TheUmbrellaCorpX7[エヴ] I don't think bastardizing your language with loan words leads to good things, in regards to the language maintaining its identity/soul. Trust me, I experienced mine become more and more dull as time went on and some dubbed high profile tv shows often display something that is hardly grammatically correct or properly phrased dialogue as it was back in the day, and it's affecting everyday speech and news stations as well, with people genuinely believing that using loan words or figures of speech makes them look smart. What impresses me about Joey is how perfectly balanced his bilingual abilities are. As a person raised in a bilingual environment, the majority of us only speak one language perfectly and the other language just for everyday conversations
@holliswilliams84262 жыл бұрын
I have found that 8 times out of 10 people who claim to be ''bilingual'' are sort of partly bilingual, as in they have native pronunciation in the other language but their knowledge of that language is surprisingly superficial. For example, there is a US boxer called Andy Ruiz who was raised to speak Spanish, but if you watch an interview of him in Spanish, his Spanish is surprisingly limited and he relies on using the same phrases over and over again, like ''hice todo lo posible por....'' This seems quite common with people in the UK who are raised in a Punjabi-speaking household. They say that they are bilingual in English and Punjabi, but in reality their Punjabi is conversational and they have somewhat limited vocabularies. With Joey, it seems like he actually has the balance right where he speaks both of them perfectly.

Dogen, you're brilliant. "I still can't talk [Japanese] in front of people which makes me a complete failure" I screw up my native language in front of, not complete strangers, but FRIENDS.
@clothar235 жыл бұрын
I am myself prefer public speaking in something other than my Native language. I seem to make less mistakes and I feel more confident. Which I myself find weird and my friends find outright strange.

This was great. I'd love to see more of these for sure. Even without a script it's still funny and informative.

Honestly, Dogen, I LOVED this. Watching you speak without a script just felt more natural and made it feel more human somehow. Don't get me wrong, I love your scripted shorts, but this was a refreshing change of pace. I'd love to see more of this kind of stuff ❤️

I found that to be thoroughly enjoyable. Personally I’d like to see a video series of you conquering the functional, conversational and impromptu use. Hope to see more of the cuff videos in future. Your videos have inspired me to take on Japanese and spend some more time on the pronunciation and tonal side of it.

I am hafu, but was raised in the US with no exposure to my Japanese roots, and just started really studying Japanese recently in preparation for visiting my family last July. I learned a lot and got some great travel advice and recommendations (like Memrise) from Chris-san's channel. I love hearing him speak because it’s encouraging to hear someone who started later do so well, and with his deep voice he sounds like the reincarnation of a 500 year old Samurai. :) I am very excited to find your channel (thank you, algorithm!) because I sound very American when I speak! My only convincing phrase is currently, "Honto ni?!”

My wife is Japanese, and we're moving to Japan by the end of the year. She's bilingual and speaks English near perfect without an accent, meanwhile I'm out here struggling to count to 10 in Japanese 🤣 I've got a lot to learn, but I'm excited.

I thought it's the Brits that are cynical. Neither, by the way. Also, it's more of a running joke about the purported desirability of Japanese women, but nevermind.

The editing of this video makes it look like I'm watching some topical daytime show on Japanese TV with E-list celebrities. the only thing missing is Dogen being forced to eat some region-specific spicy noodle dish

Omg literally the thing with Japanese loan words is so true....I remember listening to my friend speak in Japanese, and literally I could understand what they were saying just because of the sheer amount of english loan words they were using in every sentence. It was so bad that sometimes I could hear loan words like.......after EVERY OTHER JAPANESE WORD. (Not all the time...but it has happened...) Its the same in Korean too. Some Koreans don't even know what the original Korean word is for something like "bus", or "juice" because they use the english one so often.

I like that Dogen is very positive and supportive of his friend's Japanese abilities. This video was surprisingly wholesome.
