Half the fun of watching these videos is trying to figure out what makes the dogs tick. And it's a lot easier than in real life because you can rewind and we maybe have a better angle on it. And it's extra fun because we can see often see the follow up sessions too.

Dude!! I just commented on your Instagram too but I have to say it again: I am currently learning a lot about training/behavior in vet school and we are just learning this WRONG. Purely positive reinforcement just DOES NOT CUT IT and I worry about future veterinarians not being able to point clients towards the best trainers (you) that can ACTUALLY help their dogs. The mentality of “just don’t touch it” or “just don’t bring it around other dogs” isn’t productive for anyone??? Like yea, there are times when that’s best but TRY to give your dog a well rounded life with the help of a trainer that truly knows how to communicate with your animals…. I tell all of my classmates about you because I think it’s so important for my community to know about the trainers that can provide more than “just let the behavior happen”. You and your fam are awesome and if I’m ever in CA I’m scheduling an appointment to see you 😂

I honestly couldn't agree more, I went to my vets as many people do (Im in the uk if that makes a difference) and pretty sure they only refer you to positive only trainers/behaviourists, plus many positive trainers shame balanced trainers. My vet behaviourist didn't give too much advice other than to keep her under threshold and talked allot about not overflowing her bucket (which is just impossible, she goes under and over threshold constantly on walks depending on what she's exposed to) and then put her on meds (fluoxetine). It's been a few months and the meds didn't help and she's now become more aggressive as opposed to just reactive and is showing side effects such as shaking and avoiding the car where she would never before and before when she was perfect with my sister in laws puppy she has now become reactive towards her. Really sad, I wish there was better info on balanced trainers too, so many people push the idea of positive only and that telling your dog no is abuse. I only started using balanced training methods maybe a month ago and wish I found it a lot sooner, it's already helped a ton, and I don't think I would have the issues I have now if I had known about it sooner. Purely positive reinforcement without a doubt just does not work for many dogs especially when it comes to behavioural problems

@@HWHY That's easy to answer, humans are not dogs and dogs know the difference and communicate differently with their fellow dogs. Dogs are not remotely capable of teaching dogs what humans can teach dogs. The way people can manipulate dog behavior is many times more effective even without violence.

@@nicoleglenn2872 I didn't really want to start a controversial conversation, I just wanted you to consider that most dog trainers change or adapt their views over the course of their careers and that ultimately a hybrid of all techniques is used. I've known PR trainers who work with water bottles and scary noises, but only after they've completed their training and are on the job. But there are also trainers who started hard and later became softer.

haha I'm definitely one of those people who speculates a lot. My guess here would be...she came into a space as an outsider. The longer she was there, the more comfortable she got, and the more comfortable she got, the punchier she got, till she was almost getting a little too big for her britches. I would have been concerned about adding a new dog to the mix that she would perceive as the new "outsider," especially an age-similar female who she thinks she could take in a fight. But I would have been interested to see how she would handle it.

My only added thought would be to work with her on a longer 10' leash in that setting. She's an untethered street dog who has learned to be good within 5' of the handler but needs to be tested and trained by distance. It requires more foot movement by the handler to be at the correct retrieve angle but would force distance training on the beagle/street-side of the dame. All in all she's a beautiful dog and the owners have the right training acceptance for your guidance. Great video.

Like you pointed out Joel her personality is a little bold (pit in there?), combined with a history of being put into survival situations and possible puppy mill makes for a touchy dog. This is the classic selective dog, where owners will have to always watch her in the presence of other dogs. We also didn't see her get with the bad dogs (high energy, also big sniffers, bold dogs, barking dogs, etc), and she will likely exhibit more behavioral tendencies with them. The owners will need to reinforce commands and listening to be well in control of her, and she should do alright. These complicated cases are great because I too have a complicated dog and seeing dog behavior in action helps a lot. Thank you!

This video taught me a lot about my dog, she is also a rescue beagle mix about the same size. She's very sweet most of the time and knows how to properly correct other dogs. But sometimes if another dog is getting up in her business too much she can turn quickly like the dog in this video. After watching a lot of your videos I believe someone in the past used an e collar on her and that causes her seemingly "random" behavior. I think she may have had puppies in the past, as well. She was almost 3 when I adopted her but wasn't spayed yet. And she smells a lot and marks like this dog. This is the type of stuff that only videos can help to identify these things in my own dog. Thanks, Joel!!

She is a 'bold dude'. I think she's not fearful, definitely acts like a dog that was left intact into adulthood, idk if it's dominance or just extreme confidence lol. I think she needs more time and interactions with other dogs and corrections when she gets to be too much, before it actually escalates. I think she's got potential to be able to have some doggy friends with some work and guidance. Lucky owners who found your channel and could go to you in person. I'm jealous! And now they are KZbin stars lol. One of my favorite things about this channel are the people just wanting to do so much for their dogs in order to have happy lives for the dogs and ultimately themselves too! Dogs are very attentive to their owners. If you talk to your dog in a gentle tone of voice and say, \"He's a good boy,\" or \"He's so cute,\" he will be relieved and happy to see you. Many dog owners have had the experience of wagging their tails in delight when their dog was quietly sitting beside them. Some studies have shown that dogs can read our emotions through the tone and intonation of our voices. They don't like to be yelled at in a high-pitched or low voice, which is the exact opposite of a gentle voice. When expressing your affection to your dog, try to use a bright and gentle tone.🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐕🐕🐕🐕😻😻😻😻💋💋💋💖💖💖💖💖

