As I used to breed American bullies, I immediately saw how the adult dog was stressed by the very dominant and disrespectful puppy. Female dogs, who already had puppies of their own, clearly know how to deal with such a puppy and would teach the puppy the correct behaviour, but a dog with no such experience could really freak out when confronted by such a puppy, and so a human would have to intervene. This way the older dog can also learn how to deal with a disrespectful puppy or even older dog.

Hi Susan! New listener here - I'm slowly making my way through your podcasts (from #1 to #56 in 6 weeks, even the one on puppy potty training despite having an older dog who was house trained when I got him! Great listening while I'm driving or walking my dog) and I have really appreciated the way you break down concepts for someone like me, a complete novice with their first dog. This episode is incredibly useful, as while our rescue is a pretty great dog, he does have some shyness / nervousness and its ME who needs the training to help him and reading his body language. So thank you for all you do! I know in some episodes you ask for suggestions on other topics, and something I'd love is for training / minimising alert barking. While I like that my dog barks when guests arrive, he does tend to.... go on a little bit. I don't want to ever train him to be afraid of barking or vocalising ( a) because its not a bad behaviour all the time and b) its a pre-cursor to other more aggressive behaviours if he feels stressed) but I would like him to only alert once or twice. Thanks so much Susan, from Hannah and Kenobi in WA, Australia

So so helpful. I have watched this video 3 times now and recognise so many signals that my own dog is giving us... so so helpful in gauging how to help my boy in every day situations, dog-dog interactions etc. He struggles with over excitement and yet I now see and recognise for example that Quincy's shaking before each walk as we leave the house, is probably him trying hard to calm himself before we head off... and indeed I focus a lot on calm walks injected with plenty of training games and occasionally a fun play date with an appropriate dog. This podcast is a keeper ❤ thank you so much

Such a great wealth of information in this podcast! This is something I've studied in learning to help Rigby be more comfortable around the grandkids and new people. He too is a submissive dog in certain situations and also does a great job handicapping when playing bitey face with Callie. One thing I should video and get your opinion on is when my adult kids come to visit Rigby will first sit but then somersaults to his back. He has grown up around them and they take it as he wants a belly rub, but he will also do it with people he is not as familiar with so it does get a bit confusing. With new people I'll call him away to give him an out. I already have Calming Signals, but happy to add to my dog book collection...thank you!

Excellent video, thanks Susan! 20 year ago I trained with Turid Rugaas and since then whenever possible Calming Signals are the first thing I like to teach my clients about. The only thing I would add is that whilst many dogs may take a yawn as something calming a few dogs will take it as a stress signal and rather than calm them down it will have the opposite effect. Thanks again for the video, I've shared it. :o)

Just a note: when the episodes are in a playlist, we can’t leave comments 😢 I'm getting a puppy in a week and a few days, so I have watched all the puppy videos and jumped into some other videos. You provide a ton of information, and I will go back to take notes. Like a puppy, I need repetition 😊 Anyway, thank you for all of this great information. I look forward to training my puppy with your methods.

second comment - this reminds me of when my Jake - who is now 12 years old came to us a a 10.5 week old pup. Took him to my sons who had an adult boxer. Jake uber playful and boxer engaged a bit. But boxer laid down made side glances at Jake the pup. Jake was play bowing o beat the band and shuffling to right and left- boxer sat there for a while and guessing he said 'oh lordie enough' (i know we are not supposed to do this be that was the expression) lifted his front leg, firmly but not harshly put it on top of the pup to 'stop it' and then had the expression to us ' ok i took care of that - now we have peace' . None of us knew body language but we all understood including the pup Jake. Was one of my fond memories of the early days - and now that i know more so totally respect the boxer for being so appropriate.

Great information. I know you have to be an advocate for adult dogs that are stressed around puppies. But... as an owner of a very busy lab puppy... how do they eventually learn to be polite and play accordingly with the adult dogs? How do they get the exposure to play appropriately?

