You're one of the few that has shown how to properly install the tensioner and shown the proper belt position on the crank in video 2. I've seen many videos where the installer fought the belt after fully installing the tensioner.

Thanks for the instructional. Took me 10 hours thanks to 2 bicycle trips to the parts store and a 1 hour round trip to another Town because the first water pump had a line for an oil cooler and mine doesn't. No leftover parts and your tips were great. Only wishtown knew how to play it in reverse when putting everything back together.

There is an easier way. Takes about an hour. Losen alternater and power steering belts 1st. Remove the fan mount bolts and wiggle fan off, then remove the pulleys. Next losen the tensioner on the bottom pulley between the AC, then remove the pulley. This allows you to replace any of the belts. This also allows you to access timing belt cover and water pump, ReAssembly is just a revers process. Warning. place a towel above the skid plate and below the pulleys to catch any bolts or sockets you may drop in the process. This method does NOT require removal of the skid plate , radiator or fan cowling.

Got you. I've been thinking about swapping a different engine into this truck. I'm kind of sick of the 3.4 liter. It has no low-end torque and sucks when it paired with the 5-speed. Reliable engine! But no torque. Also mine has low compression on cylinder number 5.

NoNonsenseKnowHow - have you tried the supercharger on the 3.4? I have one on my 01 Tacoma and well I would recommend trying one out. I also had a supercharger on my 98 3.4 Tacoma along with headers and flowmaster exhaust. That thing had some great power, enough for me anyway.

I was at my local Napa store getting brakes for my Tacoma and found some mulehead penetrating oil it’s kinda pricey but every thing I have sprayed it on has came apart with ease I was amazed. I had a pair of pliers that were rusted shut and sprayed a little on them and after a few seconds they were freed up like new. I don’t promote many products but I think this one does what it says it will do.

I had replaced the timing belt on my 4Runner a decade ago but needed a refresher and this video was quite helpful as I soon need to do the timing belt again. For the water pump I used a gasket dressing (Hylomar Universal Blue) with the metallic gasket that came with the Aisin water pump. Hylomar is a non-setting, non-hardening sealant. I guess I'll see how the joint has held up when I replace the water pump again. On a side note I am astonished to see so much rust on a 2003 engine. Perhaps something to do with the East coast and salt that gets used in winter time.

I was on rockauto looking as WP/TB kits for the 5vz. I noticed that kits were available for some years, for example a 2000, and the same exact kit was unavailable for different years, for example a 2002. I'm pretty sure there all the same right? I'm looking at an Aisin kit for a 4runner.

At around 8:03, you mentioned something like: "Provided, if you have a manual trans, no problem - put this thing in gear, brakes, parking brakes." I'm still learning about manual trans, but if I were to put it into 1st, should that crank shaft NOT turn? I had it in first with parking brake, yet when I tried to loosen nut, the crankshaft still turned (It turned maybe 45 degrees before I gave up on that method as I didn't know if I was ruining something and then just went with your starter method). Does that mean I have a worn clutch plate?

I was able to get the back tensioner bolt out with extensions from underneath, but no way can I install it without taking that AC bracket off.

Great video!!! I did my water pump and the time belt when I was putting on the time belt the R-cam shifted to the left a little so I rotated it clockwise back into position would that set the time off

Without seeing exactly what you're talkin about it's hard to give you an accurate answer. The timing marks on the cams should be lined up perfectly with the timing marks on the belt and shields. And then if you rotate the engine 2 turns clockwise, the marks on the cams should be lined back up with the marks on the back shield plates.

I've heard early Tundras are notorious for their frames rusting in half, and I noticed I'm seeing a lot of rusty spots under this truck. May I ask where you live? I'm considering buying one, but I'm trying to determine if it's from too much road salt (east coast) or is this just how severe the problem is on all Tundras from the early 2000's.

I'm in Eastern Pennsylvania. Yes major rust problems on them. Mine is pretty rusty, but I undercoat it once a year and that seems to help out

I don't see a reason why it wouldn't. From what I thought, all 3.4s are the same. Maybe a difference in the water pump or belt. I'm not sure

Here's a question for you. My timing belt and water pump were done at 200k, now my car is at 230k and the water pump is leaking. Is it possible to just remove the upper timing cover and fan and pump just to get a new gasket on it? Thanks.

No, the entire timing belt needs to come off to do it properly. Surprised to hear it's leaking. It might not be the gasket also. It could be the internal seal on the pump. Could try throwing some leak stop in your system, but that would kind of be a last resort. Not going to lie though, my pump was recently dripping a little bit and I threw some stuff in there and it's been good since. Which is kind of embarrassing as a mechanic, but I sunk My tundra in the river and I haven't been eager to put much time and money back into it since that escapade.

On my own truck I used the Dayco kit. The more expensive one. I would rather stick with a name brand. I've used the cheap for kits without a problem before though. The best thing would be going with Factory OEM parts from the dealer. But that's a little pricey.

How do I know if my water pump is bad? All I hear is like small knocking coming from the center motor

Usually you will see coolant leaking from the center front

NoNonsenseKnowHow could be that then. My truck heated on me once due to no coolant and ever since it drains it fast. Ima Have to look for some leaks. Thanks for the fast reply

Sorry I should have been more clear about that. If you position the breaker bar as shown in the video then you just turn the key to the start position for a Split Second

There are really a lot of variables though. I've done them in as little as three hours and some have taken me seven or eight. It really depends on how smooth things go

It must not be timed properly and a valve is hitting the piston.

Timing right and I didn't think you could hit valves on non interference engine but I do think my teeth are 193 and saw the I need 191 teeth will that do it also I have been stuck on this for a month and can't figure it out about to pull motor and replace but that shit cost money so

Wish I could make a video cause wasn't doing it when bump started crank bolt off unless somebody tried to start it not knowing belt was off cause it broke off when driving

Just so you know, the puller in the link doesn't have bolts long enough and you'll have to get some M8 x 1.25 x 4.5" long. The bolts that came with it are way too short. Kinda shitty but whatever

Really? That's crazy. 90k is the way to go in my opinion. Only Vehicles I've seen with recommending at 60k are Hyundai's. I'll have to take a glance at my owners manual though and see what mine says

As a Toyota technician I recommend everyone to NOT work on an engine that has rust & corrosion. This job could of been so much smoother . TOYOTA uses the best hardware. But Rust ruines all
