Great info as always 🐾♥️✨ Special Thanks for mentioning the Huntaway breed 🙌🏻🤗 My boy (just turning a year) is half Huntaway and there isn’t a lot about them out there😉 He is very communicative 😜(I had found enough info about them to be aware of it before I got him😉) I adore him he has Greatness❣️✨🐾♥️✨🙌🏻 We work on his demand barking (pay attention to only me syndrome.....I have multiple dogs in my home 2 seniors and a 3 year old) Overall he is just a fabulous dog and I’m not concerned about it moving forward because he loves to work and has more try than any dog I’ve ever had. I’m so excited about our future together 🐾♥️✨ Thanks again🥰

I'm so glad you talk about WHY dogs bark! And, Susan, my girl is a task-trained ADA compliant PTSD service dog, and a huge part of her just is to bark at people. She can do it on cue ("watch out" *point at target), but she's also encouraged to bark at strangers at the door, she's a guard dog. When some ppl say something like that border agent said to you I always smirk and say "if she wasn't you'd be bit, she's trained to protect me". She has an off switch, though, and your anti bark protocol helps my clients with their demands barking!

Hi! i first got to say that i loove your videos and that i am so very grateful that you exist. thanks you so much for all your help! secondly i wonder 💭 how would you handle it if your dog was crate train, is in its crate, someone comes home (entrance the home) and your dog would bark in a way that seems to be like the dog is alarming but also scared? my dog does this and i dont really know how to handle it 😢 i hope you can give me some advice 🤞 btw, the crate is in a room where she doesn’t see who comes in thru the door. she does this even tho the person who comes thru the door is someone she knows. after she has her alarming bark and she starts to recognise who has come home she then obviously wants to get out to greed her friend 😂 i actually tell her ssshhh and she narrows down the bark witch i’m glad that she is able to do BUT. it brakes my heart to see that’s she feels (among other things) afraid and i would love to be able to help her just the right way. I really hope that u can find the time to answer my comment and once again, thanks you so much for your videos and i’m so grateful that you do what you do ❤

I have a 9 yr. old Huskimo (Husky/American Eskimo). I can tell the difference in her bark at someone walking past the house as opposed to walking up to the house. She also has an excited bark if a dog is walking past the house! I learned not to yell, but just say "quiet". Its not 100%, but it helps (if a dog is walking by, all bets are off!!!)

I live in a rented apartment and my dog guard/ alarm anytime someone walks in the staircase past the apartment. He can do this even in the middle of the night and wake up alot of people. Is it possible to teach the dog to mark it in a way that is quiet so he can still feel like he gets to comunicate it?

I love your end incessant barking techniques. I have a great one that works with mouthing, nipping biting, etc by puppies. As they engage your hand or fingers gently push your hand in, not to hurt them but to be slightly uncomfortable . They will drop your hand, fingers etc. it takes only a few times in a few days or less and they stop. I replace my hand with an appropriate chew toy. I have taught at least 8 or more pups we owned , or i taught neighbors or relatives this technique and it always works. Easy and quick.

My 1 yo lab barks when I'm helping my children get ready to go outside, sometimes when I'm getting myself ready to go out. Sometimes all the getting ready means the dogs will be coming too. Often, the kids are just going outside to play by themselves. At the moment he's in a crate when I'm too busy to keep an eye on him, so I don't know if it would be different if I let him out before getting ready, but my concern right now is that he'd be into everything while I'm wrestling getting kids into boots, plus if he's not coming too then he'd have to go back in his crate if I was going outside without him 😊 he figures out the food puzzle toy I have in seconds and then starts to chew it. I'm half way through the video and have some ideas already about how to help him.

OK, I’m a longtime American Eskimo owner, so I’ve got dogs that both like to talk a.k.a. vocalize and their bread to be watched dogs. So I’m looking for information, not so much on how to get them to stop barking completely, but I’d like to be able to tell them to be quiet after they do their alert bark for me. Which unfortunately can be anything from a person walking by, to a leaf falling off a tree - lol. PS I’m also a solo female RVer (who travels all over the US with my two fur babies.)

