I have been so diligent about consistently not letting my dog pull on the lead by stopping or slowing when she pulls. I’ve had zero luck getting her to look to me for instruction on where we’re going. Tried this today and after maybe 30 minutes of working this, I had the best walk with her yet. I don’t know who I’m more proud of; her or me! By the time we got home she never touched the end of the leash. I will say I really needed to make it interesting. I was changing directions, climbing onto large rocks, looping around trees. Life changing little tip!

I thought my dogs was the only one. Shes very obedient at home and always on my hip staring me wanting to know what to do. But on our walks she needs correction, i just didnt understand why she wouldn't eat treat's while outside but this is a big relief.

I think this video has got to be one of my favorite training videos. The correction is so necessary to get their focus back and it's significantly faster and easier than a constant battle of using treats or pulling to get their attention. I've been working on this with my dog and honestly I smile every time my dog has her full attention on me. It's been a hard time because her prey drive is so high but every win has hope for higher distraction areas. It's all about not taking it personal, persistence, and building the confidence through repitition + having fun. Thanks Robert!

I look at a LOT of training videos -- but this is by farTHE best. I've been trying to find a dog in these videos that's similar to mine. Sweet dog, does great in the house, or the yard, but step outside and you can't get her to focus and it's so annoying. "Bribing" with treats is not sustainable. Will definitely be trying this on our last big walk of the day. Awesome video.

@@vildeeo listen to Robert. You do not let your dog off leash until you are 100% sure he’s under control. And even then you do not let them off leash in the presence of other dogs. The leash correction must be in conjunction with a verbal no. After hundreds maybe more these corrections with the verbal the dog will react to the verbal alone. Just today my son brought his dog over I have two dogs. This is the first time they’ve met. I have a large yard with no fence. They were running around playing nicely when all of a sudden my neighbor decided to walk his dog across his property. My dog stopped and stared and I knew what he was going to do next so I said no. He was about 30 feet away from me. He looked at me and stood there long enough for me to walk over and put a leash on him. He still a puppy a little over a year old and I was actually surprised that he didn’t immediately takeoff. Because he had done that on two other occasions months earlier. The fact alone that my voice caught his attention, when he looked at me and away from the dog to me was a major step. His instincts were halted by a verbal command. And this is how it begins.

This is exactly my puppy’s problem. When we’re at home he follows me around, does heel nicely and many tricks on command, sleeps in his crate but on the walk I can’t get him to pay attention to me. Thanks for the video!

You have a puppy if your dog is not at least 4 months you should not use a collar to pull it to do not damage it. You have to just use a happy voice to make them look at you and treat the dog and every time it pays attention you treat it and later you add the "look at me", you have to build this connection so for few weeks or months you will need the treat

Agree with the other user, if the dog is too young then using vocal cues / treats / joy will be good enough. As an adult dog, distraction and disengaging with you is definitely worth the leash pop training! Edit: by young I mean under 4 months or so like the other comment said! Best of luck!

I just adopted a young neutered male dog described as German Shepherd but his behavior is 100% Malinois! It's a good thing that I previously had a Mal/pit mix and was a horse trainer in my younger years. He's a beautiful dog but a handful, especially since he was on leash walking exercise for 3 months while being treated for heartworm. So glad I found your channel, as you describe the dog's nature so clearly and this particular vid is exactly what I need to work on.

Have a Rottweiler puppy who loves to get distracted on walks or outdoors. We always have been told do not pull the lead but I think this makes more sense as it seems the dog isn't being dragged but just a brief snap to reality

Very under rated dog trainer. Been watching your videos since I got my dog two years ago and it's been tremendous to helping him listen off leash and in several other behaviours. I have one problem recently where he leaves the yard to run to other dogs as he gets into too high of an excited state and won't listen. I think the technique you used in this video is exactly what I need to start getting him to stay relaxed in these situations. Since this is a bit more of an excited state is there anything additional I should be adding compared to the situation in this video?

Do some research on emergency recall. Once taught the only time it should be used is in an urgent or specific situation where the dog needs to immediately recall, unlike their name which can always be used. It's taught with a command like regular recall(my dog uses her name- attention grabber- and then the word 'front' -command: ex; name, front!) and while training you should always say yes for first eye contact and then say yes/reward for them coming to you. Start having them sit and make eye contact after recalling. Add in distractions like throwing treats, toys or having someone walk a non-reactive/uninterested dog on leash as a prop for practice. The command leave it is very helpful to teach this as it can be used as a correction while they recall, before the command. Ex: Name, leave it, front!

Living in the city and having a large breed dog I more use this as a safety plan if she gets out of the yard and runs towards a street or if there is a fence aggressive dog at our fence and I need her to recall to avoid conflict/possible injury with another dog/owner.

All you need is this one, haha....start inside so the dog understands leash pressure for 5-10 minutes...im hoping your dog knows yes/no.....great time to teach.....yes=dog where you want it....no=bad behavior, not paying attention and give a little12" QUICK pull....within 1 second..so the dog understands what hes doing right=yes and no=correct...then immediately say YES once responds...correct and reward within 2-3 seconds altogether...quick! (depending on the drive....you may need to step up to a 2.25 prong collar over the check chain/choker....didnt phase my dog and therefore was unsafe...like a flat collar for a pullling/reactive dog, etc...have fun!

This video was perfect for me. That´s my case exactly Very smart 4 or 5 yo rescued doberman. He sits and stays perfectly only when it´s his meal time. While walking he´s on his own I don´t existe hehe He doesn´t pull but he stops only when He feels the leash. I will start correcting him. I don´t want a soldier dog but a little more attentive to me would be nice. Have a question. Would a choke collar would be best for this? Or should I keep my 6ft slip lead? My son just picked up a rescue at a shelter in pa. . The sweetest German shepherd I've ever seen. They found him tied near a highway in Kentucky his feet were melted to the. Asphalt. dehydrated lost a lot of weight. Big patches of hair missing all over his coat. The vet thinks hes around 6 to 8 years old. I don't believe this dog was mistreated at all. My theory is he got lost and someone tied him to the Pole near the highway to keep him from running across. just left thinking someone would come along to pick him up. Fortunately someone did but it was like a week or so later. This dog had a good home he is so friendly loves other dogs loves other people loves kids My son had him over my house today and he played with my 2 dogs. Feel bad for the people that owned because they obviously trained him to be a sweet dog. He has had him for a month now and the dog is looking better but his feet are still bleeding. The vet has him on antibiotics and he should be fine hopefully in a few months.

Would "tug" or a two balls work for distractions as well as with recall? Treats only work before he's been fed. I have a long line. I noticed the gentleman having trouble with the dog getting tangled, and you didn't. Was that because you held the line at the end, or because you are practiced?, does it matter if the line is between the legs as long as it's loose?

My lab mix used to be unfazed by several sharp pops when she was on a martingale collar and regularly pulled until she was wheezing. Used to cough up a lot of her treats as if she ate too fast too and I wondered if I was letting her damage her throat with the pulling. I moved to a HS prong collar, making sure I fitted and used it properly as per Robert and a few other trainers' videos and it was day and night. More leash pressure training and 2 fingers on the leash was all I needed in most cases and just seemed to send clearer communication. Would highly recommend trying it out!

@@thalassophile1665 not in all areas. You can also do a slip lead. Or turn a plain leash into a temporary slip lead. Place it high on the neck like a prong. Same principle with corrections. Interrupt right away and give enough of a correction to stop what he’s doing.
