"Flying toddlers with bolt cutters" is one of the best ways to describe owning birds. I'd only add that it's like having a flying toddler with bolt cutters that will act like a toddler for their entire life, which can easily be 10 - 20 years or more depending on the species. They are a massive commitment and anyone thinking about owning one needs to keep that in mind and do a lot of research.
@AnonYmous-ow2eb2 ай бұрын
I'm sure most people already know this, but for any that don't know; depending on the species, that "or more" can be up to 80 years!

I love that sometimes when given a new object he does the little “what is this made of?” smacks with his beak, but never asks anything about it or brings up what it’s made of. Like, in learning how to identify things with his beak, it’s just part of his behavior now and sometimes he thinks to himself _gee, what IS this made of?_ and, once confirming it, is so confident he can proceed without comment. Cool stuff.
@NylaTheWolf3 ай бұрын
He asked "what's this?" before (in the "did this parrot just ask a question?" video). I've also seen him say what the material is or what the thing is after coming into contact with it or looking at it.

Imagine humans taking longer than the birds to figure out how it works 😂 And yeah love all the birds and hate to "rank" them, but the reason Apollo picks up more from the girls than they from him is because African Grays are the smartest of all parrots. They have the drive to learn and adapt. I used to have a Venezuelan Amazon and he was really sharp, but nowhere near an African Gray.
@miguelguillermo61593 ай бұрын
I'm Venezuelan and those birds are sharp, but I believe Apollo is just on another level. Maybe it's that they're more simple minded, and African Greys look for more complex challenges, like crows? Either way, amazing birds

The reward colours are quite close shades to table-top colours, and take a bit longer to differentiate. When the rewards are contrasted to their background colour, all of the birds see them immediately.

Greys are known for being "one-person" pets. They often prefer one person over any other, sometimes to the point of aggressively attacking "rival" humans. Does Apollo prefer one person?
@the_newt_nest4 ай бұрын
Dalton is definitely his human, but Apollo doesn't seem to regard her as a rival. Maybe since she's the model/rival when they train he has the same connection to her as he does to the girls.
@watchnpray2474 ай бұрын
@@the_newt_nest He seems to use Tori's voice more than Dalton's. That is consistent with my (limited) experience. They seem to prefer to adopt the voice(s) of the non-preferred person(s), which is interesting. Perhaps they are mimicking their perceived "rival" in order to "win" the preferred person (desired mate).

I noticed this in the PC build video: Apollo is applying the general shape of a bottle, to that of a screwdriver. In the aforementioned video, he said "a bottle?" when the screwdriver was near him, but when Tori gave him a plastic bottle, he immediately threw it back and refocused on the screwdriver. He was asking another question: what is this (the screwdriver) called? He did it again here when playing with the screwdriver. In context, he isn't asking for a bottle. He's asking if this is called a bottle. A good response would be to take the screwdriver as soon as he asks, get his attention, and say, "this called screwdriver", while saying the word slowly, then repeating the word and giving it back.

I had a female budgie that knew dozens of words and sentences and would make her own from words she knew. She was even bi-lingual (Spanish & English). I have two females now, one of which is starting to talk clearly. The other chirps the cadence and rhythm but doesn't say the words clearly. I don't think it's necessarily true that female budgies don't talk as well. It's a myth.