In the initial video I did think that the first few bows were playboughs but towards the end was pretty certain the adult dog was showing signs of stress. The only reason I was able to identify that is because that's how every dog interacts with my dog. She is too intense for most and is pretty terrible at listening to body language. This is one of the most helpful and easy to follow and understand body language videos I've found in my research over the last year. I would absolutely love more of a breakdown possibly a series of some sort where you go into understanding the communication signals per portion of the dog for example the head or just the eyes and ears. Thanks so much Susan

I think this is very helpful. I'm trying to help my dog right now. She is a service dog and has steadily been getting more and more dog anxiety since she was bum-rushed and attacked by a huge lab that came shooting out of their house a couple of years ago. We have had a recurring issue of people's unrestrained, untrained, and improperly socialized dogs running at her to investigate, play, or show dominance. Here in Iowa, it seems like virtually nobody trains their dog or has fences. I think since moving here almost 3 years ago I've met like 2 dogs that were actually trained. 3 if you count my sister in law's puppy who is actually IN training. I have a behavior question: why do dogs keep belly-bumping my dog? She's very stressed with her back arched, no hackles, whale eyes, and looking away or trying to get away and it seems like 40% of the time, the invading dog starts nosing hard at her belly. Just this last weekend, an untrained and unrestrained mastiff ran up on us, she did exactly that, and the dog started forcefully belly bumping her, forcing her paws to move. We were trying to move away (but the owner had no control and the dog wasn't even wearing a collar). She tried to face bump the mastiff like "stop, get out of my bubble" and the dog full on attacked. I'm now recovering with a dog bite on my left thigh and a big claw gouge on my right calf. She's okay with some bruises. He had to tackle his dog to get her off. WHY do dogs keep nose-bumping her belly???? Is this a dominance behavior??? Btw, I'm binge-watching all of your behavior and anxiety videos. Lol. And trying to enroll her in a group agility class to get her exposure to dogs who have been trained and properly socialized.

Poor big dog. At least 5 "get me outta here" eye contact with humans then followed by what looked like losing hope in the protection of humans. I wanted to rescue the big dog after the second one. From the beginning, I saw squints, blinks, ear flickbacks, tongue flicks, no-threat bows, butt to face (don't want to play signal - when my dog uses it), whale eye, yawn, mouth wide open, turn aways, freezes, shakes, combo close mouth-swallow-lip lick 1:52. I don't think my dog would have been so tolerant even with a puppy, she would have escalated to yelling at the puppy after about her second or third leave-me-alone signal. Those puppies have very sharp teeth and are very persistent, up to the humans to set the limits and teach fair play if they want to keep everyone safe.

Good idea about linking to this video in those videos! Here's something I've never been sure about: If I'm with my dog and she's seeming stressed about something in the environment and I can't remove her from it immediately for whatever reason, if I reflect her calming signals, will that reassure her because I'm reflecting her? Or will it make her a lot more anxious because she'll be thinking "wow, you're nervous too? I've really got something to be worried about here!" ?? Would love to know!! Great video Susan and hey- just ordered the Doggie Language book on eBay for jusr $6 with free shipping! Great Podcast Susan!!! Recallers and H360 student here-I would love a part 2 and 3. My puppy (also an Aussie)acts like that Aussie puppy with some dogs. I remember the breeder telling me his mom did not give the puppies corrections when they were too rough. I mistakenly let my puppy have too much freedom with other dogs early on and now I need to backtrack. Well he is a year old now and plays nicely with some but not all dogs. I always supervise. I’m getting better at identifying a lot of the discomfort behaviors and try to separate the dogs as soon as I see it… but I recognize I need more education. I now want my puppy on leash around other dogs because we are working on recall with doggy distractions (=level 10) but I don’t want to build in potential leash frustration. Could you discuss solutions you recommended for the dogs/family in this video? How do you teach a puppy to pick up on cues from the other dog? If you need to separate them, how long would be appropriate or rather what am I looking for at the moment you know the puppy is less aroused/ready to play again. Do they need to be showing all the signs of being relaxed? Thank you for all that you do!!!❤️❤️❤️

Hi Susan, my dog, a boxer, is unreliable with dogs, sometimes he will walk past with no drama, other times he will lunge towards them without much warning. On occasion, when walking towards a dog, he will start to crouch into a stalking crawl, sometimes he will go down into a pounce position and await the dog coming into range. If possible when he stalks or downs I will about turn but it is not always possible. He has in the past, when off lead ran to another dog and been a bully. No teeth used but definitely not a nice interaction. As a result he gets very little time off lead. Any advice?

