Thank you so much, Susan!! Our challenge is that our dog has developed an aversion to one of our senior cats (it’s a cycle: he reacts to the cat, cat attacks, he doesn’t like the cat, cat only cares to the extent puppy gets in his face). At this point, our puppy’s trigger is that senior cat at whom he whine barks when he’s in his crate behind closed doors and he hears the cat meow when we bring him up. Working through your videos to see if we can figure out how to address this.

All these videos are enlightening. I keep on learning. Thank you, Susan. I'd like to add that sometimes barking indicates extreme stress about that person arriving which is a whole new episode needing a vet behaviourist since that is where I am at.

Thx for the barking video. I am doing some of the things you mentioned but need to watch your ‘how to relax your dog’ podcast. She is a MS and they tend to be verbal. There are days that she will bark at any and every sound she hears outside….cars, garage doors opening, walkers, landscapers, and lord help if a UPS, FedEx or Prime truck pulls in my quad….the site and sounds put her into barking frenzy.

Thank you for this excellent and very much-needed series 😁 Apparently, I have done some of the stuff mentioned already... However, quite often, I face some details where I'm not sure how to handle them best. 🤔 So greeting guests is the ideal scenario for my hyper-friendly, over-excitable dog, and we've been working on conditioning the doorbell and inheriting the hot zone behavior for a while now, despite not having a remote feeder so far... (I know, it's on my list for quite a while already 🙈) I have listened to the relaxation (Ep. 191) and FRIDA (Ep. 200) protocol episodes again and will try to properly build that up and then restart the step-by-step action plan. But meanwhile, maybe you could elaborate more on when and when not to reinforce your dog in certain situations during a "greeting of houseguest". One situation I'm often facing is: What if the dog IS already in a dog bed and even remains there but starts barking? I can't really reinforce him staying there as I don't want to reinforce the overall behavior with barking? Same question how to reinforce/handle the situation when he stays there even while I'm doing business at the door but he remains barking? (I mean, so far, I always have to go back and forth between the door and the hot zone for reinforcement due to the lack of a remote feeder.) Or what if the dog goes into a hot zone, however, is barking on the way there, and continues occasionally while staying there? Also, what if the dog manages to be quiet there but is just below threshold (super tense, vibrating, and just barely containing himself and his voice) Another situation we're struggling with is the "meeting/greeting" itself. What if the dog doesn't care whether the person is ignoring him / turning their back on him and instead is trying to squeeze into the front or jumps on their butt xD I often feel like me stopping the dog from this reinforcement by grabbing the collar and holding him or putting him back in the hot zone isn't really doing any good / the next time he breaks the hot zone, or when he's even released, he just bolts into the person again. Another big challenge for us is our own people coming home. Like, I'm working at the desk, my dog sleeping beside me, and when someone (parents, girlfriend ...) comes home and unlocks the door. He will immediately go into bark mode and won't stop, not even when the person has already entered, and he has seen who it is. He will only stop a couple seconds after or after being able to "go see." Fun fact: when he's home alone, and one unlocks, enters, rings, etc., he will be quiet. For me and my girlfriend, he will even remain on his bed. So he somehow def. thinks he has to do this behavior "for us" or just knows there are usually no visitors coming over when we're not home too ^^ So the main trigger for him is definitely "seeing people" or the "expectation to see/meet them" as he has a similar behavior of rushing to the fence when strangers walk by. However, he will only run to the fence barking, and after a couple seconds, when he realizes, "I don't know you/you prob. won't enter into the property and greet me," he turns around and ignores them. As you also asked what barking scenario you have not yet covered. My girlfriend and I have been wondering for a while already how you managed that your dogs do not bark waiting their turns doing agility and while they are running themselves. I mean a big part is probably already that they can wait for their turn in a relaxed manner and thus start already in a calmer state. A point I also do understand or can see in our dog is frustration barking if the handling isn't ideal. However, there are situations where he's barking just because of the (over-) stimulation itself 🤔 Thank you so much for this series and we're looking forward to your response or follow-up episode 🤓 Edit: PS: since you recommended a remote feeder again... could you maybe also do an episode on "(how to introduce) remote feeders" please? Like the advantages of your three main options you mention and how to introduce them for the various scenarios?

Susan, I am hoping to get your advice. You are amazing and I hang on every word. I am a service dog trainer and I have helped people train their own service dogs for 15 years. I have several books published on the subject. You have changed my mind, however about how to do things because of your approach and the compassion you have for dogs and explaining it from their point view. Thank you. Here is my issue. I am working via zoom with a woman 2 time zones away. She is training her grandsons service dog. He is 11 and has autism. The dog was originally program trained but when COVID lockdowns happened, they were not able to fulfill the follow-up training offered and somehow were essentially left on their own. She contacted me about my books and I began coaching her online. She is super motivated so I do not charge her and I enjoy every meeting we have. The dog Lola had backslid in training and is one of several cases that are terrified to go into walmart because of unruly pets allowed to harrasss highly trained service dogs. (that is a topic for another day). My struggle is that Lola is quite amazing and very attentive to the child. She alerts to several situations. When the child begins to escalate, however, she alerts by barking (which I can't imagine is helpful in calming him down) also, we are trying to integrate her into the classroom soon and alerting by barking is clearly not going to work in school. We have been trying to teach her to touch instead and most of the time she does, however, when the child starts to get intense so does Lola. I know you have a way to stop the noisy alert without potentially suppressing her alert overall.

