Appreciate you sharing your skills with everyone. You've given me a ton of confidence with my dog. Before I was nervous going into certain situations because I didn't know how she was going to react but now I know what to do when shit goes down. My family is super impressed with how well behaved my dog is.

The dog you are training looks 3 years old part Mastiff they can be aggressive by breeding but a mutt component should calm him down. I used to have a Chow Chow with mixed with Akita. When I first got him with my girl friend who wanted a chow, he was 3 years old completely untrained or loved previously never got walked, brushed or any attention. I heard about this abused dog and when I first saw him he was tied up and locked in the basement with not even a light on, no food or water and feces/urine around him and the stench. I said I was there to walk him because a mutual friend sent me. I brought some rope and when I walked him my girlfriend said no way she wanted him. I said if you think I'm taking him back there you're crazy and we took him home. Training him was very difficult but it was a work of love that brought him around. He lived to be 19 years old when he passed, I thought he'd live forever and I'm still sad to this day because I miss him so much still. He was my best friend all those years.

First comment on youtube eeek - Hey Joel, great video as per usual. Hoping for some advice on a fearful/nervous dog and what your approach is to working with dogs like this. I see fearful aggression, reactive to dogs/people from fear, but what about all around good tempered dogs who are just nervous/fearful of noises, objectcs like cars and so on. How do you get them to have more confidence and learn not to be so scared of the outside world (9months in age and did pretty much every bit socialisation going) Thanks for all your work - from the UK

Dogs look up to their human owners for guidance. Owners may unknowingly contribute to their dogs insecurity by rewarding unwanted behaviors in an attempt to soothe their fearful dogs. Without a strong leader, they may become unsure of the rules, and unsure of themselves. Learning how to lead your dog can ensure that he received the right message about what is and what isnt appropriate behavior. New animals should be introduced slowly in a neutral location, using positive reinforcement, and continuing your dogs normal routines. Techniques including behavioral modification, counterconditioning and desensitization can help your dog gain confidence and learn how to respond more appropriately to fearful situations. Becoming the leader your dog needs can help him to learn the rules and become less unsure of himself and his surroundings. This should also aply for people who work at a doggie daycare, or it might get worse. Even the dogs that are too much for ither dogs, need to learn good manners and respect if there are dogs who wants to be left alone. Build trust is so important. Dogs prefer to have a "leader" that is calm, cool and collected. (for different noises you can find videos on yt for desensitization to play in the background during the day) Anything from cars, doorbells, fireworks etc)

Joel, you’ve helped us so much with our puppy who is now nine months old! Your instruction has given us such control over our dog which has helped tremendously in teaching him basic obedience behaviors. Without correcting the leash reactivity, all the other things are for not! Can you please offer some help regarding what to do when you are giving a correction but the puppy just turns and barks at you, or tries to mouth and bite and wiggle all around. We are not sure how to make a correction when our floppy dog has decided to just lie on the floor and not get up. He’s such a sweet dog, but this part of his behavior has become extremely annoying and bothersome. We are trying to be the boss, but the biting is painful as he’s now 75 pounds. We don’t give in but…Help!!!

This was a good one I’ve been using it with my terrier when we go on walks to get him to stop trying to lunge at dogs in fenced in yards while we walk he is pretty much reactive to every sound outside so yesterday we had our roof done so I stood with him in front yard to hopefully desensitize him a little

Hey Joel. Love the videos. I wanted to give you a heads up about something. A good friend of mine was a breeder and AKC Bull Mastiff show trainer. He had to stop because of a pretty bad shoulder. Those leash yanks can really hurt if done continuously! Take care of yourself and do PT or get a good Chiro to avoid damage and chronic pain!
@caileykennedy94013 жыл бұрын
Haha ur worried about his body??? What about the dogs face!!! Gentle leaders are not a correction tool!!! He should be using a prong!!!! He can seriously hurt a dog doing this!!!!!
@jessicajacobs15003 жыл бұрын
@@caileykennedy9401 prongs are painful too. You do what works for you! I meant a dog pulling on your arm like that all the time …when walking or otherwise. My friend showed/bred bull mastiff’s so that would be a career hazard not a concern of the average person. You don’t usually need correction that much with a gentle leader. And a slight pull back to change the dogs attention is enough. Maybe an occasional correction for a truly disobedient dog is necessary.

Walking a couple of miles to get dogs more at ease with each other is for when they meet mom and dad's friends' dogs. Dogs they have to let in their house, and dogs they have to visit in the other's house. It's not for when you train general meetings.

Hellooooo! I have a question. My dog when he plays with other dogs tends to bark at them. Not in an aggressive way. I think he wants to make them run in order to chase them (he prefers to chase dogs rather than being chased). Also he is a mix breed probably border collie and English setter. Maybe its instinctual? Like herding? He hae never had a fight with another dog even when other dogs have attacked him. He is 9 years old and not socialised very well. Thank you in advance!

