Oh to have found Susan before we bought our mini daxie puppy home 🤦🏼‍♀️ we over socialized in all the wrong ways and have a reactive 10 month old. All the breed specific books we bought before getting him told us all the wrong things. He's doing well now that we are combining Susan's courses with a breed specific behaviourist who uses only positive reinforcement, but finding Susan earlier would have been a game changer. If you've found Susan and it's early days with your puppy, stick with her! If you've found Susan at any point in your pup or dog's life she's still just as valuable!

I believe she is very good, I think many trainers are amazing, BUT I sure would like them to show their stuff with a breed that's not a Border Collie or other amazing learner. Show me with a hound, say, a Rhodesian Ridgeback. I'd like to see what these exercises look like with a Redbone Coonhound pup. I'm sure they could train them, too. You know what I mean? A breed with more of that middle finger of independence, that's growing like mad for months on end, that teeths forever.

Susan Garrett has trained many breeds over the years - she has border collies mostly now because you can't compete at national level agility unless they are a pedigree. Tater salad, her rescue dog was a right terror when they got him! He is a whole other dog now

I grew up with dogs, but two years ago, I got my first puppy. And I did all of the things we weren't supposed to do. Now, he lacks self-control if someone interacts with him. He goes from "politely waiting in the elevator" to jumping 5ft+ to say hi when he sees any openness from bystanders. I live in a high-rise condo so seeing people is part of our lives. About two months ago, a personal situation was finally resolved, and I have definitely seen improvements in his understanding and connection with me - probably because I'm less stressed. His recall is only now starting to show signs of existence. I think he is a Harrier / Catahoula mix and those scent hounds can be tough to create environmental neutrality. I LOVE my boy, and I don't think it's too late for him to develop behaviors that are more conducive to modern society, but lesson learned. 🤣🥰🙃

You have many dogs, and they seem to enjoy each others company. Are you talking about intentionally going places to meet other dogs when there is not need to since you already have more than one dog at home?

Emmidiately at end most dogs don't need doggy friends Thankyou! While walking 3 dogs kinda like training getting better a man with extreme controlled Doberman no leash was on path. We went other way when he brought dog to down command walked up to elder persons with small dogs and allowed Doberman to meet sniff. Cool ! No thanks we went opposite direction, I am confident of his dog not the control I have .I believe he was giving gift to his Doberman an social experience sightings smells. I noticed he was behind me and I turned and said the dogs aren't trained, he acknowledged but, my dogs didn't pull my arms off. YEH! WE BEGAN OUR WALK WITH FASTER TRAVEL MAN AND DOBERMAN GONE. WITH PRAISE REALIZED THAT MAN GAVE ME A GIFT . CONFIDENCE we are on right path.

Puppies playing together learn what a hard bite and a soft bite is, how to play fight is natural for growing dogs and keeps the dog from being overly aggressive with other dogs and people, when its older. This needs learned from a few weeks old.

I’m thinking about switching my puppy to a raw diet, but it’s. A little intimidating to say the least. Have you considered doing a video on what items you recommend using if training a dog on a raw diet? Like squeeze tubes etc? And general raw diet safety tips? And anything else related to a raw diet that you’re comfortable sharing? This could be getting into content you may not be as comfortable covering for various reasons so hopefully obviously no pressure!! Whatever info you’ve already shared or would feel comfortable sharing is greatly appreciated!

CER conditioned emotional response. pairing an event or behaviour with something emotional, ideally joy... make riding in the car feel good. make going for a boat ride feel good, make going to tbe vet feel good.

Such a great podcast again! I have a dog, who is totally into playing with other dogs, and in some cases I have a hard time to have his focus when other dogs are around. As he is a sports dog, I haven’t let him play with other dogs in most cases for years now because I felt that it has a negative impact on our trainings. (There is the chance that he is not willing to come when you say so, etc). I was wondering however, if you have only one single dog, isn’t it different from your case with several dogs? I felt so bad many times when my goal was to neutralize my dog and I said no when someone came up to us with his dog (and I knew my dog was open to playing). And what do you think about puppy schools when you are there and puppies play around and the you do some exercises and then they play again together? These are one-hour lessons for puppies and owners - just like a school for young dogs but this is for puppies. Do you think this is he good way to go with socialization?

