Dog Myths Debunked: Separating Canine Facts From Fiction

There are 14 canine myths commonly accepted as truths and I’m doing some serious debunking to separate fact from fiction. For example, have you heard the myth about “Doodles never shed”? It's a myth because it's genetics. If you breed a shedding breed to a non-shedding breed, we can't predict what we're going to get. Don’t miss this one, because I’m “shedding” even more light on popular lore about dogs that too many people still believe. Enjoy!

My favorite dog is a senior. My female beagle mix raised a puppy when she was 16. I’d never have brought a puppy in for my senior, but she spotted this pup at an adoption event and wouldn’t leave her. It was easily the greatest experience of her life and of mine❤The puppy is 4 now and doing very well

This was so good! I lol'd when you said "what if you had a fear of heights so your friend starts giving you M&Ms" 😂 it really do be like that. A note about being "alpha", you're absolutely right about that your dog isn't trying to dominate you and stuff. What I like to tell people who believe in the alpha myth is that yes, alpha wolves are a real thing, but not in the way people think. In the wild, the alpha wolves are the parent wolves. They don't dominate their children, they raise and teach their pups with compassion and kindness. So in that sense, it is important for you to be a good leader for your dog or puppy, in the sense that you need to be a strong leader they can look up to and trust and learn from. Not by dominating them or beating them or any of that nonsense I'm really glad that I never believed any of these myths, even as a kid. The only one I didn't know was that getting 2 puppies is bad, simply because I never wanted any puppies, all my dogs I got as adults and don't plan to get puppies. I did learn about it while researching dogs, though It's really interesting that some dogs don't like being around feces or urine. My ball python is like that too. I assumed it's cuz he knew bacteria grows on it but now that I think about it, makes me wonder Anyway great vid and sorry for the long comment 😅

Ohhhh boy that two puppies at once thing is 100% true, I can say from personal experience! Mine were foster fails from the local shelter, and my reason for adopting both was that I’d raised them since they were 3 weeks old and couldn’t bear the thought of sending them back at 12 weeks (the age until which our local shelter prefers their foster volunteers to keep puppies). Our local shelter is packed with adolescent dogs who grew up in their kennels, and my two girls being large breed black dogs would have been at high risk of being overlooked.

I must have the weirdest dogs, because they love “hugs”. I’ll put my arms around their body but not squeeze and they will press themselves into me or try to bury their heads. My youngest will hug back by putting his head over my shoulder & pressing into my neck.

Myth: Greyhounds and Whippets need a lot of exercise. Especially if they are ex-racers. Fact; They are sprinters and only really need a quick zoom once or twice a day, then they are couch potatoes. They make brilliant apartment dogs and 1st time owner dogs. They really love that affection they get from their humans and really appreciate a soft/warm bed more than most other rescue dogs do. They can be "stubborn" but positive reinforcement works well; just don't expect all Grey's and Whippets to "sit" because it's an uncomfortable position for them due to their body shape..and certain textures under their paws turn them into Diva's. You gotta convince them it's worth doing. Like a cat.

My dog is not a cuddler. He is so cute that I would LOVE to cuddle him, but I respect his personal preferences. And I M-E-L-T whenever he chooses physical contact with me, like this afternoon when I felt crap and needed a lie-down, and he came and lay by my legs and kept me company.

Anyone with toddlers: if you can’t wait to get a dog until the child is old enough to pet gently (instead of grabbed and hit), you may want to reach out to service animal organizations. Groups like Guide Dogs for the Blind will have well bred dogs that are deemed not suited to service, but who have already been socialized and trained. You will get a dog who can tolerate todler behavior better than others and who has a great head start on training - which you probably don’t have a ton of time for because you have toddlers. Plus your adoption fee goes to a great charity!

Some of the funnier myths are breed specific - my favourite is xyz breed cannot be trained to recall, and I know there are many members of xyz breed in Recallers doing exactly that 😂

Have you got a podcast about humping, marking and neutering to prevent? A couple of people have contacted me, insisting that dominance in the form of humping and marking are indicators of dominance and neutering at 6 months is a good idea to prevent these issues. I got back, explaining humping is over arousal and dominance theory was debunked a long time ago and neutering should in most cases be delayed til at least one year of age but they both insist since they've had dogs live to 12-15 years after being neutered at 6 months.

Hi, Susan has discussed both neutering and humping in this puppy questions podcast: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqeTZGuOptujbq8 And also talked about how over-excited dog humping is not a dominance display: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaSnZ2ZnjNp_ras Hope this is helpful! ❤️🐾

If a person thinks they shouldn't get a rescue dog cause of potential isdues, then they shouldn't get any dog. They are most likely to mess up a puppy and then create a problem dog that gets dumped and becomes another future rescue dog.

S-u-u-u-per happy to take on a rescue pet. The biggest obstacle: I have a mild dog dander allergy, my son has a severe allergy. I'm hunting for a standard poodle or a poodle cross with low dander and low shedding. I don't think there is any such thing as a "hypo-allergenic dog." It is my understanding that you can minimise the problem with proper breed selection and frequent grooming. 'Cause I still want to be able to invite my son into my home. Is there any way to test a dog's shedding? To tell how much dander they crank out? Any suggestions?

My dog will literally push herself between my side and my arm. Or push her forehead into my chest and keep snuggeling closer if I put my arms around her. She is not fond of having arms tightening around her for more then a few seconds though. And off all the dogs I've known she's in a league of her own when it comes to enjoying close contact. I get dogs not liking hugs. It's very constricting for them, and often we're both bigger and stronger.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with an "aggressive cuddler," haha! But like you also said, my dog still wouldn't want me to constrict or restrain her without her consent -- and certainly not as a way to show my affection for her.

Puppies shouldn’t be trained at all for sports - even slowly, gently. Because their joints are just too fragile. Even though they wrestle strenuously with other puppies, run full bore then make hard turns, jump and twist and spin while wrestling… they are nonetheless frail creatures and should not be taught sports. Myth or fact?
