Man saves a choking Jack Russell terrier with Heimlich maneuver

Electrician Joshua Aspey, 22, sprang into action when Sally, his Jack Russell, choked on a piece of cheese and started to fit. The former lifeguard, from Watchet, Somerset, used skills he learned for his poolside job and thumped Sally on the back and chest to dislodge the blocked food. He saved the ten-year-old canine's life - and the drama was captured on a CCTV camera set up in the kitchen of his parent's house.

I saw this video a few months ago after I had to do the Heimlich on my dog when he was choking. That experience was very different, maybe mine could still get a little air, but he stayed conscious and frothing and trying to retch and I could only just reach him so Heimlich was the fastest, easiest option. Today, he choked again. This time was very much like this video. I'd even commented beforehand, "I hope he remembers to chew so he doesn't choke." I was about 15-20 feet away and unaware he was choking until he collapsed and seized exactly like the dog in this video. I was able to manually clear his throat and he came around pretty dazed (and probably wondering where his treat went, as our other dog was helping herself to everything I cleared) and it was absolutely terrifying. But he lives to see another day. I'm still an emotional wreck. He's 14, I think he literally bites off more than he can chew as he tries to keep pace with our other dog. Lesson learned - he's getting nothing that he can't safely swallow whole. If I'd been just 5 minutes later coming home, we definitely would have lost him today.

@@lokomotive28 yes. I seen a different method where they try to dislodged the food by sliding your fingers underneath their throat and pushing upwards. But when my dog was choking I panicked and this worked for him. The food flew right out.

this isn't heimlich maneuver. he was very lucky that it worked. if your dog is choking on a bone, doing this could actually injure their throat, cause bleeding and make them choke on their own blood. just look up how to properly dislodge stuff they swallow instead of doing this. shaking the dog back and forth is bad as well.

This happened to my pug, he was eating ham one second and the next one he just collapsed, I thought it could be choking but didn't know what the haimlich manouver for dogs was so I tried to mimick what you do on humans and started pushing his belly with my hands. I don't think he expelled the food out his mouth but he started breathing again and acting normally.

If your dog is choking normally you should lay it on it's side and do compression on the widest part of ribcage then put your head in the mouth and try to clear out the object, also you can do it the same as on humans but also put your hand into it's mouth and try to remove the object it will not usually come flying out

Alll dogs do when choking because If the dog is unable to get air past the item in its trachea, it will collapse or fall over and become unconscious due to being unable to breathe hope this helps
