Dog training basics include getting your dog to focus on you and pay attention. If your dog is distracted, you must first build focus. You must be more interesting than the distractions that your dog sees. Your dog's distraction is often caused by prey drive.
I use a series of exercises to get a dog to pay more attention to me than what is distracting him or her. To get a dog to focus on obedience exercises you must build engagement. This video shows some great exercises to get your dog to engage to you, love training and build a better bond.

People say "So you train dogs?" I correct them by saying "actually I train the handler to train their dog."

I put off getting the membership because there is so much free stuff available. My dog was learning fast and we were doing very good with just the free videos BUT after a short time with access to the member lessons we are doing SO much better. It is a whole new level of awesome. If you are considering getting the membership, just do it! You will not regret it.

Just watched the member version. This is an excellent lesson for me. Can’t wait for part 2. I have a 7 mth old high drive Australian cattle dog who is much like this fella in attitude and level of training. I learned so much of what I can do better. Looking forward to the ‘mouthy’ section. We are mostly past this but am looking forward to your advice to them. It was rough for a few months but am happy to say we are thru the worst of it. Thank goodness the puppy teeth are gone. 😆 Thank you Robert for your excellent training and clarity of how you teach.

Thank you Robert! When I'm doing this at what command should the dog be? I mean the dog have to be always on a commanet or release/break, but the break command means "you are free, do whatever you want". So he is "free" but I still pulla him and gives hom direcrions? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

I wonder what a non-working dog (AKC) like a standard poodle would need to keep focus. Like this dog’s herding instincts are being met

Robert, I'm a subscriber & I used your methods to train an English bulldog and Lab mix and the methods work! My dogs are housebroken and can sit, stay, come, down and crate. We now have a 3rd dog and she's a 16 week old French Bulldog. We've had her since she was 9 weeks old. I do know that she was always in someone's arms and slept in beds so she arrived very pampered. I'm having some difficulty with basic training. Is it me or is training a small lap dog difficult, are the methods different? I'm having a harder time with the French Bulldog than with the other two dogs even with the housebreaking. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the video. Can you remind me please when the dog is not doing what you want is it, verbalisation then pop or is it pop then verbalisation. This was stated in a previous video which I've tried to find but cannot. Many thanks. This video is very helpful.
@LorettaPowell
@LorettaPowell 3 жыл бұрын
Verbal, then pop. The dog will associate the verbal with the pop and in the future you will only need the verbal.

Hi! I've been scrolling your videos, but I can't seem to find an answer to my question! I have a 4 month old rescue GSD. (Was abused and starved in her previous home) My question is how can I help her to not fear her leash ? She hates Any pressure on her neck when I try and walk her; she tries to run and yaps as if she's in pain. She is a bit better with a harness but not much better! Any advice is highly appreciated!

Suggest rubbing the leash/harness on her? I did that with my grooming equipment so they realise they won’t get hurt. It also works with horses
@regenindergosse
@regenindergosse 4 жыл бұрын
Actually we have a malteser that nobody wants to walk with except me. Zero engagement with humans, jumping, rambling in the leash and strangleing himself. My step 1 (your step 2) was just leash training him. Giving him the confidence, that there will be nothing negative if he's walking nice on the leash. I know that sounds too easy but maybe it is. Step 1 for you would be getting your dog to understand that the collar is a nice thing. When you pull the collar out, there are snacks. When she's used to that, there are treats when she has it around her neck. Do little steps and start new. Stay at the garden/house at first. Then a remote area. Then a leash comes in. Correcting for pulling, and many praises and treats if she's following around. It's important you make her feel safe. If things, people or dogs are coming up she's afraid of, fright them away. Make the leash, the collar and the space beside you a safe space. I wouldn't try to leash train her with a harness. Just do that with the "first" leash impression. But start from the beginning. Sometimes taking a step back can make you do two steps forward. Telling how she did is appreciated ^^
@jasminehorton7717

@@regenindergosse I actually went ahead with a harness. I let her play in the backyard with it on. Gave treats when she followed me, added the leash and let her play with that on, then rewarded with treats if she followed. Yesterday i managed to take her for a small walk. She's still unsure of other dogs. Today I've been getting her to sit and I reward with treats if she's focused on me while the other dogs pass! She is doing a lot better already only after 3 walks!

@@jasminehorton7717 Nice one ^^ my dog freaked out when she had to sit while a dog walk past. She was so nervous lol. Now just casually walking past because she knows she doesn't have to greet the dog :D But if it works for you it's fine ^^

*How do I stop my dog being a bully when it comes to playing with a toy etc? E.g jumping and taking it from me when he wants (only on walks when off the lead. And also, most importantly around other dogs. As he barks and has attacked my sisters dog who had a stick. Thank you.*

He doesn't need to pull so hard specially being a collar and not a harness. The puppy is learning. Doing somenthing that is physically uncomfortable or eaven hurtful doesn't make learning quicker, It just makes the dog not trust you. Also being a puppy you must mark the start and the end of the period of time you want him to focus. He can't be 24h completle focused on you so you can't pull so hard on his neck just because he wanted to go to his "mum" or because he looked somewhere else without marking a beginning and ending of the time he must focus. What I see is you are making him very confused.
