I watched Wayne Goss years ago and he said the tools used were more important than the makeup used. This appears to hold true in my opinion.
@RaelNikolaidis11 ай бұрын
I have two suggestions to add- when a powder product develops a film or glaze on top, use a clean disposable eyebrow spoolie to gently brush the film off. A spoolie is so much more delicate than using a spatula which can gouge your eyeshadow and you don’t use pressure which can compact the product. Second, when I want to help out an eyeshadow blend, I use my Hourglass Dim Light powder. I dab a clean brush in the Dim Light face powder and blend out the matte shadow. The finely ground mica helps your eyeshadow to blend beautifully without changing the tone or value of the shadow or making it appear sparkly. Any translucent powder that has a bit of mica should work just as well. And it works much better than a matte face powder. Mica is irregular in shape and harder than soft talc, so it literally lifts the reluctant matte eyeshadow pigment up just the tiniest bit and fluffs it out. Will fix a choppy matte powder blush too. Anywho, love you! 😊

TY Marlena😅 I really needed this!
@MaeMae-shagrin8 ай бұрын
That’s what she suggested to do also, spooly, spatula, you can use a paper clip anything to scrape off a thin layer. It’s called hard pan and it’s just meant to scrape off the top layer that’s become a hard surface you can’t get past to get to the layer beneath. It’s not nearly as complicated as you are making it.😂❤ Some baked products actually come with a film over top because they break so easily transporting it, like the Elf baked highlighters that beauty influencer Ms created a craze over. People bought them and were so disappointed because it wouldn’t pick up any product on the brush and it was because they deliberately had put a thin film over it to keep it from shattering before it got to the consumer. You can also create hard pan by spraying your brush with a facial mist or water then dipping into a powder or putting your damp sponge directly into your pressed powder. Alcohol I know they say to use to repress powders but that too can cause hard pan or your entire powder to be ruined. If you do use alcohol, you only need to mist it a slight bit not soak it in alcohol like you’d see in the sanitizing and repressing videos.

I have very oily eyelids and my holy grail for eyeshadows is: PREP + PRIME 24-HOUR EXTEND EYE BASE and I add Mac PAINT POT on top and my eyeshadow does not move from 7 am until 9-10 pm when I usually take my makeup off. I've tried soooo many primers and this is the only combination that works for me.
@Chihiro3333311 ай бұрын
Very oily eyelids here too, and the struggle is real! 😅 I also use the Mac primer, but put powder on top. Works fairly well. I need to touch up the eye makeup sometimes in the middle of the day, though. Interesting that you put the paint pot on top! I will certainly try that. 😃 Thank you for sharing!

@@Chihiro33333 I've been doing my makeup like that for the past 8 months and it's been amazing ! I used to use the Too Faced shadow insurance with paint pot on top, but I think switching it to the Mac primer with paint pot on top was a smart choice !

Ooh yes, I can confirm that the combo primer + paint pot is incredibly effective! Your eyeshadow WILL last the entire day. I did that for many years. I don't need that level of priming now, as my eyelids are not as oily anymore.

Every day is excessive for cleaning- I usually do once a week every Sunday night. For face brushes, I have 2-3 of the brushes I use daily and will switch out after 1-2 uses, then get clean one only because my skin breaks out SO easily

Great tips! Another one, don't sleep in your makeup. I get it! Sometimes it's a late night, and we're tired, but we've got to clean our makeup off. We can actually develop makeup allergies by sleeping in mascaras, shadows, and makeup. Have fun with the tips! Xoxo💋

This video is just night and day from the quality of content we get on TikTok and other short form these days. Please keep these coming, Marlena ❤!

