I wish I could show you just how engaged my pup Cora gets while watching these videos. She not only get physically excited, but she tries to communicate with the dogs on TV. It's cute, funny, and amazing all at the same time. Thank you so much for putting these videos out here! My hope is that some day my travels might bring me to your area and I could visit. I work in the dog community in my area doing various things and would certainly enjoy a chance at meeting the creators behind these great videos.

I've seen dogs react that way and it's really amazing to watch, when a dog's whole world opens up to seeing all this dog socialization. I'm very happy for each dog that gets a lot of benefit from watching these videos. The shelter is open just about every day that's not a holiday, with later hours. I'm rarely there when it's open. The play yard is not in the visitor's area, but a savvy person would know that anyone can go around to the park behind the shelter and peek into the play yard. Playgroups are in the mornings: 8-11 or 7-10 in the summer months, not including holidays. I never know exactly when I'll be recording, but it's usually on a Saturday or Monday. Not Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday.

This is a big problem with shelter dogs. We used to get most of them out of their kennels for a walk twice a day, but during the overcrowding we have, they often only get out every other day. Lots of dogs have been trained to go outside only and we try to get those dogs out as early as possible during the mornings. Most dogs get walked by a volunteer but some dogs are brought to the play yard where I record the videos. I've walked a lot of these dogs, including to the play yard and it's very common for them to pee and poop immediately when they get outside.

I was the one recording the videos. I've spent the last 2 years absorbing as much knowledge as I can from the experts in the shelter and from the Dogs Playing for Life team that visited us for 5 full days of training. There are lots of people at the shelter who know more than I do about dog behavior and body language, although creating these videos has given various bits of knowledge that I haven't heard from anyone else. Two things I've seen in these videos that I've never heard anyone talk about are: 1) I've seen dogs covertly helping other dogs in the play yard. Let's say dog A is being annoying to dog B and B is trying to avoid A, I've seen cases where another dog C, who is clearly watching all this going on, will deliberately go and block dog A while making it look like an accident. There are lots of subtle interactions going on between dogs in the yard. 2) I've seen cases where a dog presented an exaggerated, slowed down, and clearly fake shake-off to another dog that kept trying to play as a way of saying "Enough! Stop!" It was a way of saying, "I already did a shake-off to signal that I'm done." Another thing I've learned from Dogs Playing for Life and from practicing what they said was that I get a LOT more from dogs when I usually take the approach of "Let me help you get what you want." instead of "I'm trying to control you and make you do what I want." I simply signaled when something was off limits or if they were trying to go ahead too fast. The results were incredible with nearly every shelter dog I tried it with. Some dogs don't care where they're going. Other dogs really want to go to a certain place for some unknown reason. I think sometimes it's a smell they detected or something they saw/smelled on a previous day.

my dog camo LOVES this channel!!! im a retired worker from IHS, and i am glad to see someone working so hard to showcase these dogs!! what a great idea!!! i have a question, when bringing them in thru the gate, and most of the other dogs that are already in the run also come to the gate (which is to be expected) i notice that most of the "new commers" that are being put in are frightened-as one would expect... my question is, wouldnt the new commers respond better if the worker wasnt using the shaker bucket?...because it is used to get attention and to make dogs move away...well that noise dosnt stop at the fence, and im sure it is causing the already frightened dogs some major fear, because they want to get away from the sound just like all the other dogs do- not get pulled in to it. i think your 'out" command accompanied with the "holy-water" (aka squirt bottle lol) worked wonders!!! Im SOOOoooo glad to see someone working so hard to get these guys new homes!!