How much is true or we should care about the idea of the puppy socialisation period ending at 12 weeks? My puppy came to our home at 10 weeks (Thank you for your advice. She is very stable and has no puppy biting. Sometimes she suckles, but no biting so far) and a week has past. Now we have only one week left until the end of the socialisation period. But if our goal is safety, connection, confidence, then, even if we can only do so much for the next week, the progress towards the goal continues the rest of her life with me, doesn't it? It's better to plan and prepare based on the need of the puppy than to take the puppy all the high distraction places? In other words, is it ok to think that connecting with the puppy and building positive CER by playing games precede any extraordinary visits or experiences?

you can't change the past, we only have control over today :) I got my puppy at 11 weeks old, and once I got a puppy at 10 months old (a rescue). I would say, Start from today, and work with the dog in front of you :) - I am an online student of Susan's and I cannot recommend them highly enough. I currently have an adult dog I adopted and a puppy - enjoying them so much, working through the training :) Good luck! and have fun! :)

I love this this is perfect. I haven’t seen any training on your new puppy yet. Do you not do tubes on him? I was hoping for KZbin’s starting at 10 weeks up to two years old but I think I’ve only seen one but I will go back and take a look so please don’t hold me if you have other ones there that I didn’t see hoping to see some soon of your new puppy.

I have a 6 months old gsp pup and I live in a quite dog dense area. I've been training with her since the day she came home. She knows a lot of games and she loves playing with me. I try to actually stay away from other dogs as much as I can, as she loves them a little bit too much. She gets excited when meeting another dog and wants to initiate a play. So what I do is I try to stay away from dogs in a safe distance and play with her and get her attention on me. Pretty much I do everything you said in your podcast. I go to a dog park in a non busy time and I play alone with her in a corner so dogs in the background become a white noise. But once the dog gets too close her attention is on him and in the first few minutes she wouldn't react to my calls. After she would come back, but it's hard to stop her going to another dog. I usually try to act before her but sometimes another dog would surprise me too. Also I have been struggling with walks around the neighbourhood. There are so many dogs around and I just don't want her to think walk equals play..I often just take her to the side and tell her to sit, lay down or touch and wait for the dog to walk past. She does listen and I get her attention on me, then reward with a "cook" in my case it's some high value air dried meat or just a cooked chicken. But some dog owners stop and let their dog approach mine..this is driving me crazy and I don't want to be rude to them. And this is when my pup gets hyped and starts zoomies on a lead, wrapping herself around me, another dog and the dog owner and it becomes awkward. Also I'm scared that she will dislocate my shoulder my day. Are you able to tell me if she is going to change her interest in dogs if I keep doing what I'm doing with consistency? I fear she will always be crazy about other dogs and the walks will turn into one big avoidance game.

Zo blij om dit te horen. Er werd mij steeds gezegd, je moet naar de hei en het bos gaan dan kan je hond lekker rennen en spelen met andere honden en goed gesocialiseerd worden . Maar ik vind dat het grootste gedeelte van de honden daar zijn helemaal niet zo sociaal. En aangezien mijn hond toch onzeker en erg onderdanig is( niet voor zichzelf opkomt) wil ik niet dat zij wordt blootgesteld aan lompe en onaangename honden ,die haar een trauma kunnen bezorgen .Ik heb haar met de meeste honden uit t dorp kennis laten maken, zoveel als toegestaan met haar overal gewandeld, ook mensen gezegd dat er niet altijd geaaid mag worden ( want dan wordt ze te opgewonden)) en ze doet 't best goed 😊