Actually, the first eyeshadow primer was through AVON. I remember thinking what the hell, now we need a primer for the eyes. I was not sold on this because I had been doing my makeup for years before this came out. So I refused to try shadow primer for about 5 more years after this. Finally, they were everywhere, so I decided to try. They really do help to make shadows pop. But one needs to find ones that dry down really fast for them to work for my eyes because of creasing. I also find that most shadow sticks work really awesome for all-day wear if put under powder shadows. Thank you, Marlena, such amazing advice.
@mariellazavala7211 ай бұрын
Hi ! Is there a drugstore affordable eye primer that you use ? That you can rely on ? Whenever I do my moms eyeshadow, it always creases ( she has creases on her lids & they’re kind oily lids as well) and the colors never stay. They tend to fade away.
@jenniferrogerson933811 ай бұрын
@mariellazavala72 elf has some amazing eye primers and really primers in general. They have a puddy primer line, which is awesome. Also, if you get a matt shadow stick from Rimmel scandalous eyes. Maby, one closer to her skin color would work nicely. They dry down really nice and shadow blind beautifully into the cream shadow.
@onestep2dee11 ай бұрын
@@mariellazavala72Milano also has an affordable eyeshadow primer. I remember when I used Clinique exclusively, they had a product called “touch base” for eyeshadows. It really was pretty good. But I had to switch to a more hard core eyeshadow like Mac Paint Pots. Then that stopped working, probably because I couldn’t use it fast enough even though I used makeup every day. So I’ve switched my primers out over the years. My current fave is the Ulta Beauty matte eyeshadow primer. It’s very affordable.

Clinique makes some nice satin formulas. Not a whole lot in the realm of bright colors but a lot of great options for trans shades to use w/other unique shades/formulas. I've got a lot of small palettes as GWP too.

I have been trying to do makeup looks with darker colors lately and none of them have looked quite right. I was thinking I should start with the lighter shades. For me this makes the most sense to try next. I haven't been having issues until now. I always put powder on my eyelids even if I don't do eyeshadow. I just love the matte smooth look it gives. Angelica Nyqvist started her own brand Singe Beauty and her brushes are very nice.

This is so helpful, Marlena! Wish I learned all this 20 years ago!😂 I’d of had a lot less bad makeup days. Also I wanna thank you so much for these types of videos, educating us on ingredients and allergies to said Ingredients. For the longest time, I’m talking years and years I would have the worst itchy and irritated eyes and I had no idea what was causing it. I knew it was a makeup product, but never thought it could be certain dyes because of the ingredients to get those colors. I went thru thinking it was an eye serum or cream, to a mascara brand the certain mascaras to eyeliners, to brands of shadow palettes… then I learned from you about how some purple, red and pink tone shadows are made with crushed beatles and that was the allergy I was unknowingly struggling with all these years. Then I got on the bare minerals train of natural, healthy makeup and my face would itch and get really irritated, turned out to be the bismuth oxychloride in the makeup said to be the healthiest, best made by the earth , safe for sensitive skin. I learned the matte version they came out with did not have this ingredient and that was why I didn’t have problems with that one from all the others. No one else ever warned people of this, and if you get overheated, sweat and start getting itchy and irritated, it’s the bismuth oxychloride you also are allergic to in products. Marlena saved me many more years of complete cluelessness as to what was causing all these flare ups I was having.

RE: color order for eyeshadow application For those of us using a sticky primer, if you don’t add a powder on top to help ease blending (like Marlena suggests), the primer will really grab and hold the first shadow you apply. Keep that in mind. For that reason, sometimes I will use my small, precise brush to add my darkest shade first when using a sticky primer, and then I’ll go in with the lighter shades. Tbh i don’t do this unless I’m going for a bold look. My everyday looks are Smokey and soft, so I typically go in with my medium or light shade first and put that over most of the crease and outer lid, then I blend the edges with the softest shade, then I add depth and my optional shimmer on the inner lid.

What lip product/shade are you wearing? It is beautiful! Also, is there a eyeshadow primer/base that you would recommend for controlling oil but not necessarily grippy? I cannot figure out eyeshadow for the life of me, it makes me very sad. It settles in the creases of my eyes (i believe maybe because of oils), yet i think i have noticed primer grabbing and making patchy. I have used Urban Decay eyeshadow primer, and MAC paint pots. Thank you for your videos!

This was interesting and reminds me that everything doesn’t work for everyone. I have sensitive skin and sensitive lids. There are some ingredients I'm sensitive to. I wash my brushes after each use. I use eyeshadow primer. Sometimes, I also use a shadow base on top of my eyeshadow primer. My eyeshadow isn't patchy. Sometimes, I apply shadow light to dark. Other times, I apply shadow dark to light. I usually don't use a shadow to blend out another shadow, I simply blend out a shadow, apply a shadow next to it, then blend where the two overlap. I do talk a lot throughout my videos and explain why I do things the way I do and I encourage viewers to experiment and find what works best for them. Thanks for this video.