A great video compilation! I just can't see how to apply the protocol (remote feeder/someone at the door) to my situation. My 3 yr old Border Terrier barks at wildlife in the yard and at, (some), people/dogs walking down our road. She is mostly on the deck or at the patio door when she barks. I can block off the patio door, but she can still hear the deer, turkeys, even a woodpecker knocking on a tree, etc. I exposed her to the yard guests since she was a puppy, having her sit and watch on a long line. I also reward when she doesn't bark. But she still barks, especially if the wildlife is startled and runs. Any advice?

@DogsThat I have watched the barking series several times. I am unable to apply the protocols with any results. My frustration with her is increasing to the point that I have considered an ecollar. My neighbour is complaining and threatening. Niw she is not permitted outside unless she is on leash. She is a great dog otherwise. We are involved in several dog sports and train daily.

My parents' 15 year old dog is really good at demand barking 😂 My parents think they're "punishing" her by giving her high-value food 🤣 because she stops barking to chew. So the stopped barking reinforces the human behavior

While the information and strategies are fairly useful for micromanaged dogs that live predominantly within the home or apartment, most of the issues in my own area are related to dogs that live predominantly outdoors on the typical Australian quarter acre block. I have had multiple families move in alongside me that have had problem barkers. Dogs that bark all day and all night, often whether their owners are at home or not. Generally non stop or hysterical barkers that react to everything. In some cases, the owners would go away for days on end leaving daily care to a friend visiting once a day. Most of these dogs never had a daily walk. Do you have any thoughts on how I could influence these neighbours? (My own dogs are not problem barkers).
@DogsThat

@OldDogNewTricksAustralia Thank you for sharing your perspective! Outdoor dogs, especially on larger properties, can face challenges like boredom, frustration, or lack of exercise, which often leads to excessive barking. You might gently suggest enrichment toys, regular walks, or training games to keep their dogs engaged and happier. Framing it as improving their dog's well-being can make advice more approachable. It’s great to hear your dogs aren’t problem barkers-you’re clearly meeting their needs well! Your example might inspire your neighbors. 😊 (Julie - DogsThat Team)

Ha, funny. I live in Australia and have a young GSP. I'm often told this sort of dog needs so much space to run, best a farm situation. And when I tell them I live in an apartment in the city, and I never had any behavioural issues, they can't believe me. But yes I do everything DogsThat suggests on a daily basis. You might have an acre of space for your dog to run but if you don't do anything with it, all you get are behavioural issues.

Question: occasionally, well once a year, we have to board our 3 dogs. What can kennels do to stop the barking? When we leave the house, the radio is on to decrease the outside noises. The only time they bark is when our car pulls up - then they sing the songs of their people. We wait a minimum of 3 seconds of quiet BEFORE opening the door. Any suggestions would be great because the kennel is not doing any games with the dogs. Thank you so much!

@@DogsThat it's indoor/outdoor runs with barricading between runs - so no fence fighting. The dogs get out of the run once a day. I guess I could pay for more one on one time. They usually play a radio. Apparently the dogs barked/howled non-stop for 3 days straight - didn't get hoarse and they don't even think they slept. They live on the property. Not just bad for our dogs but the other dogs as well - ugh!?! Never an issue last year or prior years either. Almost don't want to go back since that's where the barking that long happened. I do the cardboard bombs at home, occasional marrow bones, stuffed Kongs - guess I could bring a stash of stuff for the kennel. They are only 1 of 2 places that I actually feel comfortable leaving them - have visited many places and not happy or comfortable going anywhere else - size wise, kennel smell, staff, etc.

Kennels are only interested in your money, once the dog is left it will get fed watered and occasionally walked, beyond that they won't do anything. What they may do is feed your dog food that your dog is not used to so this may upset its stomach and the dog may be remembering this when you return so is getting anxious ad barking. The Kennel is clearly the trigger. We returned our GS pup to the our breeder once for a week of evaluation and left his kibble etc. but then got the full bag back when we picked him up. The breeder said she'd been feeding him the same as the other dogs raw meat and there was no phasing in of the different food like she told us we must do when we picked the pup up originally at 8weeks old. She also used a slip lead on the dog without our approval. So don't be surprised that Kennels don't do what you think they are doing or should be doing.

You might try to get a house sitter, it sounds like your dogs didn’t settle at that kennel. Getting a house sitter means your dog will be able to stay in their own home when you have to go away.
