It happens every time: you are outside with your pup and you want him to come over, what do you do? You whistle for him to respond and the answer is always the same. Your dog is sitting right next to you once again. Sound familiar?
Did you know that responding to the whistle is closely associated with training and habit? Even though using a whistle is not a substitute for the verbal recall, it’s always a good idea to teach your dog the whistle command. So what is the best way to do it? Let’s find out more about why dogs come when you whistle and how you can train him to do just that.
The Root of the Behavior
No need to own a prized gun dog to get your pup to respond to your call. Furthermore, there is no magic whistle that will make your dog come over. It all comes down to biology and training. The human ear can hear sounds at frequencies up to 20 kilohertz, whereas the high end of a dog’s hearing ranges from 40 up to 60 kilohertz. This means that dogs can perceive sounds we normally can’t.
Which is why we call it the “silent” whistle. A hunting dog’s hearing is much more sensitive than that of deer and birds. This is the reason why whistles were commonly used for this type of breeds. The thing is, dog whistles work in the same way that any other mode of training does. Given the fact that dogs are consistently trained to respond in a certain way when they hear the whistle, they always commit to the same behavior and reaction.

Vet prescribed ear drops for for my 14 year old chi/terr bc of a double ear infection. The drops caused hearing loss. I was hoping he could at least hear a dog whistle, but he didn’t even flinch. 😢

Dogs won’t react to these whistles to how they would in person. Try a real one. It’s a completely different experience. And if you did, apologies for assuming. I’ve just seen a lot of comments like this… so sorry for assuming if you were like one of those silly people. But more so sorry about your dog. But here’s the good news, their other senses like people get better - or it’s not that they get better but they get better at using them. My dogs 12. And this is always the hard, part of life with them 😢. Hope you two can have as many good days as you can. And you spoiled your little goober as much as possible. Lastly, anytime you go to the vet, anytime I’ve brought my dogs - when I’ve sat on the floor with them, back in the room it seems to calm them down an awful lot. I’ve no idea of the reason why but considering how different each personality as been but this has consistently helped make them feel less nervous.

My. 2.5 y/o American Bulldog didn't seem to like the second one at all - his ears were pinned & he refused to look toward the source of the whistle. Number 1 got his attention in a good way; tilted head, ear perked up, wagging tail, and easily making eye contact. Third one seemed like either he didn't care about it or he was just done with my dog whistling experiment 😂