Hi Susan! Do you have a podcast on how to rehab a dog from your own poor training/habits? I've never believed in the "showing the dog who's boss" mentality, but I did believe in scaring them into going against their nature. So, if a dog has a high prey drive or a breed-specific undesired trait, I was taught to "make them more afraid of the consequence than their nature." I've made progress, and no idea this dog loves me. He's never become shutdown or overly fearful. It's very excited greetings, bringing me his toys, prolonged eye contact, naps on my lap, full-bodied tail wags, follows me to the bathroom, etc. However, some triggers will cause him to run to his crate: an accident indoors, if I sigh from a frustrating Zoom/phone call, if I shut the windows, etc. I get that he may never forget it, but I'd love him to be his crazy, confident self all the time. Like Maya Angelou said: "When you know better, do better."

Until I got my mini schnauzer I did not know yawning could be a sign of stress - I told my vet she seemed unusually tired and she did not want go for walks. He asked me some questions - turned out she did not like to be picked up and would yawn when I did - as far as walking we discovered she hated wearing a harness - when I stopped using it she became very excited when it was time to go for a walk. She was super easy to train with a collar and no pulling

I have been working with a trainer who is my mentor. She is a master of body language. There is SO much to learn here and it is SO valuable to both owner and trainer. I find body language fascinating and have read much but need more LAB work (no pun intended) I understand the big stuff like the shake-off, tongue flick and look aways. The challenge is catching is because so much is so FAST. PLEAS do some followups! THX

Our rescue dog (she was a stray from the pound) is rough in the yard and I got angry at her, which I completely regret. But now if I have her in the yard off leash, she looks at me from across the yard in this stiff, hunched down, staring posture, sometimes slowly walking toward me. It kind of frightens me. I don’t know if she’s being aggressive or if she’s showing fright. Anyway I take her out on a leash now and I’m trying to work with her. I feel like I’ve ruined everything. I don’t know how to remedy it.

It could mean a number of things, as I mentioned in the video all of what the dog is doing at that moment needs to be considered. So a young dog meeting an older dog might flip their the butt to allow the older dog to sniff or like 'body curving' as a calming signal or in Tater Salad's case in hopes that you will scratch his butt (his most favourite body part to have scratched). But it could also be a way of deflecting the energy of another dog or individual...but need to consider it within the entire body of the dog.

My dog is almost 1 year old and has Small Dog Syndrome. He barks at other dogs. When he was younger and isolating after vaccination, a bigger dog was very unfriendly and rude to him. First impressions last and so he became wary of bigger dogs. He recently finally found a poodle that would play with him. This video gives me more insight on whether they are playing nicely or is he stressing the other dog out.😂

Very interesting information. My 2 yr old Irish Terrier shows these signs every time we walk off our property. I don't know why she is scared and anxious, but vehicles and other dogs scare her. I see every sign you talk about. So now, how do I get her to be able to walk? She is a good, sweet dog and does ok in the car, at the vet, im stores, in parking lots, and on most hiking trails. Walking on the street and in many neighborhoods is nearly impossible. I play first, do figure eights, take treats, and those things help, but then a car passes or a dog is behind a fence and she loses her mind and is super afraid. We have tried 2 trainers and their solutions were to use a prong collar and force her to walk with corrections. That wasn't working for us and I feel they made the problem worse.

What steps were taken, once the Aussie Shepherd adult in the video was removed from the pen to help these owners deal with the puppy who was making the adult dog feel like it needed to escape? This is exactly what my 6mo puppy is doing to my 15m old rescue dog. He is being forced to escape the garden fences to get away from her, if left alone together in the yard, she is now twice the height of him (different breeds) and doesn’t relent. I think separating for his protection is key but how do you teach a puppy not to be unrelentingly “playful” to the point of harassing or bullying when the adult dog is giving signs of saying no, by snapping and forced to flee, and just not wishing to play? How do I teach the pup good puppy behaviour and the rescue dog good adult behaviour in their interactions, now they no longer either have their siblings or parents to teach them from their former home environments?