Congratulations! You're the first person to point out a valid mistake that many of the handlers are making nowadays. I sat through all five days of training by the top experts at Dogs Playing for Life and it was a wonderful demonstration of techniques to work with groups of dogs. Dogs will do whatever they can get away with. Gate control is about using targeted, minimum adversives to prevent the dogs from crowding around the space near the gate. The word "out" is used and repeated over and over without any emotional stress to indicate this is a time to avoid being near the gate. Saying "out" means this is a temporary thing. Saying "uh-uh" means it's something that's always wrong. The squirt bottle targets a single dog and you begin by spraying in front of the dog's feet as a warning, then spray the dog's feet, then their back, then their face if they don't respect the other corrections. The dogs should learn this escalation and it matches how dogs correct each other. The small shake can is used to target the whole group of dogs nearby, saying "all of you need to get away from this spot", beginning with small shakes, then large shakes. The large "thunder jug" is the next level to let the dogs in the area know that they're doing something wrong. So the point is to selectively target the dogs who are misbehaving and not the other dogs. And the escalation should let them know that they won't get away with it. Otherwise, the dogs probably see it as "sometimes you get sprayed randomly or get the shake can when a new dog comes in" or something like that. It becomes just a source of stress. In defense of the handlers, it's not easy to do this for several hours, especially when it's a hot day and you might be dealing with organizational things unrelated to the dogs, and the dogs learn this pattern and it's difficult for one handler to break it. Also, some dogs like the spray bottle. A few dogs are deaf so the shake cans don't work on them. The handlers do the really important big things right and I'd consider the gate issue to be somewhat minor, but you're right that it's tough on dogs who are fearful coming in and creates somewhat of a mob mentality among the dogs near the gate.

It's difficult to know if your dog is dangerous to other dogs without actually trying it out. What you might try doing is getting your dog to accept a muzzle and then let him play with other dogs while carefully watching to make sure other dogs don't get in a fight with your dog, who is effectively disarmed. You might try keeping your dog on-leash in the dog park. You might also try setting up play dates with other dog owners that aren't afraid of your dog.

I wanted to know why the dogs have to wear their leaches in the daycare? They can’t even run properly with them and they are dragging it all over the dirty floor. When the owners come to take them, then their hands will be dirty with whatever the dogs ran through. Please explain. Thanks
@DogPlaygroupStories
@DogPlaygroupStories 9 ай бұрын
This isn't a daycare. It's an animal shelter, so none of these dogs has a dedicated human who bonds with them. These dogs came in as strays, from hoarding cases, abuse, neglect, owner surrender due to all sorts of reasons... and so these dogs are mostly unknown. There are over 400 of them. We try to do whatever we can to help them get adopted. I create short videos of individual dogs from this video footage that play in the shelter lobby and are also on the dog's adoption web page. These playgroups have an amazing track record for helping dogs. However, they obviously have more risk than a typical dog park and it's a different situation. Volunteers and staff members are the ones who bring the dogs back to the kennels: removing the drag lines you see in the videos and using their own personal leashes to bring the dogs back to their kennel. At the end of the session I bring the leashes home and wash them. So I'm basically the one who deals with the poop, vomit, pee, whatever that gets on the leashes (at least on the days when I'm recording video). When there's an altercation of any sort it can be necessary to separate two or more dogs very quickly without getting near their mouths. In extreme cases this can be a life or death issue for the dogs. Some dogs are conflict driven and will join in a fight, so it can be necessary to grab a dog's leash that looks like it's about to jump into a situation. The handler can radio for help or blast the air horn and people will come running to help separate dogs. These things are rare but when they happen the leashes are very important. But even without these extreme cases, dogs often don't want to leave the playgroup and we need to chase them down. If they get agitated, they can bite a person trying to grab their collar (if they don't have a leash). It's all based on experience with thousands of dogs.

