The League works not only to alleviate animal suffering, but to prevent it altogether. Through community humane education, we encourage our students to seek safe and respectful ways of being in connection with the world and animals of all species.
With children and youth, we offer an array of learning programs and volunteer opportunities, many of which include interactions with shelter animals and thoughtfully selected “Ambassapets.” But did you know that caring for a personal pet, such as a dog adopted from one of our shelters, is a wonderful way to continue these lessons at home? Research suggests that dogs can help young people learn responsibility, develop empathy, practice prosocial skills, and gain self-confidence. Learning and love … what could be better?
