I’m so happy this is becoming more popular! I didn’t have access to a trainer, and trained mine all by myself. No one really understands how disabling Chronic Migraines are

As the science and training techniques advance, I think we're going to be able to use dogs for many more alerts/tasks than was previously thought possible. I'm so glad you were able to train your dog for what you needed. Migraine's can be incredibly disabling.

It's nice to see other owner trained teams! My current dog was originally a stock dog and started alerting on his own. We realized what was going on and started rewarding him and had to catch ourselves up. Then it was mostly working on public access stuff. Just got a new young dog to start training and binging @DoggyU videos 😂.

Watching this honestly feels life changing. I just adopted a dog last month and recently noticed that he sticks really close to me about half and hour before I start feeling my migraine. I never thought I would have a solution beyond taking a ton of pain medication and expecting to lose a chunk of my day every time I had a migraine. He alerted me earlier this week so I took my medicine early enough that I was only down for three hours. I’m feeling so excited right now

I'm so glad you've got a dog that is naturally alerting! You can definitely cultivate and reward the dog for alerting, and consider doing some scent work training to be able to increase alerting abilities and potentially transfer the alert to something very easy to recognize. Happy Training!

This is making me cry 😢 I’ve suffered with migraines for almost 4 decades and our healthcare system is so broken that I never knew that these things even exist. It took decades before a doctor even told me migraine specialists exist and sent me to one. Ive had times when I was living a fully disabled life and no one ever said, BTW you are disabled and there are resources for you. I am so glad you got the help you needed and I hope this video reaches people like us who are so deeply impacted by this disease.

I'm getting a service dog prospect soon and I'll be owner training. I'm quiet young so alot of people don't take me seriously but it isn't necessarily the age that matters, 13+ can be service dog handlers. I've trained my pet dog and he can qualify for one but he's to small. Mine will be doing mobility work. Tysm, I couldn't do this without your channel honestly.

I love this kind of content. I am in FB groups where people talk about getting a SD to train but I know, unless they have done it before, they have no idea and a lot of times, not even close, as to what is really involved. I have worked with many dogs over my 5+ decades and i thought i had an idea of what was involved. Nope. Not even close. Training your own SD is another full time job plus add on that the dog is one of your kids and there is a ton more involve. Seeing what this lady is going through, having to do and experiences, ideas, suggestions really helps to open peoples eyes to what is honestly involved in training, raising and rearing a service animal.

I caught Covid when my assistance dog in training was just 6 months old and nearly died. I didn’t know I had Covid, I just had the sneezes like allergies, so I went and got my booster shot. I immediately felt sick and just went home but it got to the point that the only time I moved was to take the dogs out, feed them, or toilet myself. My pup was crated for far too long every day for a couple of weeks because I had no one. He gets extremely anxious when crated now and has become the best escape artist I know but he hurts himself in the process. So I’m very slowly showing him that the crate is a good place now and he’s not going to be in there long, at this point I don’t even latch the door, just close it over. I have zero support and am trying to figure things out but it’s very difficult 😐 I saw another lady showing how to scent train migraine alert so it’ll be interesting to see that 👌🏽

How can someone on a fixed income(SSI) ever be able to afford either a trained service dog, or even owner train and have the help or support of professional trainers? I wish there were programs to help cover the expenses. It feels like only rich people can have the "luxury " of a service dog.

@@breahogenkamp Each person's disability is different so I can't blanketly say "these tasks would be good for you" and each dog can train for most tasks, while some individuals will do better than others. I do offer a Service Dog 101 Consult on DOGGYU.COM where I can work with you specifically to figure out what the best fit, both breed, and tasks are. I do have some plans for future videos around picking a dog, as well as task options, but again it's very individual. If you're looking for help on picking a puppy, I also have puppy testing videos that talk about breed tendencies over on my Patreon at Patreon.com/DoggyU at the Inner Circle or Elite level. Generally though, go with the lab.

Please answer my question. Can you train a Australian Shepherd to do anxiety tasks??
@DoggyU
@DoggyU Жыл бұрын
Hi Breanna - without knowing the specific dog/breeder/lines/training history/human etc. I am unable to make any meaningful recommendation in this department. What I can say generally, is that in my experience, many herding dogs take on the emotions of the owner around anxiety, so they do not make good service dog candidates for anxiety. That doesn't mean there aren't individuals that can do the work, just that if your main goal is a dog for anxiety, I would get a well-bred lab instead. But again, that is a generalization. I would consult with a service dog trainer to discuss your needs and goals in more detail. I offer a Service Dog 101 consult that may be helpful. You can find more info at DOGGYU.COM

I bring a mat with me to certain places, especially that have carpet. Like my therapist's office has really nice carpets, so I bring a mat for my dog to lay on so I can bring the hair with me when I go :) Alternatively, if your'e very concerned and when it's not too hot, they make suits that are lightweight that you can dress your dog in. This would also keep most of the hair off the floor.

Is there a way to train a dog to interrupt the build up without me telling him, or will I always have to use a que?
@DoggyU
@DoggyU Жыл бұрын
Some people will train a scent-based alert if your body chemistry changes during that time. The hard part though is both the difficulty of collection, and the fact that we don't know what the dog is alerting on so it can be unreliable and just difficult. However, if you have an outward manifestation of buildup that you can train to, often the dogs will start alerting to scent over time as their understanding of the cue develops.
