The foragers in packages will drift when there is no open brood. If you give a little open brood, the population won’t drop so dramatically. I figured that out. The older foragers aren’t necessarily dying. They are more than likely drifting to a colony very close with open brood. You will see a noticeable difference in package installs when you add just a chunk of comb with open brood. Try it in a package and compare with & without but don’t put too close. The queen I bought from you recently came incredibly quick & well packaged. Good size and healthy. I will buy from you again when I need a queen.

I had two of the first Barnyard Bee packages this year and we didn’t see any major reduction. Our marked queens that came with the packages immediately went to laying great patterns and we are probably on our second generation of brood now. I was very happy with my packages . My son absolutely loves how easy it is to find the marked queens .

You just happen to be looking at the comb and not the frame. She appears ready to jump ship! She was outside the bottom of the wooden frame.

Yeah David queen was on the bottom of the frame at around 3:02 just kind of hanging out.

Shit mine EXPLODED! Tons of bees! Only about ten bee deaths and I let them sit in the house for a day. Have seen them carry off two bees watching the last two days. Pretty cool to see their “ funeral” procession. One bee even covered up his bee buddy w leaves. 😢

When making a nuc, how long can they stay queenless , and can you add a queen in there 3 day later

Hey Dave- Question for you: I have a Barnyard Bee queen that overwintered and was mite-free going into fall... She still looks great, but there is not much brood. I gave them a fondant patty in December; it was gone by February and I replaced it. In mid-March there was lots of pollen and nectar, so I removed the feed. But still the colony just hasn't taken off. My other six hives have exploded; but two had been usurped by Killer Bees and I had to knock them down to nothing and re-queened on April 13. I'm thinking of putting some syrup in a rapid round to see if that will kick-start it... WOULD YOU BE BRUTAL AND RE-QUEEN, OR WOULD YOU GIVE HER A FEW MORE WEEKS? She is the only Italian in my Apiary right now, and she is gentle to a fault. Let me know, please.

Yes feed, and if possible put in a Donner frame of capped brood from another Colony minus the bees. Just shake them off. Sometimes the increase will help her get numbers back up, and hopefully she will increase production. Only put one to one ratio of sugar water. Not two to one.

Next time you need to put a queen extruder down and only let the worker bees go in and out till she gets established and starts laying lotta people put packages in the next day there bees are gone because there’s nothing to keep them there
