This song shows the poet that Tom Petty was. 4 years gone and it still hurts.

One of Tom's best. Benmont does a great job on this one. RIP Tom.

This is one my favorite TP songs. Saw them dozens of times and they never played this one- no idea why. Never thought I’d like a slow version of this great rocker but Benmont’s organ elevates this version to another stratosphere!!!

What a masterpiece. Man I do miss TP and the Heartbreakers. Class act and one helluva talent. Southern Accents was my favorite studio album and this is a song often overlooked on it because of the popularity of "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "Rebels". Thanks for this amazing post. A shame it only has 12000 views.

Well we come with what was on our back Yeah, when the leaves had died and all turned black Back when the wind was cold and blew them 'round When we laid our blankets on the ground Yeah and I woke up feelin' hungry Lookin' straight into the sun And left a cold night on the ground Like a dog on the run, yeah I fell overboard and washed up on the beach Let the waves and sand roll over me I was helped to be home of a young bleached blonde Who said, "Honey I discovered early in life there's ways of getting Anything I want, some of us are different It's just something in our blood, there's no need for explanations We're just dogs on the run" It's just dogs on the run Yes, the room was painted blue and gray All my meals were served on a silver tray Yes she would laugh, and light my cigarettes She said, "Honey ain't it funny how a crowd gathers around Anyone living life without a net? And how they'll beg you for the answer But it won't ever be enough, there's no way you could ever tell 'em It's just dogs on the run" It's just dogs on the run It's just dogs on the run, baby Like a dog on the run Yeah, like a dog, like a dog Like a dog on the run, yeah

They did record it. "Southern Accents" album. Very different and uptempo, but still great.

dog(s) on the run is the one that didn't go on any studio album. They are both awesome songs, but seem to get mistaken as the same when they are in fact very different tunes.

The music is so beautiful it’s very touching. As Tom Petty says “ all the money goes to the dogs tonight I am feeding part of my breakfast to my sisters 🦋 dog Lola but she’s been my forever puppy for 10 years. She is a miniature dachshund and she just turned 14 and she still looks like a puppy with a little grey. Thank you for posting.😘