"Last time Chandler mounted SusieQ the whole time and she just let it happen" guess who else just let it happen, the staff members. This is NOT a criticism, letting the dogs manage their own social interactions is fine. But you can't blame SusieQ for deciding not to put up with another round of the humpy humps and it makes sense that she feels differently about it on different days. Maybe she wanted to put him in his place the previous time and didn't, but that doesn't mean she was fine with having Sir Humpsalot following her around all day. Her correction here was totally appropriate IMO, just like, Not in the mood bud, try your sht on me today and GeT rEKt. @katejay9786 Thanks! I actually study things like storytelling, editing techniques (The Rule of 6), blocking and staging techniques, and also dog behavior. Here's an interesting thing: When film editors are editing a feature film, they'll often look for point where the actor blinks and create the cut there because it tends to be a natural pausing point (In the Blink of an Eye). When creating the Dogs Playing series, I found that to be an effective way to determine where to do the cut when I was having difficulty finding the right place. I've spent a lot of time observing dogs in groups over the years at dog parks and now in these playgroups. It's amazing how complex their interactions are.

I was just talking about the "Why do the dogs have leashes?" comments this morning with one of the handlers while recording the playgroup today. In the newer videos I've been adding text early in the video saying that the dogs have leashes for their safety based on experience with thousands of shelter dogs. That seems to limit the number of leash comments. I wish I had done that in earlier videos. Since this is a dog shelter with strays, hoarding case dogs, dogs with possible behavior problems, completely unknown dogs being evaluated, this is more like a prison yard than a neighborhood dog park where every dog has a dedicated owner. If a fight breaks out, it's important to separate the dogs quickly and safely since some dogs are conflict driven and will jump into the fight. This doesn't happen often but it can be a life and death situation for the dog. Even the handlers can be injured. If you have 10 people rushing into the play yard to separate dogs and they need to grab dogs' collars, someone could easily get bit. It's way safer to have the leashes. It also speeds up getting dogs into and out of the yard so more dogs get a chance to attend. I've personally been in the yard during three fights over the past 2+ years of recording videos, one of them was serious. Based on what I've seen, I wouldn't take leashes off any dogs except maybe trusted dogs that have only three legs to keep them from tripping. The leashes used during these videos are my own leashes that I had hand-made. I rinse them fairly well at the shelter after the playgroup and then take them home and fully wash them before the next playgroup.

Put one of these on for my dog while in the shower and it has a huge mistake, i came out to my dog having chewd up all kinds of stuff from anxiety and stress. I was confused why until i sat and watched the video a bit, and realized that this is just a glorafied dog park full of already stressed out shelter dogs. There is alot of agressive body language, pushy bhaviors left unchecked, and tons of tention, constant marking and all (peeing on things and kicking dirt) the specific video i left on for my dog even had a hyper aroused dog being alowed to try and hump every dog he saw, yea he was corrected, but far to late for every time they pushed onto another dog. Even in this video all i see are stressed tense dogs that are poseing up and marking directly at eachother, fights breakout constantly im assuming. Ive already seen several almost break out in this video and in the bit on the one i left my dog wuth. Dogs are not social like humans and you really should do some research on dog behavior and body language and train your volentiers who watch the dogs interact like this. This is potentially incredibly damaging to the dogs and could easily destry a dogs adoptability, making them reactive before even finding a home. Please please please, olfor the dogs, do not let them in together like this, or, closely watch their behaviors and only let certain dogs in with other certain dogs who actually do clearly get along.

These playgroups were pioneered many years ago by Dogs Playing for Life and they're being applied in over 400 shelters. DPfL re-visited us last year for 5 days to evaluate how we're doing and to train new staff. I attended all 5 days of training and evaluation. These playgroups have been developed and applied with many thousands of dogs (just in our shelter alone). Lots of people comment here based on their experience in dog parks with a limited number of dogs from good homes. We deal with strays, hoarding cases, abused dogs, neglected dogs, etc. The behaviors you see in the yard are being observed by the staff and are handled appropriately. It's important not to micro-manage dogs as they gain dog social skills. We're even more strict than Dogs Playing for Life, who allows a wider range of behavior, but they also focus a lot more on carefully watching and correcting the dogs. Based on the actual results DPfL got with our dogs when they spent 5 days with us, I'd have to say that it's obvious their years of experience in developing these methods work. The proof is in the results. There are very few fights that happen in the yard, despite having dogs with a wide range of behavior issues, and just about every dog in the shelter gets evaluated using dogs in this play yard. You can see the progress of individual dogs in these videos and the playgroups have been instrumental to thousands of dogs being adopted and fostered from our shelter, just as this has been extremely successful in hundreds of other shelters. I've seen amazing results in so many dogs. Some dogs don't continue with playgroups because they just don't learn dog socialization due to their past. We believe in giving them the opportunity and see how they do: sometimes attending 3 or 4 playgroups, sometimes realizing right away that they don't belong there.
@hrpdrp97

