If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what your dog’s food might taste like. You might even wonder if your dog cares that they eat the same food everyday, basically for their entire life. How do they get so excited for the same old boring dry dog food, day in and day out?
Well this week we put Ben’s stomach and will to live to the test, by feeding him only dog food for a full 48 hours, while we cooked gourmet meals for each of our two shaggy pooches.
Did Ben like it? Did he puke? Will he keep eating dog food now that the challenge is over? All these questions and more will be revealed…

When I was a kid, my cousin and I ate a box of charcoal dog biscuits... They were good! Then when I worked in a pet store as a teenager, we sold bulk food and treats. People would ask which was was good, and we would pull a piece, chew it up, and say “I like this one.” Always got the sale!

After seeing the absolutely worthwhile last part of this video I did feel bad for laughing at Ben's facial expressions especially the initial ones while eating that dry dog food. It was unintentional it was just exactly how I imagined my reaction would be (not that I'll be confirming that anytime soon 🤢😳). I was given a complimentary bag of what the rescue group was feeding my dog to help the transition to her raw food and it is finally empty as she only got it for breakfast but I think (unlike Ben) a lot of dogs go on the smell and just inhale their food so quickly they don't even taste it. Thanks to both of you for highlighting the needs of shelters and rescue groups! 👍👍❤❤

🤣🤣🤣 That was fun! Several years ago I had the same question. What is it like to eat the same thing over and over again? I was feeding my dog a fairly expensive dry food. I tried this experiment for one day and after three meals felt like I was going to explode. The bloating was horrible and the following three days of constipation convinced me to have an honest conversation with my dog's veterinarian because there is no way my dog wasn't experiencing some of the same issues. She was the first vet to be frank with me and mention first, humans shouldn't eat dog food because there are ingredients in it that dogs can digest and we can't, second, dry food is pretty horrible for dogs. It really needs to be hydrated, otherwise it takes a lot more energy to digest and can create bowel inflammation, dehydration, constipation, teeth issues, allergy flare-ups, etc. After going into the specifics of how that all happens, she worked with me on creating a human food diet for my little buddy. I make large pots of food that I can eat throughout the week so from that point on I just made more of whatever, and he ate what I ate, all of it approved by two different veterinarians. Different combinations of leans meats, organ meats, vegetables, grains, even several seasoning herbs are 100% good for most dogs. I started buying in bulk and making chicken jerky and dehydrated veggies for his snacks. His energy level increased, his coat color and texture improved, and his breath was way less stinky. Plus, he stopped having constipation issues. For the last 10 years of his life, he ate what I ate. He lived to be 18, three years past the average life span for his breed. I felt good about keeping him healthy, and I know he felt better. Now, I know this is simply not feasible for many pet owners and I'm by no means trying to shame anyone. We do what we can, and ultimately just keeping them off the streets and out of the shelters is so much more important. But, if you can afford it, and are able to do it, give this a go! Not all vets will discuss a custom diet with you, but if you go to two or three and ask the same question, you'll find one that will help you build a complete diet for your pet. I found that the wholistic vets were way more open to these discussions.

All I could think of was the gas between Ben eating multiple types of dog food while the dogs ate human food and all of their bodies adjusted to the new, um, food. But I have to say, for all my years of watching, Ben has never skated better than when he was on dog food! And yes healthier dog food may be more expensive but they eat less of it because it’s not just meat dust, it has actual healthy ingredients. Thanks for showing everyone the shelters and all of the critters they care for. We donate to ours often and they can use old towels, kitten formula, cat litter especially when spring hits and it’s kitten season. I’m now thinking of every party I’ve gone to when someone thought they were tough for eating a piece of kibble when they had a buzz going. Ben will forever be the dog food 🤴. They just crowned some other dude in the UK. They got the wrong guy lol.

I fed my cats towards the end of your video and I totally understand the guilt in eating different food for every meal while our pets eat the same thing everyday. My oldest cat has never shown interest in other food but the two younger ones I'm sure would be delighted to try almost anything. I get the best quality food I can afford but still the guilt. You're a brave man Ben. I couldn't have done it. And Julie...I can't imagine what he smelled like. Hope you made him use public restrooms.

Question!: How do you guys handle the food issue in general. I just dumped out the pickle juice and ziplocked the pickles to fit in our 52Q fridge, and was wondering how other van lifers menu plan, store food for time, health and taste? I'm only asking people I've watched being healthy eaters. 😂 I hope you feel better after that dog food passed.

We do a weekly meal prep for dinners. We pick a protein and veggie and cook it all up on sunday and then tupperware it for the week. Breakfast we rotate between oatmeal, yougurt, and eggs so we dont have to keep a huge amount of any, just some of each. Dry goods we have some larger tupperware that stay up on a shelf so as soon as we get boxed items we just dump them into the tupperware and recycle the boxes immediately (granola, nuts, oatmeal, dog cookies, protein bars, etc). That cuts down on a lot of space. The fridge is tough sometimes with condiments but like you do with the pickles, we try to use our tupperware when we can because they stack nicely and help keep the fridge organized

I think we're going to have to step up the process of getting under the truck storage lockers, and put an ice chest in one for the fruit and veg, and those pesky condiments I can't cook variety without. Perhaps you guys could have a side hustle selling a cook book? (Minus the dog food, of course!) Okay, begging now, a van travel cookbook would be awesome! You could do meals by regions of boondocking and photos. Think about it!