few things my dog does that im slightly worried about. "worried" because i want him to be happy and confident and at all times and i want to relay back to him that i love him and im someone that can be trusted and loved. Im constantly watching his body language and most of it i have figured out but there's a few ares im not sure about.. When he is laying down chillin or in a getting ready for sleep mode, he will be on his side chillin, sprawled out, tail out from his body, i will talk to him in my "good boy" voice and pet him and he will usually stretch and go squinty eyed and do this weird thing with his mouth. Not lip licking but open his mouth slightly and make a soft tongue smacking noise. idk how to describe it. Like when we humans are tasting something and we press our tongues to the roof of our mouths and/or back of our top front teeth and repeatedly make that "tasting" noise. My dog will do that. His body language appears relaxed and calm and he appears to enjoy when i pet him and massage him. But the stretching and that mouth noise makes me wonder if hes trying to show submission or something as if he thinks thats what im looking for, aka hes afraid of me? which shouldnt be the case but im super paranoid about him constantly and on the off chance hes not perfectly happy and comfortable i want to know about it asap and adjust my own behavior to relay messages of calmness and love to him. When i get home from work he will run up to me and and be wagging his tail 100 miles an hour and be obviously happy to see me. he wants to play constantly. hes constantly bringing me toys and ropes to play tug of war with. And when i go to sleep ill have to tell him to get out of my s pot on the bed and once im laying down ill let him come snuggle. he will almost always remain with me and snuggling throughout the night but hell occasionally move to the foot of the bed. But when he initially walks up to lay down next to me he will flop down onto me and onto the bed and he will press his face and nose under my face or head and end up with his nose by my ear. he'll be smooshed right up under me basically. wedged into the corner of where my body meets the bed. Thats how he ALWAYS lays down, and hell either stay like that all night or he will turn away from me and lay his head on my arm or sometimes under my arm in the same way he tries to burry his face under my neck or head. I assume this means he is happy and comfortable with me and he falls asleep super quick and then will twitch all night as he sleeps. Other weird behavior is he will eat absolutely everything. When we are outside going potty he will walk with his nose to the g round in search of something to pick up and chew and he'll swallow it before i even get a chance to stop him sometimes. He eats 4 times a day. hes nothungry. i have no idea why he does this. He will also run around with his tongue on the ground whenever its wet or snowy. he also has a big bowl of water with his food 4x a day and drinks randomly throughout teh day. he shouldnbt be thirsty.. If anyone with more experience in dog body language than me could enlighten me on what these things mean id appreciate it. May 9th 2022 is his bday. hes 7.5 months old. husky, boxer, AmStaf terrier.

He loves you. I don't see anything wrong with the tasting sound, my dog does that as well. I would get training on how to teach him to spit things out so that he doesn't eat something that he shouldn't while you're out. I don't think the tongue licking the wet ground is an issue either. I don't think that's a sign of thirst - just curiosity. He sounds like a happy dog and you are a very attentive owner. I'm not a professional but I think there is a lot of love between the two of you.

I just brought home a new puppy Thursday night and I have a 1y6m old pup also in the house. He’s completely obsessed with the puppy. Is there anyway I can share a few short videos and get feedback? I just need to know if they’re playing safe. They seem to be excited about each other. The older one gets a bit rough, and the baby gets annoyed, but I am working on that one. I just need someone knowledgeable to tell me if they’re safe together.

The first part of this note was too long. This😢 is about reading our dog's emotions. My dog was terminally ill and And she needed surgery. They removed a 7 lb (3.18 kg) mass. They sent it off to pathology, and the report came back as a type of hemangiosarcoma, and instead of 1-3 mo life expectancy, she could live as long as 5 months. Ultimately, she lived almost 4 months, and my eyes still leak every day. Anyhow, we spent almost 12 years together, and we had such a connection. A couple of trips to the vet preceded this

We are fostering a 1 year old Indian spitz spayed female. She was recently rescued from the streets. She is friendly and intelligent but continuously keeps play biting my 3 year old male Labrador. I couldn't time mark because it all hit home. I've seen a lot of this behavior between my 6-month-old Vizsla and 3-year-old Vizsla mix and with an older Great Dane friend. The Dane tends to push her down with a paw and turn away. We call her the fun police. I am very interested in the body language of teeth as I see that a lot also. My puppy will escalate and my 3-year-old shows her teeth and the puppy also does as well. I separate them if I see this and calm the puppy by stroking her ears and chest and talking quietly. No punishment. When she has calmed I let her return to play and it is usually at a lower level of arousal. I hope this is appropriate.

I'm not sure we can tell since the video is taken from an angle from the left. It looks like a pretty full wag to me, if unsure (due to the angel), what does the rest of the dog's body cues tell you? Additionally, this was a 5-second clip...in slow motion so likely a 2-second clip I'd encourage you not to draw too many conclusions without a longer and more full look at the dog.

First, it is not appropriate to let two dogs play in such a small space, especially for breeds that are usually agitated. It is very clear that it is stressful for the adult dog and a very general analysis shows this very well, without having to analyze all the signals. Nevertheless, the whole video is interesting except this interaction between the puppy and the adult dog: bad decision.
