I've kept going back- back- back- to one podcast or another so today I said, heck, I'm just starting at the beginning !!! Susan, I am 72, have a 5 mo old mini Aussie, and have trained previous dogs just as you said.... My Zoe (current companion) is making me the person she thinks I am ! I know i'm making mistakes because I'm training differently, and it's foreign to me- BUT- I am committed to giving her her best life so that we an grow old(er) together. Thank you SO much for who you are and how you train- you are an angel, for sure.

I did the same thing. For months, I've been watching different trainers and, today, I decided to start at her beginning. How is Zoe doing with training?

Well as someone who is starting professional dog training, I've been asking myself (after 8 years of studying from LOADS of resources and having done dog-walking professionally for 15) "how can I start professionally training when I keep learning more and more about dogs/ behavior mod/ training, etc.??" I feel like I need to get to the point where very few things are new concepts to me before I have any business training professionally because I care so much about dogs and their people. I've been studying independently from every source out there and down to my six favorites (yes including you Susan! 😄). I think it's time for me to start, and if I'm very conservative with what I take on, I should probably adopt the attitude "well..... Done ( in this case, starting) is better than perfect" ! 😱

Back in the 90s, I read a dog training book about a vizsla who used to fight with every dog it met but then was rehabilitated and never fought again. I just did a quick google search for it but didn’t find it. I was already a positive reinforcement trainer but this book and dog I never knew definitely shaped me further. I actually had computer passwords referencing that book to help remind me that I don’t have to enter any argument that I’m invited to. Do you remember this book? This podcast needs more views ❤

OMG, I love every single aspect of your podcast: what you're saying, how you're saying this, your body language. I have a rescue dog who is now 10 years old and who came to my life as 1.5 - 2-year-old with the problem of fear-based aggression towards people (not very severe, attempts at scaring people away rather than biting them) and reactivity towards other dogs. I didn't know anything about dogs then, tabula rasa - my only "knowledge" was that dogs are people's best friends. I went with him through the whole course of traditional training, which did some damage but, luckily, not catastrophic damage. And then I started learning - and he turned out to be a very good teacher, patient with me and all my errors. I recently realized that, thanks to him, I'm a very different person now and I owe him really a lot - I am shaped by this dog and I become open to get shaped by others now. Than you!!!

I watch most of your videos several times over because there’s always so much covered in so little time - it would be nice too, to have more attention paid to the challenges that come with/from small dogs. Training requires a lot more bending yourself in half, the different personalities of small dogs, even when they’re puppies. Training my 4 lb. cockapoo has presented me with all sorts of problems that my 80 collies never did. (She is now two years old but still only ten lbs).

I have just discovered you and I absolutely LOVE your philosophy so far. (I’ve only listened to 6 episodes!) My last dog passed at the end of 10/2023 - just a few months ago. I am about ready to get another rescue dog & have been trying to learn all I can. I’ve had 4 dogs in the last 10 years but have never done any training! I’m not doing that again - both of us can be much happier! I had no idea all of this exists. I’ve had huge guilty feelings but I’m starting every moment to “start today” (you just said it in Ep 1). I’lll figure out where to get some questions answered, like how to be choose my next rescue dog? Thank you so much! And, reading the comments, it sounds like I’ll be in great company on this journey with your experience!

Thanks to my experiences, I went from an introverted extrovert to a full-on introvert. 😮💨 I'm grateful for coming across your videos because they helped me change my perspective (some things I knew before, theoretically, but that wasn't helping when impulsive moments kick in) and with it improve my teaching her, and at the same time I'm mad I haven't come across them sooner and avoided some mistakes I made and damaging things I did. 😞 Still unsure if I'm being clear to my girl, though. 😅 HOW do I increase her excitement/joy for training and games with me? She used to go crazy about the tug and frisbee (and water), but lately it seems that not even that can keep her fully focused (I do balance breaks, I use different-valued treats, I add challenges/distractions when she's good at something at home, I train with her in different environments, I use "squeaky" voice... What else can I do?!) For example I did "it's your choice" with her since the beginning (I haven't come across your videos yet at the time) because I've seen it somewhere else, though they didn't explain how important that is for things other than self-control - and she STILL continues to attempt to grab stuff off the ground outside, just yesterday she came across one bone outside, sniffed it and left it and instantly got a praise and reward, only to come across another one three seconds later and attempt to grab and chew it! Thankfully, she at least learned to drop on cue better than to control herself, so that hazard was avoided, but it's so discouraging to not be able to see any significant progress in that area! 😮💨

I always try to think about what i did that caused my dog's problem (sometimes like jumping it is just that the boundry of "no jumping" has not been taught yet), but my fiance has taken to calling our new 10month rescue puppy "dumbass." For example he sniffed then licked a paint roller (dont worry it was a new one and a small lick), i was like "you realize smell and taste are like 80% of a dog's learning toolkit right?" 😂 He is definitely the indulgent/impatient one with the dogs, actually asked me today how to get him from jumping on the doors, i looked at him and asked if he meant the jumping while in seperation anxiety mode that we are already working on smh (that was infact what he meant and hadnt thought of it that way).

Just listened to your KZbin video on resource guarding. We have a 6 year old female lab. We moved to FL about a year ago, and have a small yard so we started going to the dog park. She didn’t really play with the other dogs, but enjoyed going. After about 4 months, she started chasing and barking at some of the dogs that got close to her. So we stopped going. Then my daughter was watching her while we were on vacation, and she bit her dog when he got close to her dog bowl. Is this something we can fix ourselves, or is this something a vet behaviorist needs to help us with. Thanks

Request: I'd like to submit a professionals name to be considered for an interview episode. You on your podcasts, and your outstanding moderators on your Facebook groups, recommend seeking professional assistance when dealing with dogs with XYZ issues. I participate in homeschooled dog and free dog training Facebook groups. More dogs than I can count are experiencing XYZ issues. I myself experience issues intense enough, in the presence of other dogs, to prevent us from joining group classes. In dialogue with one of my fellow participants on one of your Facebook groups it was advised that I check out ___, I have been hanging out on her Facebook group for a few weeks. I have absolutely L💗VED what I have witnessed shared there. Just yesterday I made a financial choice to forfeit something important and invest in her ebook now rather than later. I managed her first two chapters before my eyes got too droopy and my laptop battery got too low to continue. I will be taking what I have learned in your homeschool the dog program: - being a good student - videography of our training sessions... - thoroughly documenting my dog's "rewards", both the ones I like and the ones I detest -... And so much more I will be applying all you have helped me gain in homeschool the dog to her program until my dog is sooooo comfortable around other dogs that he could effortlessly walk through a beginner dog training class with a not so great instructor and completely stay engaged with me. I will be documenting our entire process and publishing videos on a new KZbin channel. Please ask me what her name is and what her books are. PLEASE gift her wise counsel to you're growing audience 🙏🏼
