A year ago I had to perform CPR on my dog after she went unconscious and essentially died right in front of me. I never learned CPR for dogs and improvised in the moment. I gave her CPR lying her on her back like with a human at a tempo of around 140bpm (I knew I had to do it faster than with a human since she is a smaller animal and took a guess as to how much faster). It actually worked and completley brought her back to life after a minute or two of chest compressions. Unfortunately 30 minutes later when we were at the hospital, her heart stopped again and this time nothing could be done to save her. Although we still ended up losing her I am happy I was able to give her an extra 30 minutes of life. She even walked around and was waging her tail while saying hi to another dog when we first arrived at the hospital. If I ever need to do this again I will now do it the way you have taught.

I learned this and had to execute it at a park. Its no joke that you may have to break ribs. If you are not exhausted you aren’t doing it right. And yes, be prepared to get saliva and dog snot in your mouth. It is better to break some ribs than to have the dog spend time without oxygen to the brain. Depending on the size of the dog you have between 2 to 4 minutes until brain damage occurs. And if yours administering CPR in a car never do it on a seat. It must be a flat surface for the heart pumps to count. And always lay them on their right side and push their elbow towards their chest.

Dude I revived My Little Chihuahua twice in a row in the course of 2 hours I inflated his lungs like a balloon and then I push all that phlegm and mucus he had until his lungs were empty and then I filled his lungs with air again like a balloon. there was also a lot of smacking in between too. 7 hours later and the vet has yet to call me to authorize cpr if he stops breathing again. I think he'll make it, only need to wait for the meds to clean him up. I love you Buddy!!!😭🐕💓

I was just at my mother in laws farm with my wife, her sister came over with her dog and out of no where the dog collapsed, was breathing frantically, and having these crazy spasms. Not like a seizure but maybe a blood clot, when i felt his heart stopped i tried to bring him back to but it didn't work. It hurts and i get what you're going through but you did nothing wrong. Tragedy just happens unfortunately, nothing you could have done more so than what you did. We love our pets, and they are family, but when things like that happen don't blame yourself. My condolences to you, I'm glad i found this video to teach me more!

My ‘purebred AKC” white Golden Retriever was so inbred its laryngeal folds are almost completely paralyzed shut. It took 5 different vets and a large university vet school to find the problem after $6,000 of tests. My dog had been unable to walk 20 yards without falling down. It was only after I said to a vet “Get a chest x-ray!” that they found a very enlarged heart pushing on the windpipe. We were sent to the vet emergency room at the university. With paralyzed layrngeal folds he has a terrible time panting to get rid of excess heat. He’ll lie and pant>200 times a minute and his gums turn blue and this is when he is lying on a cold tile floor at the vets The ONLY treatment in vet journals is to suture the folds to the inside sides of the throat to leave a permanent opening. But then he might aspirate food or water into lungs....which is deadly. I keep him at home in a freezing home A/c at 56 degrees and a cool mist nebulizer. It’s in the 90s here so even just going out to pee causes him severe exhaustion. So even though I am an ICU RN and Nurse Practitioner I had to learn dog CPR on a 100# retriever. I have had to breathe for him once when as a puppy will--he took off after some chattering squirrels! He collapsed after 100 feet up iin the woods and I had to breathe in couplets ten times. He had a faint femoral arterial inside pulse under his rear leg. The REASON for this congenital defect? Inbreeding to get that white cream color! We’re ruining dogs breeding for “Designer dogs!” I can never leave him! Vets are seeing this for the first time and it’s in “white” Golden Retrievers and older yellow labs. It progressives to muscular wasting and paralysis of his back legs. This inbreeding MUST stop! Sires having litters w their daughters, dams having litters with their offspring. Vets are seeing fatal congenital defects especially with disgner dogs. Many times half the puppies in a litter of cross bred dogs is euthanized as they aren’t “pretty enough.” God did a good job making Golden Retrievers and labs and now we’re screwing with natural selection. Both types used to have a one in ten chance of dying of cancer. Now it’s one in 1.6 pups!! This has to stop and the worst offenders are wealthy folks and celebrities who use dogs as fashion accessories.

Pro tip. Get rid of your nylon collars. These collars can get interlocked and twisted as dogs play. My brother's pit mix just died because he got entangled with his cane corso pack mate. By the time our dog watcher noticed, The smaller dog was already dead. The sitter was able to save the Cane Corso at least. Tycho Could've been revived with CPR probably though if the sitter had thought about it.

Does this work on little dogs too? I have a small Jack Russel and I m thinking that I *maybe* dont need to "break his ribs" to get it to work. Am I wrong ? I want to do it the best way possible. Do I need to "feel exhausted" while doing this movement to be sure Im doing it with enough strenght ? Do I have to follow the steps in the exact same way for every kind of dogs ? Or are there exceptions?

they will not go to jail if they are not the ones causing harm, you are allowed to call 911. if an animal is in danger you must call your local emergency vet, not 911

Pushing down that hard...wouldn't It hurt the animals rib cage?
@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1
@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 8 жыл бұрын
There is a risk you can damage their rib cage, which is why you would only resuscitate your own dog, or ensure you obtain permission from the owner first. if you don't do anything then the dog is dead. As with humans, CPR does work and does save lives.
@globalgears5175
@globalgears5175 7 жыл бұрын
Moody Bloom I honestly don't understand your logic. I mean no offence and I hope I don't come across as offensive but SERIOUSLY? Hurt it's rib cage? So what are you suggesting, not perform CPR and just allow to dog to die so not to hurt it's ribs? Come on.
@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1
@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, but please ensure you have permission to resuscitate the dog as under the law dogs are the property of their owners. CPR does work and you can save your dog's life, but to do it effectively it is possible you may damage their rib cage.

This is wrong... You should never approach a dog or any animal, or even humans from behind. You should let the injured animal see you and hear you and see that you're not going to hurt them. What is more, you shouldn't check the pulse. It's a waste of time, especially because regular people usually don't even know how and where to check it.
@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1
@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 2 жыл бұрын
The advice you give is correct for human first aid, but not for dogs. For pets you do check for a pulse and this is why people should familiarise themselves with this information in advance and not rely on it in an emergency

Sorry, but I AM going to preform CPR on any animal who needs it, regardless on whether or not their owners say I can or not. Animals are their OWN separate beings, who should be allowed the right to be saved. Not all people care about their pets, and would easily let their dog die, with no remorse at all. If those dogs could speak, they WOULD consent to being saved. Also, once the victim goes unconscious, they automatically consent to CPR, (this ONLY applies to CPR, NOT sex/r@pe), so the second that dog goes unconscious, ANYONE should be allowed to preform CPR to save their life. I am NOT just going to stand back and watch an animal die, JUST BECAUSE their owners suck. Sorry, but not sorry. I like animals more then people, so i'm saving those who need help.