Joel, I used your loose leash walking method and for the most part, it worked but I did have issues and would like your opinion. The dog which is a 1 year old French bulldog really disliked the correction and turned around and started biting the leash. He kept the leash in his mouth for the first 10 minutes of the walk and wasn’t focused on walk.
@SteveWKk3 жыл бұрын
First of all, he's still only 1.......so patience is needed. But if he's acting like an ass, there should be NO walk. The walk only happens when he's behaving.

I find it very tiring to be so hyper vigilant about a dominant dog and how they might stare or rush up and start something with other dogs... I'm on dominant/fear aggressive dog #3 now, and we even started this one as a puppy, hoping he'd be more balanced since we raised him, but of course... Covid hit during the 9 month old and teenage growth time. No more classes or socialization for my extremely playful/energetic and dominant pup. Now, he's 2 and more like the dog in this video with other males- stares them down with scary eyes, starts something if they start something (or even when they don't)! I've read that if you neuter a dog they can actually become more aggressive with other males. So... since he's still intact, not sure if neutering will help or harm. Not sure what to do, except keep trying to socialize with other "nicer" dogs at dog park and correct, and hope we don't encounter other dominant dogs like this one! It's dicey who will be at the dog park, of course.
@ZEUS-eu7iy3 жыл бұрын
Joel, i notice you usually use the flat collar for corrections and very rarely use a prong?

real dog training is being able to teach a dog to be good by being its friend and not using a leash or a collar. be equal with them and show them kindness to calm them so they will want to submit to you and be your friend as well
@michael-lynn2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's great and kindness is great but every dog is different and kindness isn't going to train a dog to do what you want it to do. Also you may make friends with a dog but they may not be friendly to anyone else (dog or human) other than you, and your kindness isn't going to help that situation. Best to you.

Well as the devoted owner of an unneutered male chow I say gentle firmness is a must because he is an unforgiving little guy with a very long memory. But he is also a real little jerk and if he can walk.all over you he will. So sometimes he does get a solid correction for being a jerk. Chows by the way are super smart dogs and if they are feeling cooperative can learn anything very quickly and have amazing retention. I kind of adore them.
@susanal15273 жыл бұрын
i have a question about the gentle leader, i have heard that when they launch very hard at an other dog, it might hurt them very bad because of the head turn. like spine and muscles issues. is this possible? we have a gsd that is leash reactive and we have a prong collar because we can't hold him without it. my partner is walking him at night so he can walk calm but i would love to get to a point i don't have to mind the hour, the people and dogs around. he's a very bossy 1.5 year male and has attacked me (not extreme but bad enough) during walks because of the prong or just not getting what he wanted. the attacking me went over in taking the leash and fighting it. so that's kind of better. back to main question ; gentle leader can it hurt their neck in any way ? Btw i love your channel ! thanks for sharing your knowledge and all your great work Greetings from Belgium
@samcresp54403 жыл бұрын
It seems like your dog is redirecting frustration on you. He can’t pull/yank without a highly intense pressure from the prong, so he turns around and attacks you/the leash first. I hope y’all find the help you need
@chickenpollo94243 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can watch videos from the upstate canine academy channel, that teaches you a lot about how to correctly use the prong with your dog, and I’m sure I’ve seen lots of videos of him working with reactive shepherds
@vikingdogmanship3 жыл бұрын
Your only walking your 1.5 year old GSD a night? that needs to stop. How old was he when you got him and how did you end up in this situation?
@Flippokid3 жыл бұрын
Put a muzzle and a gentle leader on him. Then apply Joel's stop method, religiously, before you even go out the door. He's not ready to meet other dogs, he's not even ready to go outside if he doesn't respect you as the leader. I also heard that gentle leaders can hurt the dog's neck, but I don't know if it's true. I do know that I'd prefer some neck pain (and some cheek sores that my dog gets from it) to them biting or getting bit. If you do your yard work right, and gradually work up to meeting other dogs, they don't get to the point where they lunge so hard that it hurts them.

@BDTraining3 жыл бұрын
If he just wants to play then you don’t tug
@overkill10253 жыл бұрын
The "tug" is a correction. So you should use it to correct bad behavior. Wanting to play isn't bad behavior by itself. You as the owner need to be the one to draw the line on what's acceptable and what's not acceptable. For example, my pup gets corrected when she grows and lunges towards dogs she wants to meet. Deep down she wants play but she's not being appropriate about it. You don't want to be walking down the sidewalk with a dog that's growling and lunging. But just play bows and chases aren't a big deal.
