that I have had him since he was 8 weeks. I can't even have the damn plumber come over.

Thank you for this. I’ll definitely try this to my 3 yr old dog. A little back story. He was with me since he was only 2 months old. And we live in a condo where pets aren’t allowed ( well, before. But now they already allow it. But I still feel anxiety whenever someone knocks at the door.) that’s why I always freak out when someone’s knocking at the door. I believe that he felt my anxiety whenever there’s a stranger so up until now, he barks when there’s a visitor. But that’s all he does. Bark. And I feel guilty about that because I’m the reason that he’s like that. Now it’s time to correct things. Again, thank you for this.

My GSD likes to bark, specifically at men. Though I do like it because she’s like a guard dog for me (a short young woman) but I would like it if she didn’t bark at my guests or people that are close to me. In my family, she never barked at me, but have at my other family members (who’ve been there when she was a puppy) I’ve tried my best to socialize her at a young age, and she’s typically a very sweet girl who just wants belly rubs. It’s just first impression that she messes up. She’s also been getting very protective of me and her territory (my yard and house.) I will definitely try to do this training with my GSD!

Thanks for the video! We have a rescue who is like this. Has Lupo gotten better over time with this training? Do you think he’ll ever get to a place where he doesn’t have to go through this process when strangers enter the home? We’re trying to anticipate and set realistic goals for ourselves around behavior modification so we don’t get too discouraged with things.
@MicheleGauler3 жыл бұрын
We also have a rescue who behaves like this so I too would be interested in knowing what our realistic outlook is… she goes crazy whenever anyone comes near me or us, also outside our home, whenever we settle somewhere, park bench, picknick blanket, café. She barks and lunges at people and will not stop until we remove her from the situation. I’m really hoping that this will get better, she’s only been with us for four months and she’s a year old.
@solideomusical3 жыл бұрын
It is just my opinion but given the proper training I would expect those behaviors to diminish but not disappear altogether. I would expect it to become less of an issue with training and as the dog matures and *comes to trust you more.* It may sound cliché- but work on building a relationship with your dog.

This is the kind of dog that I would likely hand his leash over to the stranger as soon as they barked/growled. (obviously not with a bite history or serious concerns over biting). Then the stranger would walk the dog and ask for a sit or some type of obedience. That and or 2 leashes on the dog, one in your hand and you hand her one as well. I’m living with a roommate that has a female german shepherd and it’s a nightmare. I tried giving her treats, spent a couple of hours with her talking her softly to see if she comes to me but all she does is bark at me all the time. After I ignore her for a while she stops but she then comes back and starts barking again. It seems she is afraid of me for whatever reason (she didn’t grow up with any trauma). I’m a 25 yr old man with big complexion so maybe that intimidates her but man it hurts my soul since I adore dogs with all my heart and just like to play with them for hours at times. Any tips, or I can’t really do anything and the training has to be on the owner’s side? Edit: It’s been 4 months like this btw.

If you train them to do this though, would they still guard you if someone broke in? Or would they expect treats from the intruder? My dog barks a bit too much but I do expect her to protect me and guard the home.

Our main issue is the visitors - they don’t do as they’re told!

I need to have you try my dog in his house or yard. He goes red line where I'm not sure throwing treats will work. When he was about six months, this behavior started, and we had guest offer him treats, but as he got older (14 months now) he doesn't appear interested. Outside in public, he's fine with strangers, it's just when at home or settled with the family somewhere. Do you think it has to do with dominance/protection issues with the rest of the family, as I am the only one who takes him out daily?

he barked when the treats ended . either barking for more or complaint?

Wont the treats be reinforcing bad behavior?

my dog barks as soon as he hears a vehicle pulling up outside and people getting out of it, even next door at the neighbors. He goes on guard when anyone who isnt my mother, my sister, or myself come through the front door, even my aunt who lives with us he'll bark at her when she comes back from going somewhere. At one point he started nipping at people we've let into the house when they get too close to my mother so ive resorted to getting a muzzle for when he gets to that point. he's completely fine with them if they are outside but once they come inside he's all "how dare you trespass into my domain".

Sooo...what if you have a dog that's not food-motivated?

Hi, I live in a place where people constantly throw poisonous foods outside and i am teaching my dog to never eat from the ground, is there another way of introducing the dog to guests?