My boy Rylee is an ACD. He is a demand barker and barks when we approach the back door to go outside - he wants us to play with him. I live in a multiple person home and have two ACDs. Rylee barks like mad when we are outside - he's demanding that I through his - ball, tug whatever. I have tried many things and looked forward to this podcast with hope. Unfortunately what you have here will not correct our problems. I have done the protocols - crate games, hot zone. relax protocol, collar grab, bring me - he is outstanding with this. He still barks when he is excited and wants me to play. I have started to do other things like putting him on a leash when I take him into the yard, and i am doing down stay exercises with both dogs. I still need help. Looking forward to your suggestions. Thank you Deborah

Love the podcasts about reducing barking but I am hoping at some point that you will address triggers such as barking at a blender, tin foil, manhole covers in the street, airplane, birds, seltzer bubbles, seeing the owner (me) leave the house, etc. My 16 month old Sheltie has ALL of these triggers which started about 5 months ago. I love that you train without food which is how I have been training all along. I also say "quiet" and "shhh" but she just stops barking momentarily.

My 10+ week old pup is developing a really high pitched (ear piercing) bark, the main problem I am having is understanding the difference between 'I want/demand, attention/play' and 'I really need to go out to toilet NOW'. I was ignoring or turning or looking away, that had some limited success (as long as I was the only one in the house, because no one else could tolerate the noise) but that also meant we had some toilet accidents in the crate and the playpen. So now I am trying to treat it more like nighttime toilet breaks, in that I say nothing, take her outside and put her in a small secure pen, if she toilets I take her back inside, if it seems I have been manipulated into giving attention, then I leave her by herself for a while before bringing her back in. Does any of this sound like I am on the right track because it doesn't feel like she is getting the message..

My dog barks when a delivery person comes (unpredictable times) or my tenant drives in the driveway (unpredictable times.). How do I train her to not bark so much, when I can’t rehearse good behavior? I don’t have anyone to predictably come and drive so I could train my dog to be less of an “alarmist.” She alerts to sounds as well...my tenant getting in or out of his car. Is this anxious barking or normal protective behavior?

This is great! I love the step by step protocol for barking at the doorbell/visitors. But I need a step by step solution to stop my dog from barking at people walking by my house with or without a dog. This happens while she is outside sitting on the deck and I am in the house. My kids don't use the doorbell and Bella is usually quite but if they startle her by coming in quickly with energy she will bark or quietly woof until she knows who they are. This has been difficult to habituate because I never know when my son will so up.🤷♀️ I've seen her calmly watch a bunch of rowdy boys walk in (one was wearing a motorcycle helmet and talking muffled) and she just wagged her tail so it's the starting that's the trigger. She's gotten better with "on your bed" aka HZ but it's the unpredictably (and I'm not always home) that's making our progress slow but I do see progress. 😉 Any suggestions?🤔 One of the twins has already moved out so there's that option. 😁

Thank you for your podcasts, I have a question about the barking protocol - I have seen some success in reducing barking in a few situations, eg getting out of the car, asking for food. but not if my dog barks during the training, eg playing the games. I interpret this as frustration, wants to get on with it. How would the protocol look if I was working on reducing barking. Do I ignore him until he stops.? Not a lot of training / games takes place then. One of the few times during training he does not bark is if I initiate training when he is in the crate. If it’s out on the floor the barking is there or he does a excited anticipation noise as if he is trying not to bark and the squeaks come out instead. Thank you

My dog is a loopy lurcher, he's very very clever however he's not a border collie, he enjoys learning and once he understands a command he enjoys that communication very much, you can see in his face and his excited body language he's saying i did it, i understood what you asked and i did it, he's always clear in expressing that he knew what i asked he did it and he enjoys that, but thats at home, if there is anything else that's more exciting than our communication and unfriending even if its at home and he can see it out the window i lose him, he's very very reactive to most things if im honest, its not his fault at all, he was a lock down dog so socialising of any kind was not aloud (by law 🤣) so he just doesn't know how and he's so frantic at this point im struggling to even get his attention even at home if anything is going on outside the window! How can i help him? Please? He's really smart, so i know he'd thrive if i knew a way i could get through to him over any outside stimulation 😂 He's only interested in treats and toys if nothing else is going on so i need another avenue. If you have any advice at all I'd very much appreciate it 🙏 x

The e-collars of today are a far cry from older versions. They are not “shock” collars. They use the same e-stim technology chiropractors use and doctors/exercise physiologists use on sore or spasming muscles (TENS) or use vibration (like a pager) and are not harmful or damaging to the dog in any way. I truly believe that Susan has great things to offer for dog training, but her example of the citronella collar simply show that her use of that was not proper. (You don’t strap on a brand new device, spray it with no introduction..) There are ways of using those devices that are not harmful, or don’t introduce unwanted fear behaviors. Those devices are also responsible for saving dogs’ lives that would otherwise be euthanized in shelters for unwanted behaviors.

It is minus 40 outside for this whole week which is making it difficult to be outside for or exercise. Sigh. Working on training as many times as we can. But the biggest reason our puppy is barking is because she sees our cat. We have the puppy in a really big pen and as we are in the middle of building our house, she doesn’t get many moments outside of her pen except when we take her out door for a potty break. The cat teases her and it is really difficult to have her stop barking when she sees him.