We have a 10 month Huskita bitch that just loved to pull us on walks! Two days later on the leash pops and she's getting so better thanks to your direct straight to the point videos. I'll have to address the over excitement of when she sees other dogs on walkies next though. The only thing I can recommend for your videos is possibly having mics on the clients too as sometimes it's very difficult to hear what they say Joel. 👌

I had terrible time with the halti. One dog just dragged her nose along the ground to get it off until her nose got cut. My boy just paws and paws and paws it ... he will spend the walk on his hind legs as he has his front to paws upon his face trying to get the halti off. Similar to conditioning the muzzle, ideally up to a week if possible before you even close it on their face. They should really love it. Susan Garrett has a great video on conditioning the gentle leader. The goal is for them to not paw at it and/or be able to get it off on their own. My Dobes love their muzzles. Especially if you travel, great to get them used to a Baskerville muzzle like Joel uses - they can still eat, drink, pant, bark with it on and if something happens the first thing a vet is going to do is put a muzzle on the dog, so why freak them out twice? - once with a muzzle and then whatever the vet has to do to them. I tell all my students get a muzzle for your dog and start getting them used to it. Might not have to use it, but if they're conditioned to it, they won't be as afraid if it ever does have to be used.

I would have corrected her more on that because that to me shows she trying to control her environment. While she is forcing herself on the other dog the other dog is limited on what they can do because she’s on top of them. I honestly think she was a little insecure at first cause she kept dropping her ears and head for the boys but as she got more comfortable she wanted to be in control of them, I say this because when she was smelling and they were where she wanted them to be she was fine, but every time she had a problem or a little resistance is when they were walking away or not were she wanted them to be. Think she just likes being in control and is a little over board about it. I wouldn't say aggressive but more just too assertive

That smelling is way over the top. Connery was so good and patient, my dog wouldn’t have tolerated all of that, it was too much. Maybe the other dogs she has been around aren’t so forgiving and then they get stuck into it and the fight starts. She looks like a girl who wouldn’t mind a challenge 😂.

not bringing out another female was a good call. I think she'd go after another female to leave her males alone...she was all over them!!

Seems like she is really confused as to WHAT Connery is. He smells male but not completely anymore…😅

I wish my sister would watch your video's.. she's got an mix german shepard who bites and growls and barks at everything and everyone if they do something she doesn't like.. I don't trust this dog anymore, and because of the dog, I don't visite her much. She is going to a 'trainer' as well, but everything I hear, makes me a bit mad and dissapointed, because all she is learning is to distract with cookies and sausages etc.. 🙄 Or just to lock the dog up when people are coming over. It's sad to see, because everytime I come to visite, I see where it is going wrong and that the dog is the boss in the house.. But i'm just her 'little sister' (35 but okay.. 😉) and when I say something because I want to help, she thinks I'm just trying to be a smartass.. so I stopped commenting, knowing that what she does, is never going to change the dog sadly, and is only making her loose a lot of money. The dog has destroyed her home by biting everything when not getting what she wants or when they say no.. growls when they are trying to take something she has in her cage or mouth, and has bitten her owners more then one time.. (sister and husband, and my nephews) Everyone who comes to visite, are beeing 'welcomed' with a dog running towards them who barks and growls and stands right in front of you.. I hope she soon understands that the dog is too much for them to handle and she's giving her a new home, because it is getting worse by the minute. It was a dog for the children (first mistake in my opinion) she adopted her (it was a stray) and they all have zero experience with dogs.. her husband doesn't even like dogs, kids are scared of the dog now (3 kids) and there is a lot of tension going on in the house because of other 'not dog related' familie isseus.. it's a very sensitive dog, so that's not helping.. Sorry for the long story.. just a bit frustrated because this dog could be so much better and happier, if just given the right training.. Anyway, i'm gonna keep watching every video you post, learning so much, and when i'm getting a new dog in september, I hope I'm doing much better because of it! (not my first dog, but sadly the first died in march 2021) *also, if my english is not very correct sometimes.. I'm dutch.. 😄

Your English is excellent but your story is very worrying, sounds like an accident waiting to happen especially resource guarding... I hope the children are grown up!

@@towpottsfam7631 The children are 18, 16 and 13.. so they are being carefull around the dog. But it's a very stressfull way to be around the dog like this. She is very alert and barks/growls, even when a family member is coming inside. The oldest kid works in a restaurant and sometimes comes home late at night when everybody is asleep, and is scared that the dog will attack if he comes inside, not knowing who it is.. as you can read, it's indeed a very dangerous situation.

If you can't forward your sister one of Joel's videos, Victoria Stillwell has a great video of a white GSD terrorizing her family. The kids are older too, I believe 10 is the youngest. They run in fear from the dog. She tells them what to do and it's in their own home so they get to see and fix things where they live. Once your sister gets that fixed, Stilwell has another video of a Dobe and a Rat Terrier that the people wanted to have company over - what the visitors had to do as well as the owners. Hope this helps.

Yes, SO much sniffing genitals. If a dogs nose is SO good, why did she have to do it again, and again? Was she visually aware Connery was missing a vital piece? Different scent to entire Prince? Why keep checking? Then, because dogs she was used to had Princes scent [entire, multiple litters] Connery was of no use, changed her attitude to him. I am interested that you do not comment of the different dynamic between dog/bitch, dog/dog, and bitch/bitch interactions. I have always observed that the dogs are ALWAYS "gentlemen" around ladies, no matter how unladylike they behave. GO GIRLS!!