@@DogPlaygroupStories I get what your trying to do but this doesn't really teach dog socialization as like I've said, dogs aren't social like humans. This is why advocating for your dog is so important when you have your dog at home. All my dogs are and always have been rescues. Just cause you stop a fight as it breaks out or break up two dogs just before tensions rise too high does not mean they are being properly corrected in time. As I've said, I watched as a dog would not back off of another dog and all that was being done was that the dogs name was yelled when the behavior was already in motion, not soon enough for the dog to understand what it was doing was wrong. Dogs live in packs, not play groups, unless they need to live with these dogs in close proximity at all times there is no reason to force socialization and aloe them to structure a pack before they are ripped from that pack to be adopted. I'm speaking from experience when I say that this doesn't actually help the dogs. I've had a rescue from a shelter that did this sort of thing and it made the dog seem very friendly, but when I got the dog home it was anxiety filled, anxious, wouldn't sit still, tried escaping constantly and was extremely reactive to all other dogs. The dog had a pack at the shelter, and adopted the dog, just destroyed them mentally, and the dog appeared like it was good around other dogs when it was really just ok with those specific dogs. You shouldn't be allowing them to "socialize" this should be an opportunity to train all dogs present to be ok with other dogs existing around them and to ignore them, and promote friendly play behaviors. There is no proof of results tbh. Only dogs that appear like they are getting better and a higher adoption rate, that doesn't always mean things are going well for all the dogs adopted, especially when most people that rescue a dog and then try to return them, don't really return the dog to the same shelter they got it from, or bother to take them to a shelter at all. Few fights, doesn't mean there is no tension and that the dogs are getting along as well. Like I said, please please please do more research on dog behaviors, specifically their body language and social behaviors, cause I'll only say it one last time, but dogs are not social like humans are.

@hrpdrp97 so in order for dogs to live in a pack theyre anti socal? makes zero sence. what makes even less sence is that any of those animals are there in the 1st place, and we HUMANS AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN do zero home work or realize that dogs like children are a product of their environment, and if left to their own decision making usually ends up not to par. if your dog was stressed out because you left this program on for them to watch and they chewed stuff up has nothing to do with the stuff on tv. maybe you need to brush up on your dog skills, or learn self & pet accountability. these ppl here are DOING SOMETHING POSITIVE to help find homes for these poor animals who have been given up on. they deserve 💯 respect, not someone to bitch at them & blame them for their dogs bad behavior! its ridiculous!

I really wish we lived closer and I could do more or maybe even adopt one of those beautiful dogs! Bruce (our Doxie-Pit) watches one of these videos every morning while I'm working. He barks at them, tries to get the other dogs' attention, and when they run out of frame, he'll run to the next room over to see if that's where the other dogs ran to. Needless to say- I greatly appreciate these videos, your work putting them together, and everything the rescue does for these dogs. 🤎

Thanks! After seeing that dogs can get too excited when dogs in the video go out of frame, I try to pan back-and-forth so that they see their favorite dog every now and then.

That's a private video so I'm not able to watch it. You could make it unlisted (so the only visible link would be here) or grant me access to it or make it public. If it's a short video, you could email it to me at the email address in the About section of this channel. I definitely want to see it as I learn a lot from watching dogs watching these videos.

@@laboufchat Awesome! I always like watching videos of dogs watching my videos. It helps guide future videos. I like how part of the time he's doing something else and then pays attention when he wants. This seems more healthy than being glued to the screen for hours. Thanks for creating this video!
