And just an fyi toyota kids.... You CAN run the timing belts on these far beyond 90k miles. went 75k OVER the recommended 90k service on my 5vzfe. when i pulled the belt to change a leaky water pump the belt looked great and none of the rollers were bad. So if you're on a tight budget and putting off this $1,000+ service on your 5v just know that most likely the belt won't snap but keep a good eye on your coolant level and temps so you don't blow a head gasket.

How many years did you push it? Would you say it's more of a time factor and not so much a mileage? It would be good coin every two years if you wheel it 45k per annum

@@efil4kizum my trucks previous owner did the T-Belt/ water pump service at 200k. I purchased the truck with 305k and don't know exactly how much time passed until i did it at around 375k. i wouldn't go 10 years in between or nothing crazy like that but i bet 5 or so years is fine. My old belt looked so good i kept it as a spare just in case.

When I see the shape of that waterpump, that's exactly where I'd expect the fluid to dribble out.

Never really trusted gates kits for Toyota applications. Aisin all the way and you'll have no problems. Some of the bearings have been shown to be low quality in the new pulleys. Belt complaints also. Seems they source the parts from different suppliers. All for the USA but for reliability you need to go original oem provider.

Same here, I stay away from Gates, Dayco and Contitech and other brand cheap timing kits. Aisin and GMB are the way to go.

Given the time and labor cost/complexity to replace the timing belt, buying a high quality kit is worth it

Very common for people to shortcut a timing belt job by NOT doing the water pump as well. Just a heads up to anyone thinking of buying a 3rd gen 4Runner!

I noticed my coolant was getting low and it was determined to be leaking from my water pump. After filling it a couple of times it appears to not be getting low anymore. Can a gasket reseal itself? What would cause it to no longer leak? I was about to get it replaced but am now holding off.

Would you also do what I believe to be the camshaft seals (they just call them seals in the kit), and when and why or why not? Thank you.

The water pump on my 2018 4Runner with only 67k on it is leaking. Is it common for them to fail this early?

Probably better to delay the job then go with a cheap timing belt kit.

5W30 every 5k miles. Personally I use full synthetic on all of my vehicles, however, as long as you stick to 4-5 thousand miles or 6 months, whichever comes sooner you will no problems using conventional oil, rather than synthetic. Whichever brand oil you decide to use is completely up to you. However, I use Mobil1 because that’s what Toyota repackages as their official Toyota branded oil. If the engineers at Toyota prefer Mobil1 and I can get it cheaper by buying a bottle that has a Mobil1 label rather than a Toyota I will.
